Removable Cover Or Protector For Body Inserted Conduit Patents (Class 604/263)
  • Patent number: 8043268
Abstract: A safety hypodermic needle and a method of using the same are disclosed. The safety needle comprises a hypodermic needle and a protective sheath molded of a flexible polymeric material. The protective sheath comprises a needle sleeve with an open central passage which houses the sharp needle point. The needle sleeve is supported on a plurality of inwardly bowed ribs in an unflexed “at rest” condition in which the needle point is retained inside the needle sleeve to prevent inadvertent needle sticks. Levers attached to the ribs are used to move the ribs from their inwardly bowed unflexed “at rest” condition to an outwardly bowed flexed condition to permit the needle to pass through the open central passage of the needle sleeve and into a patient's body. After the needle is removed from the patient's body, the ribs automatically return to the unflexed “at rest” condition without the assistance of any additional biasing or restoring means.

Abstract: A safety IV catheter includes a unitary, resilient needle guard received in a catheter hub. The needle guard includes a proximal arm or wall that includes an opening through which a needle passes for axial movement. When the needle is retracted from the catheter, it releases the force that had previously prevented movement of the needle guard within the catheter hub. This in turn causes the needle guard to snap into a position in which it is clamped onto the needle shaft and in which its distal wall blocks access to the needle tip. In this condition, the spring needle guard and needle can be removed from the catheter hub. A slot or crimp may be formed in the needle shaft that engages with the needle guard after the protected needle and needle guard are removed from the catheter hub, thereby to prevent removal of the protected needle from the needle guard.

Abstract: A safety needle for automatically covering a needle tip following removal of the needle from a patient includes a hub mounted to the needle. A slidable sleeve is slidably mounted to the hub and has an extended position in which a tip of the needle is located inside the slidable sleeve and a retracted position in which the tip of the needle projects from the slidable sleeve. An outer surface of the hub deflects the slidable sleeve in a radial direction as the slidable sleeve slides in an axial direction toward a receiving end of the hub. A spring member is mounted to the slidable sleeve proximate the mounting end. A displacement force urges the slidable sleeve toward the retracted position and generates a restoring force within the spring member. The restoring force urges the slidable sleeve to move toward the injection end of the needle hub and into the extended position upon removal of the displacement force.

  • Patent number: 7811261
Abstract: A single-use cover assembly that obscures a substantial majority or an entirety of an injection needle from view before, during, and after an injection procedure. The cover assembly includes a housing and a needle sleeve that retracts and extends by sliding axially within the housing. The needle sleeve carries a locking collar that moves from a first position to a second position once the needle sleeve is fully retracted. In the first position the locking collar allows retraction of the needle sleeve from a fully extended position. In the second position, a portion of the locking collar covers a tip of the needle, thereby preventing retraction of the needle sleeve from the fully extended position.

Abstract: A needle tip shielding mechanism is described herein. The shielding mechanism comprises an outer housing, an inner housing, and a needle having a needle feature. Generally, the outer housing comprises at least one adapter-interlock feature. Moreover, the inner housing comprises a needle-feature capture mechanism, such as a washer feature, and a needle-tip capture mechanism, such as duckbilled tip barrier. In some cases, the inner housing is slidably moveable within the outer housing. In such cases, the inner housing is movable between a first position that biases the adapter-interlock feature into an engaged position and a second position that allows the adapter-interlock feature to move to an unengaged position. This ability to bias the interlock feature in the engaged position and to allow the interlock feature to move to the unengaged position allows the shielding mechanism to be selectively coupled to and released from an interlock-feature mating component within a catheter adapter.

  • Patent number: 7785296
Abstract: A needle tip spring protector for a needle having a proximal end, a distal end, and a shaft extending therebetween. The needle tip spring protector includes a spring that circumferentially surrounds a portion of the needle shaft and is restrained in a state wherein its inner diameter is large enough to allow the shaft to move freely within the spring. When the needle is moved to a position in which its distal end is at least partly within the spring, at least one of the ends of the spring releases from restraint such that the spring automatically returns to a state in which its inner diameter is sized so as to grippingly engage the shaft of the needle. Thus, after activation, the spring securely surrounds the distal end of the needle to protect healthcare workers and others from accidental contact with the needle's distal end. When used in conjunction with a catheter assembly, the needle tip spring protector may passively release from the catheter hub after the spring is automatically activated.
