Abstract: The invention is directed to a die cutter monitoring system. In an exemplary embodiment the system includes a frame that supports a die. A counter plate is located opposite and aligned with the die. A substrate is placed between the counter plate and die. The counter plate forces the substrate into contact with the die. A force measuring device measures the force of the cutting stroke. The force measuring device generates an output signal. The output signal is analyzed relative to acceptable conditions and operating parameters. If the die cutter is operating outside of acceptable limits, an adjustment signal is generated and sent to the die cutter control system or operator.

  • Patent number: 6435068
Abstract: A mechanism for cutting an elongated material, such as insulated wire or fiber optic cabling. The cutting mechanism includes a stationary blade housing that includes a recessed blade receptacle. The blade receptacle receives an insert blade that is biased outward by a bias element. A cutting blade having a pair of guide legs is movable relative to the stationary blade housing and insert blade such that a cutting edge of the cutting blade interacts with a cutting edge of the insert blade to sever the elongated material. The cutting blade is received within a blade guideway formed between the blade housing and an attached guide block. The blade guideway guides the movement of the cutting blade between its retracted position and its extended position. As the cutting blade moves to the extended position, the guide legs of the cutting blade contact an outer face surface of the insert blade such that the insert blade and the cutting blade retain the desired orientation.

  • Patent number: 6408729
Abstract: Improved steel rule for use in a cutting die for cutting fixed patterns in a single or plurality of stacked material layers according to the shape of the steel rule. The improvement in the rule assists in the removal of small pieces of scrap material through the bottom of the die. The rule is undercut so that the gap between adjacent cavities is tapered. The tapered gap between adjacent cavities creates a vertical passageway that becomes wider toward the bottom of the passageway. This greatly facilitates removal of scrap material through the bottom of the die. By allowing scrap material to escape through the die, the operators are not required to stop periodically to clean the die, and the likelihood of scrap material becoming trapped in the die is minimized. Thus, the speed of the cutting operation is increased and life of the die may be prolonged.

Abstract: An optical encoder is mounted on the end of the shaft of one roller, which is in turn mounted on framework of the equipment and is driven by a film of material. A computer receives a number of impulses per roller revolution with such impulses transmitted from the optical encoder during the film's passing over the roller. Software of the computer is programed with the exact circumference of the roller before shipment and the computer calculates the amount of film that has passed over the roller and fires solenoid valves to precipitate punching operations based upon the distance traveled by the film. Upon receiving an electrical impulse from the computer control, a solenoid valve releases an intermittent burst of compressed air through a tube to a housing which contains a plastic actuator, a plunger and a spring and which has several holes drilled in it to facilitate movement of said compressed air. The burst of compressed air forces the actuator and plunger downward.

Pivotal movement of the lever translates the blade along a cutting axis to cut labeling media. The lever is automatically returned to the noncutting position by a spring, and the blade is biased toward the cutting bar by a spring incorporated in the blade mounting mechanism. The blade has a chevron shape to provide a clean cut in a short cutting stroke.

Abstract: A multi-purpose blind cut-down apparatus for cutting a blind having a head rail and closure elements. The cut-down apparatus has a blind holding plate with a blind component opening and a closure element opening for holding the head rail and closure elements in position for cutting. The cut-down apparatus uses a closure element cutting bar moveable relative to the holding plate for cutting the closure elements extending through the holding plate. The cutting bar has an die opening for receiving a cutting die on a cutting die plate. The die opening and cutting die receive the head rail of the blind and cooperate to cut the head rail by moving the cutting die plate relative to the holding plate. The cutting bar moves in a linear path while the die plate moves in an arcuate path, both the cutting bar and die plate are moved by a transmission element moveable relative to the holding plate.

Abstract: A ribbon separation tool (10) for separating optical fiber ribbons (C1,C2,C3) into subsets of optical fibers. Ribbon separation tool (10) includes a stationary shearing device (27), and a moveable shearing device (17), the moveable shearing device (17) is operative to move relative to the stationary shearing device (27) during a shearing stroke. Optical fiber ribbon support members (42), with optical fiber ribbon receiving slots (46) being defined therebetween, are adjacent shearing devices (17,27). Moveable shearing device (17) is moveably located between optical fiber ribbon support members (42) and includes moveable sub-slots (90a,90b,90c). • Patent number: 6000307
Abstract: A method of cutting is described, utilizing a specialized utility cutting tool. The tool has a fixed jaw, a movable handle, a blade, and a connecting link. The blade is inserted into a channel formed in the fixed jaw for stability, and is pivotally connected to that fixed jaw. The blade is connected to the connecting link which is connected at an opposite end to the movable handle, so that moving the movable handle toward a handle of the fixed jaw moves the blade. The connecting link provides a mechanical advantage to apply more force to an item to be cut than would be possible without the connecting link. An anvil is mounted in a channel formed in a substantially straight edge of the fixed jaw, and the sharp edge of the blade is moved toward that anvil as the handles of the fixed and movable handles are squeezed together.

Abstract: The invention provides a device for cutting open envelopes and punching filing holes into documents, and includes a body coupled to a base, the base having a two-section feeding surface along which an envelope, or other one or more documents are introduced into the device. The base is provided with a slot extending across the base, and a cutting blade having at least one cutting edge and being slidably guided in the slot, at least a portion of an edge of the slot in the base serving as stationary counter-edge to the cutting blade. At least two hole punches are slidably guided in a first section of the body; a corresponding member of cutting die holes are located in the body. A pressure-applying handle is hingedly articulated to the body for causing both the cutting blade and the hole punches to move towards the two-section feeding surface. First and second restoring springs respectively cause the cutting blade and the punches to move away from the feeding surface when the pressure-applying handle is released.
