Patent number: 9655725Abstract: The articulating joint prostheses of the invention demonstrate reduced wear and can include a cup (101) formed of UHMWPE. An insert (150) of a hard material, such as metal, ceramic or cross-linked UHMWPE is positioned within the cup at a location of the contact between the cup and head (102). The shape of either component of the kinematic pair may be modified so as to result in an annular surface contact between the two components, with the insert positioned at the annular surface contact. Fluid trapped between the two components within the inner contour of the annular contact area is pressurized under load due to elastic deformation of the components and exuded out through an inter-articular gap over the surface of contact of the insert. This aids lubrication and reduces wear.Type: GrantFiled: August 31, 2012Date of Patent: May 23, 2017Assignee: Scyon Orthopaedics AGInventors: Stephen J. Bresina, Slobodan Tepic

Publication number: 20040225369Abstract: An acetabular prosthesis and method for its use in an orthopedic surgery is disclosed. The acetabular prosthesis forms a metal bearing, which articulates with a femoral head. The acetabular prosthesis is also configured so as to accept a polymer constraining ring. Should a revision surgery be necessary, the acetabular prosthesis may accept a polymer bearing liner over the metal bearing. The polymer bearing liner then articulates with the femoral head.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 30, 2004Publication date: November 11, 2004Inventors: Ryan C. Lakin, Troy W. Hershberger, Michael S. Publication number: 20040059427Abstract: A ball and socket joint prosthesis for use in arthroplasty is provided. The prosthesis includes a body for implantation at least partially within the medullary canal of a long bone. The long bone defines trabeculae in the proximal cancellous bone and lamellae in the cortical bone. The body includes a proximal portion thereof and a distal portion. The proximal portion has a medial periphery and includes surface features on a substantial portion of its proximal portion. The surface features are positioned to optimally transfer load from the prosthesis to the long bone.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 24, 2003Publication date: March 25, 2004Inventors: Jon C. Patent number: 6589284Abstract: Conventional modular sockets for ball joint prostheses usually consist of a metal socket housing and a skid-type shell inserted in the housing. Ceramic skid-type shells are usually press-fitted in the socket housing. The socket housing may become stiff, thereby causing a migration of the generic sockets. If the skid-type shell is inserted improperly, material may chip off at the edge of the skid-type shell. Due to the various designs of sockets, skid-type shells with different outer diameter have to be made available for every gliding surface diameter. The invention provides for a ceramic skid-type shell (2) that is rigidly inserted into a biocompatible metal ring (5). Said ring (5) is provided with at least three radially outwards extending fixing elements (6). Said fixing elements (6) engage with respective recesses (8) in the socket housing (7). The ring (5) is spaced apart from the socket housing (7) by a gap (14).Type: GrantFiled: February 28, 2002Date of Patent: July 8, 2003Assignee: CeramTec AGInventor: Paul Silberer
