Wear Or Deterioration Evaluation Patents (Class 702/34)
  • Patent number: 8868355
Abstract: An apparatus and method is provided for monitoring a condition of a structure using a passive wireless antenna sensor having a known resonant frequency when mounted on the structure. A series of radio frequency signals are transmitted with sweeping frequencies around the known resonant frequency to the passive wireless antenna sensor. The passive wireless antenna sensor includes a dielectric substrate disposed between an antenna pattern and a ground plane such that a change in the condition of the structure will cause a change in one or more characteristics of the passive wireless sensor. A signal is received from the passive wireless antenna sensor and a resonant frequency of the passive wireless antenna sensor is determined based on the received signal. The determined resonant frequency is then compared to the known resonant frequency, whereby a change in the resonant frequency indicates a change in the condition of the structure.

Abstract: A method for determining the health of a transformer through vibration measurement is disclosed. A vibratory signal, in the form of a physical mechanical vibration or auditory signal, is received at a sensor. The vibratory signal is converted into a frequency representation of the signal to derive its harmonics. Based on the power level for the harmonics in the vibratory signal, the harmonic current ratios in the transformer are calculated. The harmonic current ratios are summed together to quantify the health of the transformer. This value is called a K-factor, and is a quantification of the health of the transformer.

Abstract: An embodiment is a method and apparatus for a technique to report remaining life information of a non-volatile memory array. Information on expected life of a non-volatile memory array is received from a solid-state drive (SSD) processor. The information is converted into remaining life information according to a pre-defined format. The remaining life information is transmitted to an indicator or a communication device.

  • Patent number: 8756021
Abstract: A method of controlling operation of an indirectly-heated cathode (IHC) ion source includes a step of measuring a rate of loss of cathode weight of the IHC ion source that occurs during operation using a first cathode configuration and under a first set of operation conditions. A maximum weight loss for the first cathode configuration is determined, and a cathode lifetime is calculated based upon the rate of cathode weight loss and the maximum weight loss. A further method includes receiving a minimum source bias power value for operation of a cathode in a first configuration, measuring a rate of decrease in source bias power for a cathode in the first configuration, and calculating a lifetime of the cathode based upon the minimum source bias power and rate of decrease in source bias power.

  • Patent number: 8751170
Abstract: A method for determining the fatigue of the pump rotor of a gas turbopump comprises the following method steps: continuous determination of the rotational speed (n) of the pump rotor, determination of the local rotational speed maxima and minima of a temporal rotational speed profile under consideration, association of the rotational speed maxima and minima with each other to form pairs, determination of a pair fatigue value (L) for each of the rotational speed pairs, and accumulation of all pair fatigue values (L) to form a total fatigue value (Ltot). In this manner it is possible to determine the cyclic stress for the pump rotor of a vacuum pump and to include it in the calculation of a total fatigue value.

Abstract: A system and method of monitoring regeneration of a particulate matter filter for a stationary diesel engine is disclosed. The system monitors exhaust temperature and operating time of an engine to calculate accumulated operating time below a critical temperature. Upon reaching a maximum allowed accumulated operation time, the system initiates a warning signal to inform the operator to increase exhaust temperatures for passive regeneration of the filter. During regeneration, the system periodically measures filter pressure differential and the exhaust temperature to calculate a difference in pressure differentials measured at two different times and determine whether the difference is below a critical value to inform the operator that regeneration is complete.

  • Patent number: 8744780
Abstract: A clogged filter detector has a transmitter and a sensor which are held in place by a transmitter bracket and a sensor bracket, respectively. The transmitter emits a beam of electromagnetic radiation, and the sensor is positioned in the path of this beam at a point such that the beam travels through a filter between the transmitter and the sensor. The transmitter and sensor are misaligned with the air flow at the point where the beam contacts the filter. The transmitter alternates between a transmitting mode and a dormant mode, and the transmitter emits a plurality of electromagnetic pulses during each transmitting mode.

  • Patent number: 8736091
Abstract: The present techniques include methods and systems for operating converter to maintain a lifespan of the converter. In some embodiments, the operating frequency of the converter may be increased such that stress may be reduced on the bond wires of the converter. More specifically, embodiments involve calculating the aging parameters for certain operating conditions of the converter operating in a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) mode and determining whether the MPPT operation results in aging the converter to a point which reduces the converter lifespan below a desired lifespan. If the MPPT operation reduces the converter lifespan below the desired lifespan, the frequency of the converter may be increased such that the converter may be controlled to operate at a percentage of MPPT. Thus, in some embodiments, power output may be optimized with respect to maintaining a desired lifespan of the converter.
