Abstract: A system and method is provided for capturing and using problem fingerprints in an Information Technology (IT) infrastructure for integrity management. A fingerprint of the transaction topology in an IT infrastructure is automatically captured at various time intervals prior to the occurrence of an event leading to a problem, such as a failure, hard threshold violation, defined transaction violation or user-provided occurrence. The fingerprint provides an indication of the activity and operation of the IT infrastructure immediately preceding the problem event. The captured fingerprint is then used to monitor real-time data in the IT infrastructure operation and activity to look for activity that matches a captured fingerprint to provide an indication of a pending problems before the problems occur.

  • Patent number: 8230262
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for determining the probability that one or more problems have occurred within a complex multi-host system. A probabilistic model representing the cause/effect relationships among potential system problems identifies the probability that a problem occurred in the system based at least on system measure states that are input into the probabilistic model. System measure states may be determined based on an aggregation of system measurement values taken periodically. Aggregating system measurement values may be performed over system measurement values that were taken during a recent time interval. A rolling count aggregation function may be used for this purpose. A rolling count function counts the number of system measurement values taken within the recent time interval that lie within a particular range of values. A system measure state may be determined based on whether the rolling count exceeds a threshold associated with the system measure.

Abstract: A method that determines the system impact of single event upset (SEU) and a single event upset (SEU) wrapper that controls a SEU controller is disclosed. The method injects faults into a component (e.g. FPGA, ASIC) of an operational system that is carrying live traffic and monitors the system's response to the faults to determine the impact of SEU on the system. The SEU wrapper sends the SEU controller a pattern scheme that includes information indicating when, where, how often, and/or how long to inject bursts of one or more faults into memory of the component of the system. A burst of faults contains faults that are consecutively injected into the array of memory blocks. After each fault in a burst is injected, one or more errors in one or more memory elements are detected and/or corrected. Information regarding the detection and/or the correction of an error is updated using registers that store counters. After injecting a burst of faults, the SEU controller waits for a predetermined amount of time.

  • Patent number: 8117300
Abstract: A production information reporting/recording system is disclosed herein including a number of features to ensure efficient, flexible and reliable recording of production data in a manufacturing system. Such features include validating the content of event messages to ensure compliance of event report information with a standard. The system also supports caching IDs associated with particular aspects of an event message (e.g., a production request, a process segment) as well as a unique ID corresponding to the ID assigned by the production event database to reduce the need to access the database when assigning unique database IDs to received events. The production event messaging system also supports both asynchronous and synchronous transactional messaging between the sources of events and the production database service.

  • Patent number: 8108740
Abstract: In the method for operating a memory device which has a number of memory blocks, the memory blocks are marked as intact, suspect, or defective. The memory blocks marked as suspect are monitored. If the number of memory blocks marked as intact in the memory device falls below a predetermined limit, at least one of the memory blocks marked as suspect is subsequently marked as intact and is used.

Abstract: Techniques are described herein that are capable of monitoring activity with respect to a distributed application. A server system includes logical tiers, each including processing system(s) configured to process messages in accordance with a respective protocol (e.g., an ASP.net® protocol, WCF protocol, SQL protocol, etc.). When a user initiates an activity with respect to a distributed application, hops are performed between the logical tiers and/or between components of the distributed application to complete the requested activity. A hop is a transfer of a message or a procedure call from one processing system to another processing system. A common identifier may be assigned to each of the hops that are performed with regard to the activity. If a failure occurs with respect to the activity, the common identifier may be used to gather information regarding the hops. For instance, the information may be used to determine a source of the failure.

Abstract: A diagnosis circuit 1 monitors a watchdog timer 2 and supplies a diagnosis result signal 1 indicating whether a monitoring result is normal or not to a diagnosis circuit 2. A diagnosis circuit 3 monitors a watchdog timer 1 and supplies a diagnosis result signal 3 indicating whether a monitoring result is normal or not to the diagnosis circuit 2. The diagnosis circuit 2 determines that the diagnosis circuit 1 or the watchdog timer 2 is abnormal when the diagnosis result signal 1 does not have a value indicating normal. Further, the diagnosis circuit 2 determines that the diagnosis circuit 3 or the watchdog timer 1 is abnormal when the diagnosis result signal 3 does not have a value indicating normal.

  • Patent number: 8090974
Abstract: A computer readable storage medium with executable instructions specifies the execution of a state machine operating across a set of computing nodes in a distributed computing system. The executable instructions execute a set of operators, where the execution of each operator is under the control of a state machine that periodically invokes pause control states to pause the execution of an operator in response to a violation of a service level agreement specifying an operating condition threshold within the distributed computing system. Partitions of input data are formed that are worked on independently within the distributed computing system. A set of data batches associated with the input data is processed. Data partition control states to process the partitions associated with the set of data batches are specified. Key control states to process a set of keys associated with a data partition of the partitions are defined.

  • Patent number: 8090994
Abstract: A system, a method, and a computer readable media for identifying a log file record in a log file are provided. The log file has a plurality of log file records therein. The plurality of log file records has a repeating pattern of log file records. The method includes displaying a first graphical user interface on a display device. The method further includes selecting the log file utilizing the first graphical user interface. The method further includes analyzing the log file to determine the repeating pattern of log file records. The method further includes selecting a first command button on the first graphical user interface that executes an algorithm to analyze additional log file records that were automatically added to the log file by a software program. The additional log file records are associated with the repeating pattern of log file records.

Abstract: A test system uses an instrumented browser to identify events that were not successfully captured during a client web session. The identified events can be used to modify a capture system that captures the client web session. Alternatively, the test system may generate replay rules that are used by a replay system to infer the missed events while replaying of the previously captured client web session. The events can include changes to Document Object Models (DOMs) for web pages used during the web sessions. The DOMs can be used to identify significant web session events and force replay sessions into the correct states.

  • Patent number: 8086909
Abstract: A support center receives an error message from a remote storage system indicating that an error, such as a kernel panic, has occurred on the remote storage system. The error message is processed to determine the type of error, whether the type of error is known and whether a solution is known for the type of error. If the type of error is unknown, a core file upload request is automatically generated and sent to the remote storage system.

  • Patent number: RE43154
Abstract: One embodiment of the present invention provides a system that systematically monitors and records performance parameters for a computer system. During operation, the system periodically measures values for a set of performance parameters associated with the computer system while the computer system continues operating. The system then records the values on a data storage device, wherein the recording process keeps track of temporal relationships between events in different performance parameters. The system subsequently allows the recorded values for the set of performance parameters to be analyzed.
