Patent number: 8480753Abstract: The present invention relates to systems and methods for preparing the trochlear groove of a patient's femur to receive a prosthesis thereon. In the system, a combination drill-and-alignment guide includes at least a proximal and intermediate section, and preferably also includes a distal section. Guide holes for receiving guide pins therein are located in the proximal and distal sections of the guide. After the guide is positioned using at least one of several visual and/or tactile references in the system, the guides pins are placed through the guide holes of the guide and into bone. The guide may then be removed and replaced by cannulated reamers that are rotated and used to resect a predetermined amount of bone around the guide pins. A prosthesis having at least a portion of an outer surface that substantially matches the trochlear groove of the patient in a pre-degenerated state is then implanted on the resected bone.Type: GrantFiled: February 27, 2009Date of Patent: July 9, 2013Assignee: Howmedica Osteonics Corp.Inventors: Carlos E. Publication number: 20130018382Abstract: A femoral component instrument includes a rotatable locking mechanism such as a post and is capable of interchangeable use between posterior stabilizing (“PS”) and cruciate retaining (“CR”) femoral component types via the locking mechanism. The instrument further includes a modular pad so that a pad specific to the prosthesis type may be chosen. Publication number: 20120165949Abstract: An orthopedic implant and method for forming same includes providing a forging die having a punch and a split die. The split die is movable between an opened state, where first and second die portions are spaced apart to allow for removal of a formed orthopedic implant element from within the cavity portions, and a closed state, where the first and second die portions are secured together and the cavity portions cooperate to define a cavity to form the orthopedic implant element therein. The split die is closed and a billet of biocompatible material is provided in the cavity and the punch is moved to deform the billet in the cavity to forge the orthopedic implant element in the cavity while the first and second die portions are substantially fixedly secured together when the split die is in said closed state.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 23, 2011Publication date: June 28, 2012Applicant: ORCHID ORTHOPEDICS SOLUTIONSInventor: Steven L. Publication number: 20120165953Abstract: A process for forming a ceramic layer comprising a compound of a metal on a deposition surface of a workpiece comprises providing a reactive gas, selecting the amounts of a vapor of the metal and ions of the metal relative to each other, generating the metal vapor, and projecting an ion beam of the metal ions. The metal vapor, the metal ions, and the reactive gas form the ceramic layer with a desired structure. The process may include the step of controlling a deposition surface temperature. In one embodiment, the metal vapor comprises zirconium vapor and the ion beam comprises zirconium ions. The relative amounts of the zirconium vapor and the zirconium ions are selected to form a zirconia ceramic layer on the deposition surface. The zirconia may have multiple crystal phases that are formed according to a predetermined ratio.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 6, 2012Publication date: June 28, 2012Applicant: Zimmer, Inc.Inventors: Jeffrey P. Publication number: 20120143204Abstract: A prosthetic inserter includes an inserter head having at least first and second bosses, at least one of the bosses movable from a first position to a second position, that couple the inserter to a femoral provisional component via a pair of corresponding apertures, such as drill holes, within the articulating surfaces of a selected one of a series of femoral provisional components. Each provisional component of the series is capable of having different aperture distances measured between a respective pair of apertures. The bosses of the inserter are biased into an engagement position in which the inserter can be secured to a femoral provisional component to eliminate the need for an external engagement force to be supplied to the inserter.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 7, 2010Publication date: June 7, 2012Applicant: ZIMMER, INC.Inventors: Jeff Blaylock, Jody L. Patent number: 8187283Abstract: A reusable orthopaedic instrument includes a reusable orthopedic trial having a first outer surface and a second outer surface that is opposite the first outer surface. The second outer surface includes a plurality of sidewalls extending outwardly therefrom to form a cavity. A drain hole is formed in the second outer surface at a location within the cavity. The drain hole extends through the reusable orthopaedic trial from the second outer surface to the first outer surface. Further, the second outer surface slopes downwardly from the plurality of sidewalls toward the drain hole.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 2008Date of Patent: May 29, 2012Assignee: DePuy Products, Inc.Inventor: Kyle Thomas
