  • Patent number: 4580323
Abstract: A roller assembly for a stand of a torsionless finishing block of a multi-stand rolling mill for producing continuous wire from a round elongated rod is disclosed. The assembly is characterized by the provision of at least one bearing mounted on the drive shaft between the rollers and the drive shaft of the stand, whereby the stand is operable to calibrate the finished wire. Alignment devices are provided for longitudinally centering the bearing relative to the stand roller and circlips connect the bearing with the roller in the centered position. Spacing elements are mounted on the drive shaft at opposite ends of the bearing to longitudinally position the bearing relative to the shaft. In the absence of a finished wire to be calibrated, the rollers are driven at the speed of rotation of the drive shaft. When finished wire enters the stand and comes in contact with the rollers, the rollers rotate at the speed of rotation of the wire.

  • Patent number: 4301721
Abstract: A roll-journal bearing mounting is provided by a movable bearing housing from which pistons rigidly extend in opposite directions into cylinders rigidly fixed against displacement. Introduction of pressurized fluid to the cylinders moves the bearing housing either way in the direction of the pistons and cylinders. Consequently, a roll journaled by bearings in the bearing housings of two of the mountings can be moved towards and from a counter roll to apply roll nip pressure. At the same time the rigidly extending pistons in their rigidly fixed cylinders also function to hold the journal loading in a right angular direction, eliminating the need for the use of separate devices for that purpose.

  • Patent number: 4290289
Abstract: A method of aligning each of the rolls in a rolling mill such that each of the axes of rotation are substantially parallel to one another and do not present a crossed-roll condition. The alignment method does not involve the disassembly of the chock arrangement and associated bearings, but utilizes the determination of a special orientation of each of the lateral chock face planes with respect to the axis of rotation of the associated roll. Once this spacial orientation has been determined, it is then utilized in the analysis of the chock, roll and bearing tolerances and alignment and in the selective placement of necessary corrective spacing elements between the lateral chock face planes and their support within the rolling mill to physically adjust the chock face plane and the axis of rotation of the associated roll such that each of the axes of rotation of each roll are parallel to one another.

  • Patent number: 4154080
Abstract: There is disclosed an apparatus for supporting roll chocks of a work roll in a roll stand housing. This apparatus includes a thrust transmitting head member between the roll chock and a rolling force effecting mechanism such as a screw of a screw down mechanism. • Patent number: 4117705
Abstract: Reduction of bars or rods with reducing rolls of large diameter on arbors in which lateral pressure is applied to the reducing rolls to suppress rotation of the rolls relative to the arbor. The pressure is applied by an annular shoe on the arbor. The shoe and an annular fluid activator, on the arbor form, between their facing surfaces, a sealed annular chamber and also an annular gap. The gap is accessible through the peripheries of the activator and shoe. Axial movement of the activator outwardly of the rolls is restricted by a nut on the arbor. Grease is injected into the chamber under high pressure. The shoe and activator operate as a split cylinder impressing tensile stress on the arbor between the side of the shoe remote from the activator and the nut and causing the arbor in this region to elongate and also to impress compressive force on the roll and its axial components. This elongation enlarges the width of the gap.
