Patent number: 7942880Abstract: In the repair of bone voids and deficiencies, rather than forming a planar, angled surface that could result in a “slip plane,” an implant features a defined geometric pattern such as a stair-step, which mates with a corresponding stair-step pattern formed on the bone. Screws or alternative fasteners extend through one or more of the stair-step patterns, and into the bone, such that local interface around each fastener is substantially transverse to the axis of the fastener, thereby achieving a set of effective, compression bond. As such, shear stresses that might be associated with an angled, planar fixation are converted to compressive forces, leading to a longer life and a reduced need for revision. Although in the preferred embodiment the plurality of surfaces defines a stair-step having right angles, other geometric patterns are applicable, so long as an irregular defect may be made more regular, and/or compressive forces are used to prevent shear stress.Type: GrantFiled: February 18, 2005Date of Patent: May 17, 2011Inventor: Morton Bertram, III

Patent number: 6758864Abstract: The present invention is intended to provide a cementless prosthetic bearing element which has been molded and which is possible to place in an acetabular socket without cement, the outer surface of the backing being provided with elements to assist stabilization and the ingrowth of bone. Thus, the bearing element is cheaper and easier to produce and provides superior location and installation in the bone. According to the present invention a cementless prosthetic bearing element comprises a backing which supports a bearing liner having a bearing surface, the backing being molded from a rigid polymeric material and said bearing liner being made from elastomeric polyurethane material to which the backing is molded with an outer surface which includes a number of raised engagement features provided in directions extending away from and/or towards the outer periphery of the outer surface.Type: GrantFiled: November 5, 2001Date of Patent: July 6, 2004Assignee: Benoist Girard SASInventors: John Andrew Storer, Richard Eddy Field, Neil Rushton

Patent number: 6458161Abstract: An acetabular prosthesis for implantation in an acetabulum and surrounding pelvis is described. The acetabular prosthesis includes an acetabular cup having a substantially concave inner surface and a substantially convex outer surface, wherein an area defining a groove is located on the outer surface of the acetabular cup. An optional spacer member, having a raised ridge formed on a surface thereof, slidably engages the groove. The spacer provides augmentation and load bearing support in cases where bone tissue loss has occurred in and around the acetabulum. A fastener, such as a surgical screw, is used to secure the acetabular cup, and the optional spacer, to the acetabulum. At least one attachment member is integrally formed with the acetabular cup for fastening to a surface of the pelvis, such as the ilium and/or the ischium. Another optional spacer member is provided for the attachment member to provide augmentation around the attachment points on the pelvis.Type: GrantFiled: February 23, 2001Date of Patent: October 1, 2002Assignee: Biomet, Inc.Inventors: Phillip M. Gibbs, Allen D. Boyd, Jr.

Patent number: 6416553Abstract: An acetabular prosthesis for implantation in an acetabulum includes an acetabular cup and a modular attachment component. The acetabular cup includes an outer surface operable to be received in the acetabulum and an inner surface operable to receive a bearing liner. The modular attachment component includes an attachment member and an engagement member. The attachment member is operable for use in attaching the modular attachment component to the acetabular cup and the engagement member is operable to engage a region of the acetabulum. The attachment member may nest within an anti-rotation counterbore or be slidably received within a channel of an attachment plate extending from the acetabular cup. The engagement member may be an elongated intramedullary blade, a flange or a hook.Type: GrantFiled: March 29, 2000Date of Patent: July 9, 2002Assignee: Biomet, Inc.Inventors: John R. White, Troy W. Patent number: 6306173Abstract: Modular acetabular reconstruction apparatus includes a generally cup-shaped portion adapted for fixation within a human pelvis and one or malleable extension arms adjustable in multiple dimensions. Each arm preferably includes one or more apertured sections spaced apart from one another by a necked-down section enabling each arm to be manipulated in three dimensions for intimate physical conformity with surrounding bone. The back surface of the generally cup-shaped portion may be adapted for a cemented or a non-cemented interface within a human pelvis; as such, the back surface may be adapted for porous bone in-growth. According to a disclosed method, the step of bending each arm in multiple dimensions may be carried out a part of a trial joint reduction. Various bending tools and techniques are also set forth.Type: GrantFiled: November 3, 1999Date of Patent: October 23, 2001Assignee: MedIdea, LLCInventor: Michael A. Masini

Patent number: 6231612Abstract: The cotyloidal implant has a hemispherical cup (5) forming an internal cavity (10), and an insert (7) engageable into the cavity, the cup being set in place by impaction and having to this effect anchoring asperities (15) provided on its external face, having the form of lozenges and which are contiguous and imbricated. The cup (5) is provided, on its external face, with two coaxial grooves configured like helical threads (38) having reverse pitches which intersect each other on a large portion of said external face, which are inclined in the direction of the cup opening and which have a depth increasing progressively in the opening direction of the cup (5); due to their intersection, the grooves delimit an important number of asperities (15). The invention provides for the making of a cotyloidal implant which can be anchored to the pelvis without the use of cement and screws.Type: GrantFiled: May 4, 1998Date of Patent: May 15, 2001Inventors: Bruno Balay, Jean Claude Cartillier, Claude Charlet, Alain Machenaud, Jean Marc Semay, Louis Setiey, Jean Pierre Vidalain
