Abstract: A system, method, and computer program product are provided for synchronizing configuration values between a database and a remote input utility by configuring the database for remote input and loading the configuration values to a control file at the server, and copying the configuration values to a control file at remote system including the input utility, executing the input utility at a remote system using configuration values from the control file at the remote system to prepare data for input to the database, and responsive to the configuration values at the control file of the server, updating the configuration values in the control file at the remote system before migrating the new data from the input utility to the database.

Abstract: A system and method for enabling user preferences and device characteristics to be used to generate a customized interface for services and particularly, for enabling interaction between heterogeneous mobile devices and services in a local environment through one's device. The system automates the creation of custom mobile interfaces for service interaction, since the author of a service is typically unaware of the different types of devices that will utilize the service. The method includes communicating, when a service is invoked, the input capabilities of the device to a service broker along with preferences of the user. The characteristics and functionality of the service is included in the specification of the service. A mapping function maps the triad of user preferences, device description, and service functions to optimize the placement of the services' functions (interfaces) on to the device's input controls while taking the user preferences and device output controls into account.

Abstract: A method, system, and article of manufacture that help system administrators visualize the relationship between a global setting and the setting in each instance. One embodiment of the present invention comprises receiving a selection of a setting, determining an inheritance state for the selected setting, and displaying a graphical indication of the inheritance state of the selected setting. In some embodiments, the method further comprises displaying a graphical indication of the inheritance relationship between the selected setting and at least one related setting. The method may also include receiving a change inheritance relationship command, and changing the inheritance relationship for the selected setting.

Abstract: System and method for creating, configuring, representing, and using variables in programs. A graphical user interface (GUI) may be displayed in response to user input requesting creation and/or configuration of a variable for use in or comprised in one or more programs, e.g., on various devices. User input is received to the GUI configuring attributes of the variable, including: name, data type, and/or scope (e.g., local, global, or network). The configured attributes are stored and optionally displayed, e.g., in a resource tree, and the variable in each of the programs updated in accordance with the configured attributes. When at least one of the programs is incompatible with the configured variable, an error condition may be indicated, e.g., by providing information relating to portions of the program that are incompatible with the configured variable. The program may be modified in response to user input for compatibility with the configured variable.

Abstract: A system and method for flexibly visualizing and selecting configuration changes over time is disclosed herein. The system may include a coarse selection interface configured to select one of a coarse time range and a discrete point in time from an available overall set of discrete points in time, a fine selection interface configured to select one of a fine time range and the discrete point in time from the selected one of the coarse time range and the discrete point in time, and a visualization panel configured to display a graphical representation of configuration changes selected through the fine selection interface. The method may include selecting the coarse time range on the coarse selection interface, selecting the fine time range on a fine selection interface, and visualizing the graphical representation on the visualization panel.

A processing system is operatively connected to the first and the second memory and to a display. The processing system selectively maps the data on the graphical representation of the communication network by varying visual characteristics of the devices and the links for viewing on the display.

Abstract: A method of automatically provisioning a network-wide function using a plurality of network elements in a service provider network and using a sub-network level approach is provided. In one specific approach, a software wizard facilitates provisioning a bi-directional line switched ring (BLSR). First user input, specifying a plurality of ring attribute values that define attributes of a bi-directional line switched ring, is received. Second user input, specifying one or more working spans for the bi-directional line switched ring, is received. Each of the network elements is automatically configured to participate in the bi-directional line switched ring based on the parameter values. Embodiments may provide a software wizard for implementing the foregoing process.

Abstract: An information management system is disclosed and includes a bootstrap server and at least one additional component. Further, the system includes an animated installation manual file stored within the bootstrap server. The animated installation manual is configured to be presented to a user upon an initial boot of the bootstrap server. Additionally, the animated installation manual can be automatically generated based on configuration information received from the user.

Abstract: Information for configuring control apparatus for a power system including a plurality of controlled power supplies is produced using a graphical interface which displays the topology and sequencing of the power supplies in the power system. A database is used to select power supplies to add in determining the power system topology. Sequencing is represented by displacing icons representing the power supplies along lines representing their input and output voltages, and arrows representing startup sequence dependencies. A processor produces the configuration information, consistent with the displayed topology and sequencing, using information for the selected power supplies from the database, for downloading to the control apparatus.

Abstract: A computer implemented method, apparatus, and computer-usable program product for process configuration are provided in the illustrative embodiments. A process that is to be configured is identified. A list of tasks associated with the identified process is displayed. A set of the tasks displayed in the task list are selected. The selected tasks are configured according to one or more task parameters. If the process that is being configured is already running, the process is suspended before the selected tasks are configured. If the process is suspended, the process is resumed after the selected tasks have been configured. The process is identified, the list of task is displayed, and the one or more tasks are selected and configured using a graphical user interface.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to appropriately rendering terminal server graphical data at multiple client side monitors. In some embodiments, a client sends client side monitor configuration for a plurality of monitors to a server. The server simulates a virtual desktop for the plurality of monitors based on the client side monitor configuration. Graphical data generated for the simulated virtual desktop is converted to drawing commands and returned to the client for rendering. In other embodiments, a separate terminal server session is established for each of a plurality client side monitors. Drawing commands for a specified client side monitor is sent from the terminal server to the client over the corresponding session for the client side monitor.

Abstract: A method is provided for automatically generating code to define and control a system of connected hardware elements. The method comprises: accepting a system configuration macro with sub-macros for system elements, subsystem elements, and connections there between; accepting a plurality of tables with a plurality of system element behaviors, a plurality of subsystem element behaviors, and a plurality of connection options; defining the system of connected elements in response to selecting sub-macros; defining the physical links between the system elements and the behavior of the system and subsystem elements in response to populating the selected sub-macro parameters; expanding the selected sub-macros; generating executable code; and, accessing the tables in response to parameters in the executable code. Advantageously, the form and function of the system can be defined with programming, or writing application specific code.

Abstract: A processing device generates a relationship view of managed entities in a storage area network based on objects stored in a relational database. Each managed entity (e.g., file system, database, volume, storage device, etc.) in the storage area network has a corresponding managed object stored in the relational database. Generally, managed objects of a particular type are categorized into one or more tables. Such tables are related to one another by foreign key attributes, which represent relationships between types of managed objects (and thus a relationship between corresponding managed entities). Relationships among the managed objects in the relational database may be generally classified as either association or containment. Association identifies a logical relationship between managed objects. Containment identifies groups of managed objects that are logically associated with each other.

Abstract: A method for selecting skinnable interfaces and a system for implementing the same. The method discloses accessing user specific information upon installation of an application on a computing resource. The computing resource is associated with a user that is associated with the user specific information. The method continues by associating the user with a selected selected skin from a plurality of user interface (UI) skins. The association between the user and the selected UI skin is based on the user specific information. Thereafter, the method continues by configuring the application to display the selected UI skin as a default UI skin for the application.

Abstract: Described is a technology for two-dimensional navigation among user interface controls of a canvas based on up, down, left or right navigational commands received from a two-dimensional directional input mechanism such as a D-Pad, such as on a mobile device. Navigation includes iterating over candidate controls to determine which will control be chosen receive focus based on a received navigational command, the control that currently has focus, and criteria including distance and relative position of each candidate control to the control currently having focus. Vertical distance (alignment) as well as absolute distance may be used to determine the candidate control having the least computed distance. Direction and whether the candidate control is also currently visible in a viewport when the control having focus is currently visible in the viewport are other criteria that may be used in selecting a chosen control on which focus will be set.

Abstract: A management console managing a data handling system stores user interface panel elements, and an attached device sends directions to the management console to select at least one of the stored user interface panel elements for a graphical user interface (GUI) panel for the device. The device sends directions to the management console to correlate at least one device command for the device to the GUI panel for the attached device; and the management console generates GUI panel(s) employing the selected user interface panel element(s); and calls commands in response to operation of inputs to the GUI panel(s), the correlated command being available to be called. Further, the attached device(s) send directions to the management console as to labeling of the GUI panel for the attached device; and the management console inserts label(s) in the user interface panel element per the labeling directions.

Abstract: A Graphical User Interface is provided that presents multi-level configurable parameter values for an item in a condensed and scannable format. The GUI enables a user to clearly and quickly discern the relationship between the parameters. The GUI can also reflect modifications to parameters that result from a selection of a parameter value. The GUI can be used to define options and related settings on a form or client GUI, such as a job ticket.

Abstract: An interface system and method for creation and configuration of a connection between routers is provided. The interface comprises facility for entry of physical connection information, and entry of protocols selection and configuration information. Information for selection and configuring routing instances, network interfaces, and protocols for the connection is only requested from the user interface once before it is forwarded to an NMS to carry out the steps for actually setting-up the connection. Transport and protocol profiles for re-use with various physical connections are also provided.

Abstract: A toolbar displays dynamically configured controls based on a size of a window in which an application is running and on the media type presented. A large set of available controls may be available for the toolbar; however, the size of the application window in which the application is running may not be able to display all of the available controls in the window in such as way as to be comfortably used by a user. Accordingly, the controls may be scaled, filtered, and interchanged according to the “real estate” available in the application window, as well as other contextual aspects of the application, to provide a more user-friendly experience.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for validating a user configuration of a computer system are provided. The method generally includes receiving, through a user interface of a configuration system, a user configuration selection, wherein the user configuration selection modifies the configuration of the computer system. Based on the user configuration selection, one or more contexts in a collection of contexts may be modified. The collection of contexts may be applied to part information for a part of the computer system to determine applicable part information for the modified configuration.

Abstract: The generation and usage of workflows for processing data on a printing device includes receiving a request to create a workflow for a printing device. One or more operations that may be included in the workflow are displayed, and user-selection of at least one of the one or more operations is received. The user-selected operations are added to the workflow, and a user-selection of an order in which multiple ones of the user-selected operations are to be performed is received. When the creation of the workflow is completed, an indication of such is received and the workflow is saved. According to another aspect, a request to process data is received, the appropriate workflow identified, and the data processed by performing the operations in the sequence in an order identified by the sequence.

Abstract: The invention provides improvements on a digital data processing system of the type having a first set of hosts, storage devices or other components coupled for communication with a first network manager. A second set of components is likewise coupled to a second network manager. Communications between the network managers and their respective sets of components utilize different protocols, the first network manager referring to components of the first set with identifiers that are unique to those respective components under the first protocol, and the second network manager referring to components of the second set with identifiers that are unique to those respective components under the second protocol.

Abstract: A selection accelerator in topology views is presented. A user uses a topology view to manage a computer network whereby the topology view includes a plurality of nodes and their relationships that correspond to computer network components. When a user selects a primary node, processing identifies related nodes, and displays a relationship identifier next the related nodes, such as a hierarchal level corresponding to the primary node. By viewing the relationship identifiers, the user is able to depress a key to select a plurality of related nodes based upon their relationships. In addition, the user is able to request an invert select which informs processing to select nodes related to the primary node which are not currently selected.

Abstract: A method for setting screens of plural inboard indicators connected to an inboard network via a communication line includes connecting a terminal to the inboard network. The method also includes loading the terminal with data from the plural indicators and setting the screens of the indicators in the terminal. Additionally, the method includes sending screen setting data from the terminal to the respective indicators via the communication line after setting the screens of the indicators.

Abstract: A method is provided of presenting to a user a visual representation of a frame 275 resident at a central office 20 of a telecommunications system. The method includes the steps of: accessing a database including data as to a current condition of the frame; displaying, based on the accessed data, a graphical representation of the frame 275, the graphical representation including a visual indication of the current condition of the frame 275; and allowing a user to interface with the graphical representation to effect a mapping between the frame 275 and telecommunications lines leading to and from the frame 275.

Abstract: A system and method for dynamically configuring a graphical user interface (GUI) of a mobile communication device allow the GUI displayed by the application software running locally on the mobile device to be determined by a remote GUI server without the need for user intervention. The GUI need not be predetermined in the application software installation package, nor downloaded manually by the user. Rather, the set of graphical elements that make up the GUI on the local device can be controlled by the remote GUI server. Upon installation, startup, or during operation of the local client application, the local client can contact the remote GUI server and be provided with the GUI elements that the client requires. Accordingly, the present invention provides remote configuration and manipulation of the GUI elements displayed on a mobile communication device to create new and different user interfaces on that device without user intervention.

The selection of the at least one storage parameter includes a selection of a vendor type of a storage system resource of the storage area network. Based on the selection information, the network management application correlates the selection of the at least one host resource with the selection of the vendor type to identify: i) storage devices of the storage system resource corresponding to the at least one storage parameter, and ii) access control rights of the at least one host resource with respect to the storage devices.

The invention may comprise a graphical user interface, a computing device for operating the graphical user interface, a computer-readable medium storing instructions for controlling a computing device to utilize the run the graphical interface, and methods of interacting with the user through the graphical user interface. Abstract: A method, system, and computer-usable medium for visually representing resource usage in a multi-node data processing system. According to a preferred embodiment of the present invention a graphical user interface (GUI) stored in system memory visually expresses the multi-node data processing system as a collection of cubes, where each cube among the collection of cubes represents at least one node within the multi-node data processing system. The GUI specifies a currently-running application to measure a level of resources utilized by the currently-running application. The GUI indicates a type of resource information to be displayed and display the indicated type of resource information related to the currently-running application utilizing the collection of cubes.

Abstract: A method and system for imaging a workstation (or other device) and then associating that image with a specific device are disclosed. The present invention enables an administrator to take an image of a basic workstation (with minimum or no applications) and then when the image is downloaded to the workstation, the service may look into a Directory and download with the image the set of files associated with an Application Object that has been associated with the image in the Directory. Another embodiment of the present invention further provides a method and system for applying an image to a workstation that had never been imported into the tree. A rules-based system may be implemented to enable one or more workstations that are booting to find the image and have it applied.

Abstract: When activities are operated in parallel, and there is only one status display, an ordered list is implemented with three methods of access: insertion at the top, removal from anywhere, and read of the top item. Items kept on this list are the status codes or words for the activities that are currently in progress. When a new activity begins, its status code or word is inserted at the top of the list. Whenever an activity completes, its code or word is removed from the list regardless of its location in the list, and in such a way as to preserve the order of the remaining entries in the list. User interface specification data is transmitted from a device to the multifunction peripheral. User interface specification data defines a desired display and operation behavior for the user interface. Result data is received at the device from the multifunction peripheral. Result data defines whether the user interface was updated to reflect the user interface specification data. Other aspects provide for copying the graphical user interface from a source multifunction peripheral to a destination multifunction peripheral, scheduling a point in time to update one or more graphical user interfaces to reflect the user interface specification data, and establishing a number of uses to apply the user interface specification data to the one or more user interfaces.

Abstract: Systems and methods that automatically arrange, or re-arrange, object nodes in a diagram such that the total length of all associations between nodes and the number of overlapping associations is reduced or minimized. In mathematical terms, the process simplifies the graphical representation of an arbitrary graph. In one aspect, processes of the invention use a physical model of particle interactions to determine a minimal energy state, with object nodes modeled as particles and the associations between the object nodes modeled as interaction forces. Perturbations applied to the system allow for a determination of a minimal energy state.

Abstract: A method, system, apparatus, and computer program product are presented for management of a distributed data processing system on behalf of a plurality of management customers. A set of logical networks within the distributed data processing system and/or a set of physical networks in the distributed data processing system are associated with an anchor object. A topology map can be generated and displayed in which a root node of the topology map is the anchor object. Each anchor object is uniquely associated with a customer for which the distributed data processing system is managed. The topology display can be restricted such that portions of topology information are displayed to an administrative user in accordance with the authorized security access of the user.

Abstract: A system and method for determining a storage configuration for an application, where the storage configuration specifies a storage layout for data objects associated with the application. A Storage Configurator program may display a graphical user interface (GUI) for guiding the user through creation of the storage configuration. User input to specify properties of the storage configuration and/or properties of the application may be received to the graphical user interface. The Storage Configurator program may determine a storage configuration for the application, based on the user input received to the graphical user interface. In one embodiment, the Storage Configurator may provide an option allowing the user to save the storage configuration, e.g., in a file or database. Saving the storage configuration may allow the user to utilize the storage configuration at a later time. In one embodiment, the Storage Configurator may also provide an option allowing the user to implement the storage configuration.
