Abstract: A customized, specialty-oriented database and index. of a subject matter area and methods for constructing and using such a database are provided. Selection and indexing of articles is done by experts in the topic with which the database is concerned. As a result, articles are indexed in a manner that allows facile, rapid retrieval of highly relevant articles with few or no false positives with much reduced database maintenance cost through frugal limitation of number of documents in the database, number of terms in a Master Index, and number of codes assigned to each document. A thesaurus allows indexing and search in accordance with terminology familiar to different anticipated groups of users (e.g. doctors, patients, nurses, technicians, and the like). Key articles collections and rapid access to documents therein are also provided. Additional classifications may be applied to articles or documents and searched as an additional search criterion such as a potential use.

Abstract: Methods and systems for indexing patent related prior art citations are disclosed. Electronic documents can be obtained from one or more patent information systems. An OCR process can be performed on some of the electronic documents. Citations within the documents can be identified and compared to a trusted records list. The citations can be associated with one or more predetermined categories. For example, citations can be categorized into groups such as when a reference is cited (e.g., with original filing, pre and post allowance), who provided the reference (e.g., cited by the applicant, or the examiner), and how the reference is characterized (e.g., statutory basis, combination of references). The citations and corresponding categories can be output to a user or made available for subsequent processing.

Abstract: A method, system and computer program product are described for state maintenance of a large object. In one approach, the method, system and computer program product perform by associating one or more buffers with a transaction involving a large object, the large object data may be accessed using the one or more buffers during the transaction, and storing data for the large object from the one or more buffers in one or more sets of contiguous blocks. In one approach, a system performs state maintenance of a large object with a cache that associates one or more buffers with a transaction involving a large object, the large object data may be accessed using the one or more buffers during the transaction, and the cache stores large object data from the one or more buffers in one or more sets of contiguous blocks in storage.

Abstract: According to some embodiments, systems, apparatus, methods and computer program code are provided for receiving data from a plurality of remote data sources, the received data being associated with a plurality of search terms, analyzing the received data to identify at least a first trending search term, comparing the trending search term with a database of topical terms to determine whether the trending search term is relevant to a predetermined topic, querying a content database using the trending search term to identify a caption to be associated with the trending search term, and storing the trending search term and the caption in a database.

Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method for assigning a cache structure to a catalog. The apparatus includes an identification module configured to identify a catalog for sharing in association with a coupling facility. The coupling facility includes a plurality of cache structures for catalogs of a cluster computing system. The coupling facility is configured to facilitate data sharing among a plurality of host systems of the cluster computing system. The apparatus includes a selection module configured to select a cache structure of the plurality of cache structures for the catalog based on one or more usage status indicators according to an assignment policy. The apparatus includes a storage module configured to store catalog information of the catalog in the cache structure in response to the selection module selecting the cache structure.

Abstract: A processor-implemented method, system, and/or computer program product defines multiple context-based data gravity wells on a context-based data gravity wells membrane. Non-contextual data objects are associated with context objects to define synthetic context-based objects. The synthetic context-based objects are parsed into an n-tuple that includes a pointer to one of the non-contextual data objects, a probability that a non-contextual data object has been associated with a correct context object, and a weighting factor of importance of the synthetic context-based object. A virtual mass of each parsed synthetic context-based object is calculated, in order to define a shape of multiple context-based data gravity wells that are created when synthetic context-based objects are pulled into each of the context-based data gravity well frameworks on a context-based data gravity wells membrane.

Abstract: Data regarding user actions on a user device is gathered from the user device (and/or from another computing device) by a server. The data is analyzed to make a decision. The decision is sent by the server to the user device (e.g., directly or via another computing device) and then used by the user device to implement a new action on the user device. This process may be automatically repeated in order to provide real-time customization of the user device.

Abstract: A media item selection application is provided for use with computing devices. The media item selection application is configured to identify media items that have significant similarities in metadata values, such as location and time period. The media item selection application is further configured to visualize similar media items as a group, depicted as a section within a collection or gallery, in which each group is a suggestion for a natural collection of media items representing an event. Where media items do not fall within a group of a particular size with significant similarities, groups are consolidated to create a second type of collection which covers a time-period between two significant groups. Further, the media item selection application is configured to depict media items that show extraordinary similarity as a virtual stack of all such media items.

Abstract: User input is entered or selected, and in response, the user input can be analyzed to determine a characteristic of the user input. The characteristic can describe the format, type, or content of the user input. The user input can be further analyzed to determine a category with which the user input is related. In response to the determined category, a set of predetermined or dynamically determined relevant applications can be determined. The set of the relevant applications can be based on user preferences, crowd-sourcing, and advertisements. The set of applications can then be executed in parallel, using the user input as input, such that results from the application are obtained quickly without user additional user input. The relevance of the results of the applications can be determined, and versions of the results can be displayed to a user in a ranked order according to the relevance of the results.

Abstract: In a method for processing an electronic document, a local database is used to extract information relating to the document, and a super ordinate database is used to extract information relating to the document if a predefined condition is met. Abstract: In a file distribution method using a control server in connection to file servers, file categories are preset and the file servers are classified into the file categories. When a file is received, a file category of the received file is determined, and the received file is distributed to a target file server according to the determined file category. The method determines a load value of each of the file servers according to a number of files to be processed in each of the file servers. A specified file server whose load value is equal to a threshold value is determined, and an overload file server having a greatest load value is determined. The method distributes files to be processed in the overload file server to the specified file servers according to a predetermined percentage.

Abstract: Embodiments relate to systems and methods employing personalized query expansion to suggest measures and dimensions allowing iterative building of consistent queries over a data warehouse. Embodiments may leverage one or more of: semantics defined in multi-dimensional domain models, user profiles defining preferences, and collaborative usage statistics derived from existing repositories of Business Intelligence (BI) documents (e.g. dashboards, reports). Embodiments may utilize a collaborative co-occurrence value derived from profiles of users or social network information of a user.

Abstract: A method and system for a single integrated computerized scrapbook system operable on a computing device connected to the Internet for providing a single integrated online scrapbooking solution, the system provides a method for storing and manipulating digital images on a computer. The application provides a user with tools for collecting, processing and cataloging digital and supply inventory. The user is able to combine the digital images, digital inventory and supply inventory in a manner for creating new digital projects. Finally, the user may print, publish or share the new digital projects, digital inventory and supply inventory via an online community.

Abstract: A computer-implemented system and method for processing and distribution of unstructured documents are disclosed. The apparatus and method in an example embodiment includes receiving an unstructured document; obtaining information from the document; storing portions of the information obtained from the document in a data set corresponding to the document; using a portion of the information obtained from the document to obtain an identifier of an enterprise record corresponding to the document; recording a specified behavior category for the document; and using the data set and the specified behavior category to dispatch the document to a recipient or an enterprise.

Abstract: Disclosed is a method and system for enabling storytelling on a computing device. A processor: (a) analyzes a first set of media items associated with the user, each media item having associated metadata; (b) identifies one or more related characteristics among the media items in the first set; (c) forms a cluster of media items associated with an event based on the identified one or more related characteristics; (d) repeats steps (a) and (b) for a second set of media items, each media item in the second set having associated metadata and related to a social connection of the user; (e) adds media items in the second set, from a social media site associated with the second set, to the cluster; (f) edits selected media items in the cluster to fit into selected templates; and (g) creates a mixed-media module comprising the templates organized into a desired sequence.

The health data is correlated and displayed using visualization tools including timelines, tasks or graphical images. Health data input sources can include healthcare providers, users, lab reports, and typically any entity that develops health related data. The health data is categorized, analyzed and processed according to individualized or context-oriented algorithms. The health data can be correlated with various contexts via users, curators, automated systems and other organizing tools. A user can view health data in relation to progress, trends and contextual data that is derived from the correlations.

In more specific embodiments, the method includes receiving a request from the user to perform a protection task on objects of the first subset and initiating the protection task. The protection task includes one of applying a remediation policy to the objects of the first subset and registering the objects of the first subset.

Abstract: A massively parallel processing (MPP) database can be re-partitioned/re-balanced while remaining on-line through a staged migration procedure. Staged migration may include a first stage and a second stage. During the first stage, entries in an existing partition are reallocated to the new partition, and the catalog is updated to associate the re-allocated entries with both the existing partition and the new partition such that queries for the re-allocated entries are directed toward the existing partition and the new partition. During the second stage, the re-allocated entries are migrated from the existing partition to the new partition, and after the migration is complete, the catalog is re-updated to associate the migrated entries with the new partition such that new queries are directed toward the new partition.

Abstract: Embodiments of the invention relate to modeling communities associated with groups of data items. Tools are provided to iteratively assign data items to communities and to update topic and participant distribution in the assigned communities. As the distributions are updated, the characteristics of the communities are updated. Each activity area is defined from the perspective of a single user. Participants in a community are connected to a user, but not necessarily to each other. The combination of formations of communities and the statistical aspect of evaluating characteristics of the communities provides a multi-facetted organization of connections between data items and associated participants.

Abstract: A search request received at a computer of a search support system is processed by analyzing the received search request to identify request parameters and connecting to a system index of the search support system that is referenced in the request parameters. An external result provider (ERP) process is initiated that establishes communication between the search support system and a data source external to the search support system, for a virtual index referenced in the request parameters. Thus, the ERP process provides an interface between the search support system and external data sources, such as by third parties. The ERP process can operate in a streaming mode (providing real-time search results with minimal processing) and/or a reporting mode (providing results with a greater delay and processing extent) and can switch between modes. The search request results are received from the connected system indexes and the referenced virtual indexes.

The product query may be classified as fully understood in response to all of the search terms matching either the ambiguous term list or the attribute list for the product category. A product search may be performed on the product query. The product search may be informed by the product category when the product query has been classified as fully understood. Search results may be generated and returned according to the product search.

Abstract: A cloud storage system that includes at least one interface that connects the cloud storage system to a data network, at least one non-volatile mass memory, and at least one control unit connected to the interface and to the at least one mass memory and arranged to 1) receive requests from a user with regard to data objects from the interface according to a data transmission protocol, 2) store data objects transmitted according to a write request in the at least one mass memory and 3) retrieve data objects requested according to a read request from the at least one mass memory, wherein a predetermined storage period is assigned to each data object, stored in the at least one non-volatile mass memory by a write request, at the latest upon receiving the write request, and the stored data objects in a predetermined group cannot be changed by subsequent requests according to the protocol via the interface before expiration of the assigned storage period.

Abstract: An intelligent synchronization tool ensures access to desired content in a manner that automatically keeps the content current on the portable media device. A variation threshold or user-specified degree of content variation may be introduced among content downloaded to a user's mobile device to prevent the user from becoming bored. Furthermore, intelligent synchronization may automatically populate the portable media device with popular content to save a user time and/or use passive monitoring techniques to ascertain a user's preferences for subsequent population.

Abstract: A method for contextual voice query dilation in a Spoken Web search includes determining a context in which a voice query is created, generating a set of multiple voice query terms based on the context and information derived by a speech recognizer component pertaining to the voice query, and processing the set of query terms with at least one dilation operator to produce a dilated set of queries. A method for performing a search on a voice query is also provided, including generating a set of multiple query terms based on information derived by a speech recognizer component processing a voice query, processing the set with multiple dilation operators to produce multiple dilated sub-sets of query terms, selecting at least one query term from each dilated sub-set to compose a query set, and performing a search on the query set.

Abstract: A system and method of determining the level of diversity for a search query are described. Distances between leaf categories in a hierarchical category tree are determined using co-click counts between the leaf categories for a query. Coordinate representations of the leaf categories are determined using the distances between the leaf categories. A diversity score for the query is determined using the coordinate representations. The diversity score represents a degree of variability in what different users find relevant to the query. In some embodiments, determining distances between leaf categories comprises determining the distances using a normalization of the co-click counts that uses co-impression counts between the leaf categories for the query. In some embodiments, a manifold learning algorithm is used to determine the coordinate representations. In some embodiments, multi-dimensional scaling is used to determine the coordinate representations.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for analysis of semi-structured social media are described. A method comprises classifying a plurality of user-generated content entries into a plurality of categories based at least in part on an analysis of respective structured components of at least a subset of the plurality of entries. The method further includes determining, based at least in part on an analysis of additional components of entries of a particular category, a set of representative content elements of entries of the particular category, and generating a report that comprises one or more representative content elements of the particular category.

Abstract: A computer implemented method includes accepting a corpus of documents organized in categories. Labels are selected for the categories based upon author frequency-inverse document frequency criteria that measures the total number of authors who utilize a given term within a category in comparison to the total number of authors who utilize the term both inside the category and outside the category. Clusters within each category are created based upon the labels. Each document in a cluster contains the term selected as a label for the cluster.

Abstract: Techniques for category-based content recommendation are described. Some embodiments provide a content recommendation system (“CRS”) configured to recommend content items (e.g., Web pages, images, videos) that are related to specified categories. In one embodiment, the CRS processes content items to determine entities referenced by the content items, and to determine categories related to the referenced entities. The determined entities and/or categories may be part of a taxonomy that is stored by the CRS. Then, in response to a received request that indicates a category, the CRS determines and provides indications of one or more content items that each have a corresponding category that matches the indicated category. In some embodiments, at least some of these techniques are employed to implement a category-based news service.

Abstract: A system for organizing and searching data, representing objects, in a database. The data is organized into subsets according to the objects' characteristics. A value is assigned to each subset member according to the degree it possesses the relevant characteristic. Each subset is organized into a linear progression according to the characteristic values of the subset member. Next, a beginning subset is selected. A portion of the selected subset is displayed as a linear progression, along which the searcher may scroll to view the subset members. Selecting an object from the linear progression will prompt the system to determine whether the object is a member of other subsets. If so, a portion of those subsets will be displayed as linear progressions intersecting the original linear progression at the selected object. The searcher may either continue scrolling along the original linear progression or begin scrolling along an intersecting linear progression.

Abstract: Embodiments disclosed herein provide a new way to catalog digital assets derived or otherwise created from an original source such as a video, clip, movie, film, or the like. In one embodiment, time-based metadata, along with technical metadata and business metadata can be captured within a video and collected locally at a client device running media catalog client software. The collected information can be communicated to a media catalog server at the back end. The media catalog server can create a new asset based on the collected information and store the asset in a database. Multiple assets may be created to describe and reference the same video. However, the video itself is not modified and no variation of the video is created in anyway.

Abstract: Unstructured data is received from a plurality of sources to facilitate risk analysis. The unstructured data comprises a plurality of bodies of text. Each body of text from the unstructured data is deconstructed into individual terms. The individual terms from each body of text are converted into a structured form. The individual terms in the structured form are categorized according to a comparison of the structured form to another structured form. The individual terms in the structured form are quantified according to at least the categorization of the individual terms.
