Scrolling (e.g., Spin Dial) Patents (Class 715/830)
  • Patent number: 7315809
Abstract: A computer-aided reading system offers assistance to a user who is reading in a non-native language, as the user needs help, without requiring the user to divert attention away from the text. In one implementation, the reading system is implemented as a reading wizard for a browser program. The reading wizard is exposed via a graphical user interface (UI) that allows the user to select a word, phrase, sentence, or other grouping of words in the non-native text. The reading wizard automatically determines whether the selected one word comprises part of a phrase; allows the user to choose whether to view a translation of a single word or a translation of a phrase that includes the single word in response to selection by the user of the single word. The multiple translations are presented in a pop-up window, in the form of a scrollable box and is scrollable, located near the selected text to minimize distraction of the user.

  • Patent number: 7260788
Abstract: In a list display device, a current item frame being selectively intended at present is arranged in a central zone of a display screen, and precedent item frames and subsequent item frames of the current item frame are separated and arranged in a staircase pattern on right and left sides of the central zone. An item frame immediately before the current item frame and an item frame immediately after the current item frame arc arranged in the foreground of the precedent and subsequent item frames. In response to an input operation, the current item frame is moved so as to overlap one of the foreground item frames, and the other foreground item frame is moved to the central zone, such that an item frame, which was adjacent to the other foreground item frame before the other foreground item frame was moved to the central zone, is displayed in the foreground.

  • Patent number: 7248263
Abstract: A method and user interface are provided for independently and conveniently scaling y-values of multiple data sets whereby the data sets may be plotted against a common y-axis and provide satisfactory variability. A multiplier is selected by which data points in a data set are multiplied, allowing plots of multiple data sets to be graphed against a common range of y-axis values. The initial multiplier may be calculated and selected automatically by the computer on which the graphing is performed or may be manually selected by a user. If the results of the graphing are not satisfactory to the user, the user may change the multiplier for any data set. A spin button may be provided to enable the user to easily increment or decrement a multiplier in predefined steps, such as by factors of 10. Additionally, a computer-generated indicator may be displayed to assist the user in selecting a different multiplier.

  • Patent number: 7245286
Abstract: A cellular telephone with a pointing device that facilitates operations for line scrolling and page scrolling, in which the moving speed of a pointer can be controlled with respect to each on-screen display. The pointing device includes a pointer-operating button having a range of sliding movement. The pointer-operating button can be pressed down and slide within the sliding movement range by single finger operation, and is located in the center of the sliding movement range when not being operated. The pointer-operating button returns to the center position when released in sliding operation, and returns to its former condition when released from the pressed state in pressing operation. Besides, the sliding movement range defines a pointer movement frame. A switch to line scrolling mode or page scrolling mode is made by bringing a pointer into contact with the top edge or the bottom edge of the pointer movement frame. The moving speed of the pointer can be controlled with respect to each on-screen display.

  • Patent number: 7197759
Abstract: A method for displaying an electronic program guide (EPG) to a viewer. The method includes displaying one or more data slices representative of broadcast programming to a viewer. In response to input from the viewer, the displayed number of data slices is increased, for example, from one slice to two slices. In browser mode the viewer can scroll through multiple EPG data slices without selecting to view full mode EPG, while in full mode the EPG can expand from a single column of data slices to multiple columns of data slices based upon viewer selections. The EPGs of the present invention can display programming that a viewer is more likely to watch at a particular time than other programming. A data slice representing the predicted programming can be inserted into the EPG so that the viewer can identify programming that is likely to be of interest.

Abstract: A user interface and methods for using a user interface for controlling processing of time-based media files. In one exemplary method, a graphical representation of a time line for a time-based media is displayed along with a graphical representation of a current time along the graphical representation of the time line. A start graphical indicator and a stop graphical indicator is also displayed along the graphical representation of the time line. A portion of the time-based media may be selected for presentation by dragging or positioning at least one of the start graphical indicator and the stop graphical indicator along the graphical representation of the time line. In another aspect of the invention, an exemplary method allows for the adaptive control of a portion of the interface which indicates time relating to a time-based media. An input speed is determined where this input is to change the portion and the rate at which the change to this portion occurs is dependent upon the input speed.
