Plural Distinct Cutting Edges On Same Support Patents (Class 83/620)
  • Patent number: 5078034
Abstract: This invention is directed to means (40) for severing multiple, electrical connector housings (10) into single units. The apparatus hereof features a cutting or web severing station (40) comprising one or more horizontally reciprocating cutting bars (30), each said bar (30) at one end thereof having means (32) for mounting same on a pivoting lever arm (46, 52), and at the opposite end (34) a 1) hold-down flange (36) which acts to restrain any vertical movement of said webs, and 2) recessed web severance portion (38). Cooperating with said bar(s) is an essentially "L" shaped lever arm (46) mounted for pivotal action at the junction of the arms thereof, where one arm (48) is mounted for vertical movement by means of a hydraulic piston (50). By virtue of said vertical movement, the remaining lever arm (52), to which such cutting bar (30) is mounted, is caused to reciprocate within a given plane between a web severance position "B" and a remote position "A.

  • Patent number: 5001956
Abstract: A device for perforating a tubular film of plastic material flattened to form a roll of pre-formed bags for individual separation from the roll, has a perforating knife with a plurality of pointed teeth spaced along the bottom edge thereof disposed for reciprocal piercing of a continuous tubular film of plastic passed over a work support surface having a hollow slot therein. The teeth are hollow-ground to provide a slightly arcuate cutting edge along each tooth that produces a non linear perforation in the tubular film of plastic and partially seaprates the top layer of the plastic from the bottom layer. The teeth are spaced apart a desired distance to leave sufficient attaching tabs so that the roll of bags does not prematurely pull apart. Minimum tension and penetrating pressure are achieved with the present invention and result in less distortion and unwanted tearing of the end product and greater life for the piercing blade and a more easily separated and opened bag.

Abstract: A mechanism for cutting a tire carcass into small sections for disposal. An array of adjoining female die sections has knife edges forming the sides of each die and shearing sections forming the corners of each die. Matching, shearing fit male punches opposingly face each die and material clasping anvils extend through each die facing the punches. A tire carcass is placed between the anvils and the punches. The anvils and punches are actuated against each other clamping the tire carcass. Punch pressure overrides the opposing anvil pressure, driving the combination of anvil, carcass and punch through the die. The forward extending knife edges penetrate the rubber of the carcass, shearing the rubber as the carcass is held taut between the anvils and the punches. The punches then proceed through the die, shearing the reinforcing cords against the corner shearing sections. The clamping action of the anvils and punches substantially prevents the carcass from escaping the cutter.

Abstract: A method for shearing a plate-like workpiece using a punch press includes providing a punch having two adjacent blades disposed at a specified angle with respect to one another and a die having two blades corresponding to the blades of the punch. The punch and die are adjusted so that one of the blades on one of the punch and die will not mate with the corresponding blade on the other of the punch and die, and the other blade on one of the punch and die will mate with the corresponding blade of the other of the punch and die. The punch and die are brought together to shear the workpiece between the mating, corresponding blades of the punch and die. In one embodiment the blades of the punch are fixed on the base of the punch so as to be fixed with respect to one another. In a second embodiment, the punch is divided into two parts by a sliding surface which bisects the specified angle between the blades of the punch, so that the blades of the punch are longitudinally slidable with respect to one another.

Abstract: A defect detection system is especially applicable to string type potatoes for removing the black spots and includes removing or sorting out potatoes with black spots. It includes a pair of line scanning cameras focused on opposite sides of a vertical on a common line, spaced above the conveyor belt to the height of the potato. Such opposite sight lines provide for effective sensing of leading or trailing edges of the potato. To provide for effective cutting, the cutting blade units have offset blades to allow overlap and a spacing so that areas of uncertainty created by the two cameras are eliminated. To minimize down-time of the system, the vision light, power and punch modules are separately removable. Moreover, they are located on a cantilevered base above the moving belt. This cantilevering in conjunction with pivoted supports allows for a seamless belt and easy removal of that belt.

Abstract: A machine for cutting coarse sod into relatively small plugs for ready packaging and subsequent transplanting, comprising an endless conveyor belt upon which comparatively large rectangular sections of sod can be deposited, so that the sections of sod can be moved intermittently toward a sod cutting device. The sod cutting device preferably is of the single pass cutter type, utilizing a plurality of elongate, closely grouped blades designed to periodically move in unison downwardly into contact with sod to be cut, with such downward cutting movements being immediately followed by an upward movement, thus to permit an advance of the section of sod without interference. I coordinate the movements of the sod cutting device with the belt advance, such that forward movement of a section of sod is in each instance prevented until the cutting blades are clear of the section of sod being cut.
