Abstract: In order to facilitate an input of a process condition for allowing any of a plurality of image forming apparatuses to form an image, a PC communicative to a plurality of MFPs connected via a network obtains function information defining a function held by each of a plurality of MFPs, displays a common condition setting window for accepting an input of a process condition for performing a common function held by all of a plurality of image forming apparatuses, based on the obtained function information, accepts an input of a process condition, and outputs the accepted process condition to any one of a plurality of MFPs.

Abstract: Apparatus and method for displaying menu lists and activating applications in conjunction with electronic devices that respectively load contents and an information device that reproduces the contents stored in the electronic devices. Connection to the electronic devices is detected, and a menu list is generated. The menu list automatically updates to include additional applications corresponding to electronic devices when connections to the electronic devices are respectively detected. This provides an updated menu list from which selection is made to activate a predetermined application to perform an operation related to the relevant electronic device.

Abstract: A mechanism for ensuring security even when there is a possibility that an information processing apparatus capable of being operated from an external device via a network is connected to a global network. An information processing apparatus has a NIC section for connection a network, and can be remotely operated from an external device connected to the network. A CPU determines whether the network to which the NIC section is connected is a local network. If it is determined that the network to which the NIC is connected is not a local network, the CPU restrict remote operation from the external device.

Abstract: A data collection and viewing application provides a user interface that allows a user to quickly and easily examine a particular batch process or a batch run, to compare separate batch runs and/or to determine whether the particular batch run deviates from a norm, without having to perform a lot of manual data manipulation. To this end, the user interface provides or creates a compact graphical representation of a batch, illustrating a number of different types of batch-related data in relation to one another in a manner that enables a user to easily view or understand the operation of the batch run, either alone or as compared with one or more other batch runs. Abstract: Systems and methods are described for using a mobile phone to control a computing device. In one implementation, a communication protocol stack is established that includes a wireless layer, such as a BLUETOOTH wireless protocol (IEEE Standard 802.15.1) stack, a communication layer that multiplexes the wireless layer into virtual channels, and an application adaptation layer by which the mobile phone controls and previews content from each of multiple applications on the computing device. The communication protocol stack dynamically maps mobile phone keys to computer keyboard messages for controlling the applications on the computing device. A data packet structure is established for communications between the mobile phone and the computing device via the communication protocol stack.

Abstract: A user interface for multimedia centers advantageously utilizes hand-held inertial-sensing user input devices to select channels and quickly navigate the dense menus of options. Extensive use of the high resolution and bandwidth of such user input devices is combined with strategies to avoid unintentional inputs and with dense and intuitive interactive graphical displays.

Abstract: A host computer splits a display of the host computer into a grid including a plurality of grid areas. The host computer tracks a rate of display updates in each grid area. In addition, the host computer calculates a weighted average of all of the grid areas that an updated region of the display overlaps. The weighted average is based on the rate of display updates of each overlapped grid area and the percentage of the updated region that overlaps each overlapped grid area. The host computer compresses the updated region using a compression method selected from plural different compression methods. The selected compression method is selected based on the weighted average. The host computer transmits the compressed updated region to the remote client device.

According to one aspect, an application window display on a display device can expose a user not only to local media content but also to remote media content that is associated with the local media content. The local media content is stored locally, while the remote media content is stored remotely and available from a remote media server. According to another aspect, the remote media content to be displayed can be determined in a manner that is dependent on a user interaction with the local media content. According to still a further aspect, the manner by which the remote media content is displayed can be dependent on the availability of remote media content at the remote media server.

Abstract: A system and method for efficiently copying books. According to the system and method, a user inputs a book identification into a peripheral device to cause the peripheral device to access an electronic version of the book. Upon so accessing, the peripheral is adapted to print the electronic version as specified. The book identification may be any suitable identification, such as a book ISBN number, a bar code, a title, etc.

Abstract: A system and method for facilitating user access to remote content from a current location is presented. The method comprises the following steps. An activation gesture is detected. The activation gesture includes a location. At least one base icon on the display screen located at a distance greater than a predetermined distance from the activation gesture's location is selected. A target icon for each selected base icon is generated. The target icons are output for display in proximity to the activation gesture's location until an action dismissing the target icons is detected.
