With Cooperating Roller Patents (Class 72/197)
  • Patent number: 5085411
Abstract: An apparatus for processing grain-oriented electrical steel strip has a groove-scribing unit, which comprises a groove-scribing roll mounted above a pressing roll, disposed on the entry side of an insulation coating unit. A bridle roll is provided above the groove-scribing roll so that the strip may be passed to the groove-scribing and insulating coating units via the bridle roll. The apparatus also has a device for guiding the travel of the bridle roll from above the groove-scribing roll to below the horizontal pass line of the strip and vice versa. A moving device attached to the bridle roll permits the bridle roll to travel up and down along the guiding device together with the strip passed therearound. When the bridle roll is positioned above the groove-scribing roll, the groove-scribing and support rolls are kept close to each other, thereby scribing grooves in the surface of the strip held between the two rolls before the strip is passed to the insulation coating unit.

  • Patent number: 4627258
Abstract: An apparatus for shaping a strip, especially a metal strip includes a pair of working rolls which are provided with a plurality of forming tools spaced about the circumference of the rolls. Arranged before the working rolls is a pair of guide rolls which run in synchronism with the strip speed. In order to be able to increase the operating speed of the apparatus, i.e. to allow the working rolls to run at a higher speed than the advance speed of the strip, in between the guide rolls and the working rolls a roller is located which is movable in a direction perpendicular to the advance motion of the strip and is supported by the strip itself and by springs located in respective casing. A compensation between the different speeds of the guide rolls and the working rolls is provided by the gradual depression of the roller by the strip against the force of the spring.

  • Patent number: 4509571
Abstract: A wooden truss structure comprises upper and lower chords, each of which is grooved on the side facing the opposite chord. A web member formed of sheet material, such as plywood, interconnects the chords and fits within the chord grooves. At the web/groove interface, the webs are scalloped to provide alternating alignment guide areas and glue vent areas which extend above the interface and allow the escape of excess glue from the groove. The scalloping, in addition to venting the glue line, forms individual, pressurized glue pockets which assure even glue distribution. The scalloping is preferably provided by pressing the wood web material to compress it at the glue vent areas and thus permit the web member, due to its memory, to expand after contact with the glue. This expansion pressurizes the glue pockets and forces glue from the joint area into the wood further enhancing the expansion process. The web is rigidly bonded to the chord members, all while being aligned by the alignment guide portion.

  • Patent number: 4503696
Abstract: In the production of coined sheet products, particularly sheet steel, rolling pressures sufficient to produce a decorative pattern often result in the formation of undesirable "spikes" on the sheet surface. These "spikes" can require numerous paint coatings for effective coverage. Spikes are eliminated by use of a roll design in which the peaks of the pattern roll are provided with a severely sloping draft angle, the minimum angle for "spike" elimination being a function of the roll diameter, the coined depth of the pattern, the thickness and hardness of the sheet itself and the ratio of the volume of the pattern peaks to the pattern valleys.

  • Patent number: 4338807
Abstract: Billets of hot steel are hot rolled through a series of rolling stands to form an elongated flat. This flat is first worked to a predetermined thickness and width and then subjected to an edging pass at a succeeding stand. The edging pass is comprised of a pair of rolls having spaced apart, aligned grooves to receive the flats. The groove in one of the rolls is provided with a plurality of holes having certain characteristics. The depths of the roll grooves, the distance they are spaced apart, the depth and other characteristics of the holes provided in the one grooved roll and the widths of the roll grooves are all adjusted with respect to the predetermined dimensions of the flats entering the edging pass so that desired serrations are imparted to the flat as it passes through the edging pass. A final flat pass may be utilized to finalize the dimensions of the finished, serrated flat. The holes are cut into the roll groove by electric discharge machining.

  • Patent number: 4210009
Abstract: Fine fibres of steel for use as concrete reinforcement are produced by longitudinally slitting continuous steel strip to form narrow strip segments and severing the strip segments at intervals along their length. The strip is slit longitudinally on passing between a pair of nip rollers having intermeshing circumferential tongues and grooves so that penetration of the tongues into the grooves severs the strip longitudinally. The resulting strip segments are passed between chopping rollers which chop them into discontinuous fibres and also deform the thus formed fibre ends to promote anchorage in the concrete.

  • Patent number: 4193282
Abstract: A rolling machine for reducing the cross-sectional dimensions of an elongate workpiece, such as a steel billet, has two pairs of alternately operating rolls, each of which is journalled in an individual roll carrier. Each carrier is rotated about a carrier axis which is inclined at an angle of about 45.degree. to the axis of rotation of the roll journalled in the carrier. The carrier axes form the sides of a square around the passline which is normal to the plane in which the carrier axes are located. As the carriers rotate the two pairs of rolls alternately sweep over the workpiece and intermittently contact and reduce the workpiece in directions which are mutually at right angles. To avoid the formation of sharp edges to the rolled workpiece, either each roll is collared to enclose a workpiece edge, or each carrier additionally carries an edger roll which rounds that edge.

One or more indentation rolls having a resilient roll surface are arranged to run in pressurized contact with said embossing roll, said resilient surface being sufficiently resilient to permit indentation of said resilient surface by said male die formations. One indentation roll may be arranged to run in contact with the embossing roll at a point around the circumference thereof spaced down stream from the contact between said embossing roll and the other indentation roll thereby applying tension and pressure to the strip thereby holding the strip in position as it passes around the embossing roll. Tension roll means is arranged upstream around which said sheet metal strip runs, whereby said sheet metal strip is maintained in tension as it passes around both the indentation roll and said embossing roll.
