Patent number: 7204112Abstract: An apparatus and method of applying a lubricating material to an outer surface of a workpiece. Initially, a workpiece is provided that is preferably formed from a closed channel structural member having a circular or box-shaped cross sectional shape. Lubricating material is applied to an outer surface of the workpiece. In a second step of the method, the workpiece may be heat treated. The workpiece is then heated to elevate the temperature of the workpiece so as to cause the lubricating material to dry substantially immediately on the workpiece, thereby providing a coating of lubricating material having a substantially uniform thickness. In a fourth step of the method, a deforming process is performed on the workpiece during the period of time following the heat treatment process, and after applying the lubricating material, in which the workpiece retains the full or partial softening characteristics.Type: GrantFiled: December 30, 2002Date of Patent: April 17, 2007Assignee: Dana CorporationInventors: Robert D. Patent number: 5460023Abstract: Method and apparatus for cleaning oxide scale from rolling mill rolls comprises a cleaning spray system including a fluid header juxtaposed to a mill work roll and an associated backup roll and a plurality of nozzles equidistantly spaced along the length of the header. High pressure cleaning water sprays, for which water is supplied by a descaling pump when not in use for descaling, are directed onto a work roll, and by rotation of the header, then directed onto the associated backup roll. The water sprays are directed against the rolls at an angle from 3.degree. to 10.degree. for optimum removal of oxide scale. For even restoration of the roll surface, the cleaning spray system periodically during the cleaning operation is shifted axially along the length of the rolls a distance about one-half the spacing between adjacent nozzles.Type: GrantFiled: August 5, 1993Date of Patent: October 24, 1995Assignees: International Rolling Mill Consultants Inc., Danieli United, Inc.Inventor: Vladimir B. Patent number: 5287713Abstract: System for ironing a cylindrical portion of a workpiece, and trimming one axial end of the cylindrical portion remote from a radial bottom portion. The system uses a stepped punch having a small-diameter portion and a large-diameter portion, and a die having a die hole whose inner surface includes a tapered portion and a land portion adjacent to the small-diameter end of the tapered portion. With the small-diameter portion of the punch in abutting contact with the radial bottom portion of the workpiece, the punch and die are moved relative to each other axially of the workpiece, from an initial position in which the radial bottom portion is ahead of the land portion of the die in the moving direction, to a final position in which at least the leading end of the large-diameter portion of the punch is located within the land portion. This relative movement causes removal of a waste material at the trailing end of the workpiece.Type: GrantFiled: August 4, 1992Date of Patent: February 22, 1994Assignee: Toyota Jidosha Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Kohichi Mine, Norio Itoh

Patent number: 5282377Abstract: When drawing wire, and particularly wire of highly tenacious material which s difficult to deform, such as tungsten or molybdenum, through a die (4), lubricant is applied to the surface of the wire (1) by generating a curtain or sheet of lubricant (6, 16) emitted from a slit-like nozzle (14), and passing the wire essentially transversely through said curtain or sheet of liquid lubricant. Preferably, the wire is preheated before being passed through said sheet of lubricant so that the lubricant will dry on the preheated wire from the inside out prior to the wire being heated to optimum drawing temperature in advance of being pulled through the die. Suitable preheating temperatures are from 100.degree. C. to 500.degree. C., and the thickness of the curtain of lubricant can be between 0.05 to about 0.3 mm, with a wire thickness in the order of about 0.1 mm, permitting drawing speeds which can vary widely and can be about double of previously obtainable drawing speeds.Type: GrantFiled: June 16, 1992Date of Patent: February 1, 1994Assignee: Patent-Treuhand-Gesellschaft Fuer Elektrische Gluehlampen mbHInventors: Dietmar Illig, Oliver Eierle

Patent number: 5259225Abstract: A press machine having a composite piston assembly, a lubricant oil recovery system, and interchangeable die alignment members. The composite piston assembly includes a primary piston member and a secondary piston member attached thereto for movement with the primary piston member. The secondary piston member includes recesses for receiving a spider and a punch retainer and also has a die retainer attached thereto. The lubricant recovery system collects lubricant which leaks from the press machine during normal operation, filters such lubricant, and returns it to the lubricating system of the press machine for re-use. The interchangeable alignment numbers are of a standardized dimension whereby when received in a receptacle on the frame of the press machine, no machining to the alignment members is required because expendable spacers of a predetermined thickness are used.Type: GrantFiled: December 3, 1991Date of Patent: November 9, 1993Assignee: Hovis Precision Products Division of Rochez Bros., Inc.Inventor: Eugene P.
