    Abstract: A hip replacement apparatus that normally includes a supporting rod bent into an acute angle at its center with a rounded head on one end. The backplate can have an anchoring protrusion that mates into the trimmed-out bone at the joint.     Abstract: A method and apparatus for performing a minimally invasive total hip arthroplasty. An approximately 3.75-5 centimeter (1.5-2 inch) anterior incision is made in line with the femoral neck. The femoral neck is severed from the femoral shaft and removed through the anterior incision. The acetabulum is prepared for receiving an acetabular cup through the anterior incision and the acetabular cup is placed into the acetabulum through the anterior incision. A posterior incision of approximately 2-3 centimeters (0.8-1.2 inches) is generally aligned with the axis of the femoral shaft and provides access to the femoral shaft. Preparation of the femoral shaft including the reaming and rasping thereof is performed through the posterior incision, and the femoral stem is inserted through the posterior incision for implantation in the femur.

    Abstract: A joint prosthesis assembly includes a stem for disposition in a canal of a first bone constituting a first portion of the joint, a neck fixed to the stem, a collar fixed on the neck and having a peripheral groove, and an articulating head fixed on the neck. The assembly further includes a cup for disposition in a second bone constituting a second portion of the joint, an insert disposed in the cup to provide an interior lining for the cup, the insert being configured to receive the articulating head for movement therein, and the insert having a peripheral groove therein. A sleeve-shaped membrane is provided with a first O-ring fixed thereto at a first end thereof for disposition in the insert groove, and a second O-ring fixed thereto at a second end thereof for disposition in the collar groove. The membrane is thereby disposed to capture particulate debris generated by the articulating head in the insert. There is further contemplated a method for installing the assembly.

    Abstract: There is disclosed a hip prosthesis to replace a damaged hip-joint. The hip prosthesis comprises an acetabulum part having a cotyloid member to be tightly engaged into the acetabulum, an elongated neck part, and a femur part. The elongated neck part has an articulation head at one end thereon, the head being shaped to be articulately received in the acetabulum part, and a slidable connection at the other end thereof for engagement with the femur part. The femur part has a femur canal insertable portion formed with an arrangement to secure same in the femur canal by being embedded in regenerated bone marrow, and an engaging channel to receive the slidable connection of the elongated neck part and to securely connect the elongated neck part to the femur part.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a prosthetic device for placement in an implant area of the body. The prosthetic device comprises an elongated stem portion, a neck portion, and a head portion. Each of the stem, neck, and head portions comprise a material impregnated with an antibiotic agent such that, when the prosthetic device is inserted into the implant area in place of a weight-bearing prosthesis, the antibiotic agent can leach out of the material to fight infection in the implant area. As an added benefit, the structure of the prosthetic device maintains adequate joint spacing in opposition to contraction of the muscles and tendons of the patient over a period of time so that a weight-bearing prosthesis can again be implanted into the implant area after the infection has been overcome.
