  • Patent number: 5520039
Abstract: A straightening apparatus with a plurality of rotatable straightening rollers arranged in two parallel planes. The axles of the rollers are supported in cassettes arranged in a housing holder, whereby one of the cassettes or the cassettes of one plane or also of both planes are adjustably arranged by means of an adjusting device. Each cassette has a housing in the form of a hollow cylinder and is exchangeably arranged in fitted bores. Preferably, the axial forces transmitted from the straightening roller to the axle are absorbed by a ball bearing, and the radial forces by a pin bearing. The ball raceway for the ball bearing is made directly in the hollow cylindrical housing and axle, and the pin bearing is arranged directly between the housing and the axle.

  • Patent number: 5400708
Abstract: A roll assembly comprising a rotatable roll (1 in FIG. 2) and a second roll (2 in FIG. 2) cooperating therewith, in which a pressing element (17) to effect displacement between the rolls along a pressure plane of the roll assembly is located in one of the rolls (1,2) and in which both rolls are supported at either end by respective support members (5,6). Prior to operation of the roll assembly, dumbbell-like shaped connecting parts (7) installed in corresponding cut-outs (9) in the support members (5,6) are tensioned and thereby securely form-locked by actuating the pressing element (17). Locking action is released by subsequent deactivation of the pressing element (17) after which the connecting parts (7) can be withdrawn. Two principal advantages of this arrangement, are the compacter construction, enabled by the fact that the frame no longer bears the pressing forces of the roll assembly, and the ease and speed with which components such as rolls, roll jackets or felt belts can be changed.

  • Patent number: 5365764
Abstract: In a rolling mill comprising upper and lower work rolls crossed each other to perform strip crown control, a straight line connecting the center of an operation side screwdown screw and the center of a drive side screwdown screw is inclined relative to a line perpendicular to the rolling direction. A cross angle .theta. to be controlled is changed in opposite plus and minus directions about the straight line connecting both the screwdown centers. A large extent of strip crown control can be achieved with a smaller cross deviation than usual in the prior art, thereby permitting omission of an equalizer beam. Further, change in the extent by which strip crown is varied upon control with respect to the cross angle becomes substantially linear and hence control is more easily conducted. Since the cross angle 2.theta. between the two work rolls is larger than 2.degree., the transition temperature is not changed and uniformity in quality can be ensured.

Abstract: Two rolls are supported laterally in bearings in two pairs of side-by-side members with the members being supported by a frame. Adjustment of synchronization and registration is accomplished by adjusting the relative positions of the side-by-side members in or against the rolling direction. The relative positions of the rolls can be adjusted by use of notches engraved in the ends of the rolls; and can be continuously monitored with the aid of a stroboscope light. Magnetic signal devices and other sensors are also suitable for monitoring. Continuous adjustment of roll position is accomplished through low-pitch screws or through hydraulic or electric positioning motors.

  • Patent number: 4829842
Abstract: Spur gearing including an outer gear rim firmly attached to the roller to be driven. A first self-aligning bearing disposed within the outer gear rim mounts the gear rim to a firm support. A pinion outside of the outer gear rim meshes with the outer gear rim. A journal in the pinion connects it to a support bracket. A second self-aligning bearing joins the pinion to the journal. A pinion driving coupling shaft is coupled to the pinion for driving the pinion to rotate. The pinion can incline with respect to the coupling shaft. To limit the angle of tilt of the pinion, in one embodiment, there is a third self-aligning bearing within the pinion to one axial side of the second bearing and a radial gap between an extension of the journal for the second bearing and the third bearing, for allowing and limiting tilting of the pinion axis, and the elements are so sized that the tilt angle of the pinion is limited to about 1.degree. and preferably to less than 0.6 .degree..

  • Patent number: 4796452
Abstract: A setting device for adjusting the position of a roll with respect to a mating roll, as in the press section of a paper machine, or the like. A roll trunnion or journal at the end of the roll is received in a bearing which is supported in a bearing housing that is axially outward of the roll. The outer part of the bearing is in turn supported to an actuator which is shiftable to move the roll transversely of its axis with respect to the mating roll. A base plate hydraulically supports and raises the actuator for the bearing housing. A guide plate supported to the base plate extends past the roll trunnion or journal. Linear motion guide elements for guiding the motion of the bearing housing under the influence of the actuator are provided. They are guide claws on the bearing housing which wrap around the guide plate and move along it. An additional actuator piston operates on the roll trunnion or journal to move it in the opposite direction from the actuator.

Abstract: A novel process is disclosed by which contorted or distorted sheet gauge steel and other metal scrap material, generated by stamping and other deforming metal-working operations, is flattened by rolls for the purpose of increasing its bulk density and to provide a scrap product that can more efficiently be transported and used for remelting in steel-making and foundry furnaces. The process involves the steps of feeding contorted sheet metal scrap between a pair of moving compressive surfaces, compressing the scrap to substantial flatness, and discharging the flattened steel scrap. The novel apparatus for performing the process is also disclosed.
