Data containers are associated with a pointer or association indicium of fixed size that indicates the relationship between the data container and a target item. They systems and methods include, among other things, determining that two or more data containers will overlap if displayed in the user interface and performing a shift of the data containers, a resizing of the data containers, a shifting of the pointer, or a combination of the above. An interface allows documents, email messages, contact information, web links or pages, and user-attached notes to be stored in the same folders. This facilitates communication by email and fax. In one embodiment of the invention, the client, in its email function, communicates with a dedicated host which in turn communicates with external servers according to standard internet protocol.

The content can be automatically annotated to generate varying sets of the content. The varying sets of content can include varying levels of annotation to better meet user preferences or device capabilities. One or more of the varying sets of content can be output to a content browser, allowing a user of the content browser to see an annotated version of the content.

Abstract: Automated methods are used to augment an original script of a time-based media program that contains speech with timing metadata and an indication of a confidence level with which script portions are matched with the speech in the program audio track. An editor uses a spot dialog editor tool to produce a word-accurate spot dialog master by reviewing and editing script portions displayed next to the corresponding portions of the time-based media. The spot dialog editor tool selects for review and editing the parts of the script having a low confidence match with the speech in the program.

Abstract: A system for annotating frames in a media stream frames includes a pattern recognition system (PRS) to generate PRS output metadata for a frame; an archive for storing ground truth metadata (GTM); a device to merge the GTM and PRS output metadata and thereby generate proposed annotation data (PAD); and a user interface for use by the HA. The user interface includes an editor and an input device used by the HA to approve GTM for the frame. An optimization system receives the approved GTM and metadata output by the PRS, and adjusts input parameters for the PRS to minimize a distance metric corresponding to a difference between the GTM and PRS output metadata.

After the step of associating, the method includes automatically selecting a first page layout from the library of page layouts, wherein the first page layout comprises an image receiving area and an image caption area in association with the image receiving area, automatically placing the first image in the image receiving area in the first page layout, and automatically placing the text information into the image caption area in association with the image receiving area in the first page layout to produce a page in the photo album.

Abstract: A method for electronically signing an electronic transcript. The method includes obtaining an image of a court reporter's signature which may be incorporated into an electronic transcript. A hash operation performed on the electronic transcript to generate a representation of the contents of the electronic transcript. The representation of the contents of the electronic transcript is recorded/time stamped by a digital notary service, from which a notary record of the time stamping is obtained from the digital notary service. The notary record is digitally signed, and an electronically signed electronic transcript is formed by bundling the digitally signed notary record with the electronic transcript and with the data identifying the user. In this manner, an electronic transcript with an electronic signature is created. The electronic transcript may be viewed, with the image displayed in the viewer having an image of the court reporter's signature.

A communication control unit receives a message sent from user A to user B. In accordance with an embodiment of the present invention, a method of annotating digital content is provided. An annotation related to a portion of a volume of digital content is created. The annotation is created by a first user. A comment is created by a second user in response to the annotation. The comment is stored in computer-readable memory in a manner that maintains a logical connection between the comment and the annotation. Abstract: The present invention generally provides methods, systems, and articles of manufacture for managing an annotation system that includes storing annotations for a document family, i.e., a series of versions of a data source. Annotations created for one version of the data source may be viewed in context from both subsequent and prior versions of the same data source. Embodiments of the invention associate annotations with both a data source “family identifier” as well as a “version identifier.” Other than adding a family ID to the data source, the data source remains unchanged. The family ID is maintained across different versions of the data source, whereas version IDs are determined for a specific version of the data source. Version IDs can be constructed from each data source directly, and do not need to be stored.

Abstract: One embodiment of the present invention provides a method for allowing a first user to view a collaboratively annotated electronic document. During operation, the system identifies a set of users based on the similarities of online behavior between the identified users and the first user. The system further ranks the identified users based on degrees of similarities between these users and the first user. The system then retrieves an electronic document selected for viewing by the first user and determines whether at least one of the identified users has annotated the electronic document.
