  • Patent number: 4449427
Abstract: The invention relates to apparatus for machining circular saw blades and more particularly to the transport means for conveying workpieces to the machining stations of the apparatus. In accordance with the invention, the storage capability of the apparatus is accomplished by subdividing the conveying means into a work path leading through the machining stations; a return path leading through a feeding and discharging station; two branch paths wherein an endless conveyor is arranged only along the work path and associated with the branch paths there are shifting means capable of shifting a work piece carriage from the branch path to the return path; and that on the return path, work piece carriages are maintained at smaller distances than those of the endless conveyor whereby the storage capacity of the apparatus is increased. The apparatus is also adjustable to feed a plurality of different saw diameters for machining.

  • Patent number: 4440045
Abstract: A chain saw sharpener, having a fixture comprising a generally inverted U-shaped frame and a sharpening tool guide attached to a support bracket extending from the frame, which sharpening tool guide receives and guides a sharpening tool for use in sharpening the cutting links of a chain saw and is movable and may be set for sharpening of the cutting links at any angle specified by the chain saw manufacturer. The sharpening tool is a rotatable mandrel with a grinding stone at one end and structure at the opposite end for attachment to any suitable driving apparatus. A plastic shield protects the operator from being struck by metal fillings that are generated during the sharpening operation. A filing gauge attached to the frame indicates the height to which the depth gauges of the cutting links should be filed and incorporates stops to protect the cutting edges of the cutting links against contact with the file during such filing operation.

A support which is supported on the carrier is capable of swivelling relative to the carrier through at least 180.degree. about a swivel axis lying in the plane of the saw blade by a swivelling device and is capable of reciprocating along the swivel axis by a lifting device. A grinding head is supported on the support and carries a plate-shaped or cup-shaped grinding wheel and a grinding motor for driving the grinding wheel. The swivel axis in one operating position of the grinding wheel is contiguous with an active face of the grinding wheel. A second grinding wheel on the grinding head is arranged in offset relationship with respect to the first-mentioned grinding wheel.

  • Patent number: 4416169
Abstract: An automatic saw chain grinder includes a saw chain support mounted for reciprocative movement on a support carriage. A spring urges the carriage in one direction to move a cutter tooth of a supported saw chain into a grinding wheel against the residual pressure of fluid in a first single-acting hydraulic cylinder. Pressurization of the cylinder moves the carriage in the opposite direction away from the grinding wheel. The grinding wheel is spring-biased toward an active, grinding position and moved away from such position by a second single-acting hydraulic cylinder. The first and second cylinders are sized and the respective springs of the carriage and grinder selected such that upon pressurization of the common hydraulic circuit for such cylinders, the carriage retracts the cutter tooth away from the grinding wheel before the grinding wheel retracts from the grinding position.

  • Patent number: 4262558
Abstract: The present invention relates to an apparatus that is adapted to be attached adjacent to a conventional grinding machine for sharpening circular saw blades, especially the type having laterally off set teeth. The sharpening attachment of the present invention basically comprises a connecting bracket, an elongated blade support member adjustably secured to said bracket and provided with a movable traveler that is adapted to be secured to a saw blade to be sharpened. The traveler is actuated back and forth so as to bring the saw blade into sharpening engagement and disengagement with a sharpening stone forming a part of said grinding machine. In the method utilized in the case of a circular saw blade having laterally off set teeth, when secured within the sharpening attachment, every other tooth would assume a lowermost position and these teeth are first sharpened. Then the blade is turned over and the other teeth are sharpened in a like manner.

  • Patent number: 4120215
Abstract: A grinder for sharpening saw chain cutting teeth includes a base, an arcuate guide arranged on the base, a power-driven rotary grinding wheel mounted on a pivotal motor arm movable with a mounting bracket along the arcuate guide and a releasable, self-centering clamp for holding a segment of a saw chain in position beneath the grinding wheel. The clamp includes laterally opposed elongate bars which support a saw chain and which are each simultaneously displaceable at equal rates toward a preselected datum line. The preselected datum line intersects a fixed, reference axis about which the mounting bracket is angularly displaced. Because the elongate bars are movable equally with respect to the preselected datum line, the lengthwise centerline of a saw chain will always be maintained substantially aligned on the preselected datum line regardless of the width of the chain. The arcuate guide is an elongate bar having an arcuate guide track which receives the motor arm mounting bracket.

  • Patent number: 4102223
Abstract: The device is for mounting a saw chain firmly and securely for sharpening its cutter elements and for automatically advancing the cutter elements one by one consecutively through a sharpening station for sharpening by the grinding wheels. The holding device includes two pairs of holding finger elements which coact with a back plate to clamp on to the rivets of the cutter elements to be sharpened. The automatic advancing device includes an index finger mounted on a sliding platform which is slidable juxtaposed to the saw chain support. The index finger is operative to abut a selected cutter element and to advance a pair of left hand and right hand cutter elements to the sharpening station in each forward and backward movement cycle of the sliding platform. A pair of positioning plungers are provided to ensure the cutter elements are properly positioned in the shaprening station before they are clamped in place for sharpening by the grinding wheels.

  • Patent number: 4074593
Abstract: A machine for machining the teeth of circular saws includes a rotary table. The table has a plurality of cotters for holding the blades. The table is rotatable to bring each saw successively to a plurality of machining stations. At each station the saw is rotated about its axis in increments corresponding to the spacing of the teeth. After each such incremental rotation a tooth is machined. A feeding mechanism for rotating the saw, and a locking mechanism for holding the saw at each incremental position are mounted on the table at each cotter. A stationary activating mechanism is situated adjacent each machining station to actuate these mechanisms.

  • Patent number: 4064770
Abstract: A machine, wherein there are mounted on a base a sharpening mechanism with a grinding wheel, as well as a mechanism for feeding a saw to the grinding wheel and a mechanism for pitch feed of the saw relative to the grinding wheel which are in force transmitting connection therebetween. The mechanism for feeding the saw to the grinding wheel mounts a resilient clamping means for supporting the saw in a floating position and a means for braking the saw having a stop fastened thereto which cooperates, during the sharpening of edges of the adjacent saw teeth, with a cam fixed to the base so as to provide for release of the saw from braking. This machine allows the sharpening of saw teeth practically under any desired operating conditions, while improving the finish and accuracy of the manufacture.

  • Patent number: 4040313
Abstract: A grinding machine for sharpening circular saw blade teeth. The machine includes an arbor for supporting a circular saw blade at a pre-selected position relative to a grinding disc. The grinding disc is mounted to a parallelogram linkage that has a tracing pin fixed thereto. Movement of the tracing pin over the surface of a sawtooth-shaped template causes corresponding movement of the grinding disc against a selected sawtooth. Also included is a tooth indexing mechanism whereby precise spacing of the circular saw teeth is obtained. This is accomplished by a tooth spacing pattern mounted to the arbor and by an indexing pawl that facilitates rotation of the arbor in precise increments equal to desired spacing for the teeth of the blade being operated on. The arbor is pivotably mounted relative to the grinding disc to enable bevel grinding of the tooth surfaces.
