    Abstract: The invention herein illustrates a tool and method for use in joining pipes or other tubular fittings having different diameters in a telescopic type joint. The preferred tool provides a pair of dimples or marks on one of the pipes to obstruct insertion as one pipe is slid into another. The obstruction thus provides a uniform overlap of the pipes to ensure sufficient surface area for the material used in the joining process, such as a brazing metal. Overlapping uniformity provides a strong, durable joint. The tool includes a pair of jaws which can be closed along the wall of the tubular member to form for example, a pair of dimples therein. In an alternate embodiment of the pipe fitting tool only one dimple is formed in the pipe wall from a single ram.

In one embodiment, the reduced resistance bead is formed on an inner conical flange of an inverted flared end of a hollow fluid conduit. The bead presents a deformable surface as a fitting urges the flared end of the conduit into engagement with a conical seat in a receiver where eccentricity or angular variances exist between the flared end of the conduit and the conical seat. A unique method and a unique forming tool are used to form the reduced resistance bead in the flared end of the conduit simultaneously with the flaring of the end of the conduit.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for the formation of an enlarged end portion of a bar (48) by upset forging. Before upsetting, the bar end portion (46) is heated to a forging temperature and passed through a passage (40) of a form part (2,4) and into a cavity (44) with increased cross-sectional area which is defined by the form part (2,4). The portion of the cavity (44) which is located opposite the passage (40) is defined by wall (42) with a shape corresponding to the cavity's (44) cross section. For the formation of the enlarged end portion, the wall (42) is pressed against the end of the bar and upsets the bar end portion until the bar material fills the cavity (44). According to the method a bar portion which is located in the passage (40) is also heated to forging temperature, and the form part (2,4) is moved simultaneously with the wall (42), whereby this bar portion (48) is successively fed into the cavity (44) during the upsetting process.

    Abstract: A method for forming a one-piece steering shaft member, such as an externally splined male steering shaft member (or yoke shaft) or an internally splined female steering shaft member (or slip yoke) is disclosed. A hollow cylindrical tube is initially provided which is preferably formed from a blank of a metallic material, such as aluminum, having an elongation factor of at least fifteen percent. It is desirable that the tube have a uniform wall thickness and define an outer diameter which is substantially uniform along the length thereof. The outer diameter of one end of the tube is reduced from its original diameter while the outer diameter of the opposite end is maintained at its original diameter. A splined surface is formed in the reduced diameter end portion of the tube. The splined surface is formed on the external surface of the yoke shaft and on the internal surface of the slip yoke. A yoke member is then formed in the opposite end of the tube.

The first operation is to induction heat a steel tubular axle blank to a temperature less than 1500 degrees Fahrenheit. The next operation includes forcing a preform die assembly onto the tubular blank to reduce a length of the blank to a second diameter while forming an intermediate section having a first and second ramped section. The final operation includes forcing an upset die assembly onto the end of the blank to form a gathered material section formed intermediate the first ramped section and the second ramped section. The second diameter provides a pre-machined diameter for the final axle spindle and the gathered material section provides a pre-machined area for the final integral bearing shoulder.
