Abstract: The method according to the invention for producing substantially axially symmetrical workpieces by shaping a starting material uses a die and a rotatable tool, the die being provided with a bore along the central axis thereof. Here the starting material is introduced through the bore of the die and pressed in between the die and the rotating tool such that the starting material flows outward from the central axis according to the contour of the die. The workpiece is thus produced in a single operation. Depending on the requirements for the dimensional accuracy and surface quality, mechanical finishing or calibrations are possible. Due to the material flow in the die and the rotation of the tool, shaping forces which are only small in comparison to conventional methods occur here, and so the requirements made of the tools, and so the expense, are reduced.

Abstract: A curved extrusion includes a body that has indefinite length and a cross-section, and that is formed to contour and at least one channel cut into the cross-section that is filled with deposited material such that said cross-section of said body is restored. By cutting the channels into the cross-section of the extrusion, the extrusion may be easily formed onto a contoured tool to be curved with lower forming and residual stresses and distortion. By filling the channels with deposited material, the original cross-section and strength of the extrusion can be restored. By adding a transverse stiffener, the strength of the original extrusion may not only be restored but also further improved. By depositing material to create structural features the cross-section of the extrusion may be locally changed. The method for forming curved extrusions of the present invention may be used, for example, to produce T-chords of an aircraft.

Abstract: The invention relates to a new preparation technique of composites, in details, i.e. a method of producing laminated composite materials of different alloys. In the preparation method, the bi-layer or multi-layer composites are prepared by means of the equal channel angular extrusion/pressure (ECAE/ECAP). Firstly, the appropriate alloys pairs or groups are selected, and the rational arrangements are carried out after pre-treating surfaces; then, the clad process is performed by extrusion and shear deformation in ECAE die; finally, the composite material is produced after one single pass or multiple passes clad extrusion. The annealing treatment can be performed subsequently to enhance the interfacial bonding strength by diffusion after the clad extrusion, and the heat treatment parameters consist of annealing temperature and holding time, which are chosen carefully to meet the demands of the refining microstructures and good properties for both the interfaces and individual component metals.

Abstract: A weld wire for storage on a spool of weld wire. The weld wire has a substantially linear cast in the form of an undulating curve that generally lies in a single plane. The undulating curve is a succession of generally semi-circular sections having a generally fixed radius of curvature. The linear cast is formed on the weld wire prior to the weld wire being wound on the spool of weld wire. The linear cast is at least partially retained on the weld wire after the weld wire is unwound from the spool and during the feeding of the weld wire through a welding machine.

Abstract: A process for shaping a high strength container, particularly an aerosol container and a container obtained through such process. Generally, aerosol containers made of aluminum or tin are obtained by conventional embedding processes from sheet disks and have cylindrical bodies with upper tapering finishing at a curl for fixing a valve cover and are closed by convex and profiled cross section bottoms, for forming a support region for upstanding the container. The bottom of such containers is obtained before tapering by means of a blow or front shock once the cylindrical body having planar circular base is shaped, this impact causing undesirable stresses on the body side wall and material accumulation at the annular region joining with this wall since the bottom thickness is not uniform.

  • Patent number: 6536255
Abstract: This invention is a process for making micro-multiport tubing for use in heat exchangers. The tubing is a flat body with a row of side-by-side passageways, which are separated by upright webs. Processing of this tubing involves extrusion, a straightening and cutting operation, a rolling step to reduce the thickness of the flat body and to obtain ultra small voids, assembly and furnace brazing of the heat exchanger. This invention improves the grain size of the metal in the tubing and also improves the metallurgical strength of the tubing. There is at least 10 percent change in material thickness. The strain is concentrated at the center of the web and results in at least enough cold work to produce fine recrystallized grains during the brazing thermal cycle. The amount of grain growth is controlled and the improvement in the metallurgical strength is achieved.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a continuous shear deformation device. In order to occur shear deformation at the position at which a material is inserted into a molding path from a rotary guide apparatus for the purpose of solving the problem that the amount of shear deformation of a material is non-uniform and insufficient due to the gap between the curved portion of the molding path and the lower parts of the material, there is provided a continuous shear deformation device, characterized in that a curved portion is constructed by collaboration between the rotary guide apparatus and the molding path. In addition, there are provided additional constructions for effectively performing shear deformation by a small power by reducing the friction at the molding path excepting the curved portion. The present invention thusly constructed can be utilized for continuously and effectively mass-produce sheared materials.

Abstract: A process for low cost manufacturing light-weight, heat-dissipating structures such as heatsinks, heat spreaders, and covers or lids for microelectronic components such as flip-chip integrated circuits from difficult-to-machine metal matrix composites such as aluminum silicon carbide (generically referred to as “Al—SiC” or “AlSiC”). The process involves selecting a mass produced quantity of Al—SiC material, forming that material into a thin ribbon, then stamping/coining the ribbon into the structures. The ribbon can be formed by extruding a thin strip from a billet of the Al—SiC material, then plurally rolling it. In this way, commonly available AlSiC composites manufactured in high volume for use in other applications such as cast automotive parts may be used.
