  • Patent number: 4796450
Abstract: A system for processing steel strips in a hot strip mill includes an apparatus and method for removing the oxide layer in the finishing mill process such that the final thickness of the oxide layer is much less than previously possible. In order to reduce the thickness of the oxide layer, the invention provides for the removal of oxide scales from the surface of the steel strips at a distance in front of the working rolls of the finishing mill that minimizes the time the strip is exposed to ambient conditions after it is descaled and before it is received between the pair of working rolls. By minimizing this exposure time, the thickness of the oxide layers in the finished strips is substantially reduced.

  • Patent number: 4793172
Abstract: Rolling mill work and back-up rolls comprising an arbor with a sleeve shrunk thereon have circumferential grooves formed in the external surface of the arbor, through which heating or cooling liquid is supplied from external sources so as to expand or contract the sleeve and change the roll crown and contour. The fins, or material between grooves, may have higher heat conductivity than the material of the arbor and sleeve, and are proportioned to transmit rolling forces without reducing roll stiffness. A liquid supply system provides liquids of different temperatures to selected sections of the grooves along the roll working surface; and strip of different widths but of uniform gauge across the strip is rolled by suitably adjusting the temperatures of the hot and cold liquids so supplied.

  • Patent number: 4785646
Abstract: A method of water cooling a hot-rolled steel plate is disclosed. In this method, while a hot-rolled steel plate is being advanced lengthwise, a plurality of nozzles spray cooling water to the steel plate, and thus the plate is cooled to a predetermined temperature at a predetermined cooling rate. Before, while and after the plurality of nozzles carry out water-cooling, temperatures are consistently measured at predetermined temperature measurement points in cross-sectional areas of temperature measurement positions which are arranged lengthwise at predetermined locations of the steel plate. Each time such measurement is performed, degree of deformation of the plate is calculated on the basis of temperature differences between the temperature measurement points. When the calculated degree of deformation is not within an allowable range, corrections are made on the distribution of the water supplied by the plurality of nozzles.

Abstract: An apparatus for continuously cooling a heated metal plate lying horizontally, which comprises: an upper cooling water ejecting means, arranged above the metal plate in parallel to the width direction thereof, for ejecting cooling water onto the upper surface of the metal plate; a water tank, arranged below the metal plate, for receiving cooling water; and a lower cooling water ejecting means having a lower cooling water ejecting bore, arranged in the water tank in parallel to the width direction of the metal plate. The lower cooling water ejecting means ejects, in the form of a jet stream, cooling water from the lower cooling water ejecting bore together with cooling water received in the water tank, onto the lower surface of the metal plate. The above-mentioned jet stream is surrounded by a jet stream guide duct arranged between the lower cooling water ejecting means and the lower surface of the metal plate.

  • Patent number: 4539830
Abstract: A thin metal strip is made by hot-rolling a strip workpiece, stretch-bend leveling the hot-rolled strip workpiece immediately after hot-rolling it, tensioning the strip workpiece with a predetermined tension while stretch-bend leveling it, and thereafter coiling up the workpiece. In addition the workpiece is rapidly cooled immediately after stretch-bend leveling it and before coiling it up. Thus the workpiece is stretch-bend leveled before it cools so it can be treated while still about 1100.degree. C., at which temperature it is still very plastic. The workpiece can therefore be deformed greatly while under modest tension, so as to produce a very thin product that is very uniform. The tension in the strip merely serves to keep the workpiece looped over as much an arc as possible around the stretch-bending rolls.

  • Patent number: 4534198
Abstract: An apparatus used in combination with a hot-rolling line having a succession of roll stands through which passes a strip workpiece in a horizontal transport direction has at least one vessel downstream of the roll stands in the direction and aligned in the direction therewith. This vessel is formed with an upstream inlet and a downstream outlet. A bath of a liquid coolant fills the vessel to a level above the inlet and outlet openings. Guides draw the workpiece from the roll stands into the inlet, through the vessel, and out of the outlet thereof. Thus the workpiece is wholly immersed in and cooled by the liquid coolant within the vessel. A pump feeds fresh coolant into the vessel and withdraws hot coolant therefrom. A plurality of such vessels, each with a respective bath and pump means, is provided with all of the inlets and outlets aligned. The inlet and outlet are formed as horizontally extending slots closely conforming the cross-sectional shape of the workpiece.

  • Patent number: 4527408
Abstract: A method and apparatus for quenching steel rod in a high speed rolling mill is provided wherein a liquid coolant is preliminarily applied to the rod prior to its exiting from the mill finishing train in order to increase the column strength of the exiting rod by lowering the surface temperature thereof to less than about 950.degree. C. Thereafter, as the rod progresses through additional liquid cooling devices on the way to the mill laying head, tractive forces are applied to the rod. The aforesaid increase in rod column strength acts in concert with the application of tractive force to insure that the rod has sufficient rigidity and forward momentum to pass from the finishing train through the liquid cooling devices and to and through the laying head.
