  • Patent number: 4884218
Abstract: A knowledge system including an expert system and a complementary data base. The knowledge system is provided to answer requests, and each request has a record including a plurality of parameters and values for those parameters. The expert system is provided to process the record of a specific request to answer that request, and the complementary database stores a plurality of records of requests having known answers, and any request from a user is preprocessed by searching the complementary database for a record identical to the record of the request. If an identical record is found, the known answer to the request having that identical record is given to the user to answer his or her request; however if no identical record is found in the complementary database, the expert system is invoked to answer the request.

  • Patent number: 4878147
Abstract: In an electromagnetic coil drive device an operation coil excites an electromagnet. A switching element is turned on and off by application of a pulse signal thereto and supplies the operation coil with a power supply voltage. A voltage detecting circuit detects the power supply voltage and a gain circuit delivers a closing level signal in accordance with the voltage detected by the voltage detecting circuit. The gain circuit also delivers a holding level signal based on the detected voltage after a predetermined period of time. The level of the holding level signal is higher than that of the closing level signal. A reference wave generating circuit generates a triangular wave. A comparing circuit compares the triangular wave with the closing level signal to thereby generate a closing pulse signal having a predetermined cycle.

  • Patent number: 4875130
Abstract: An input protection structure effectively protects input circuitry from positive-going ESD pulses. The input protection structure includes a transistor having a reduced beta, connected in series with one or more diodes between the input pin and VCC. In one embodiment, the transistor having reduced beta is constructed in the same manner as a fuse device. The structure is formed in an integrated fashion, without the need for metallic interconnections within the structure itself, thereby decreasing impedance while minimizing surface area in the integrated surface.

  • Patent number: 4873606
Abstract: A safety control device for an actuator of a flap solenoid valve, such as for an automatic transmission. The device includes a current control device which is connected to a shunt resistor for measuring the current through the solenoid valve and the current control device. It also includes a control package which measures the time between the starting of the power to the solenoid valve and the moment when the current reaches a threshold intensity. The control package compares this time with a time range which indicates the proper operation of the solenoid valve so that if the time falls outside this time range, the control package instructs the current control device to cut power to the solenoid valve.

  • Patent number: 4866634
Abstract: An expert system shell efficiently computes functions of variables in response to numeric or symbolic data values input by a user. The system comprises a Knowledge Base in the form of a network of functions, an Inference Engine for efficiently updating values in the knowledge base in response to changes in entered data, and a Forms System that manages interaction with the user. A knowledge engineer creates the network of functions, and defines the user screens and the connection between screen objects and variables in the function network. The system allows many different types of variables, including numeric and symbolic types. The system associates a probability distribution with every variable, and computes the probability distributions for the dependent variables from the probability distributions for the independent variables. A variable can store multiple values as tables of probability distributions keyed by one or more key variables.

  • Patent number: 4862060
Abstract: An apparatus for measuring the concentration of one material in another, such as the concentration of water in crude or refined mineral oil, comprises a conduit for receiving and discharging a continuous flow stream of the fluid mixture and which is formed as part of a coaxial microwave transmission line. A microwave or radio frequency range signal generator in the form of an unbuffered oscillator is connected to the transmission line for generating a high frequency signal which may be varied by a voltage controlled oscillator tuning circuit. A signal receiver monitors the change in frequency caused by impedance pulling of the oscillator due to the change in fluid dielectric constant and transmits a differential frequency signal to a frequency counter and microprocessor for comparison of the measured signal with known reference signals for determining the percentage of one fluid mixed in the other in the flow stream.

  • Patent number: 4860145
Abstract: A protection circuit is provided for a tap switching line voltage regulator of the type which selectively switches in one of a predetermined number of taps on a winding of a transformer. The selective switching of the taps is controlled in response to the sensed load voltage to provide a regulated voltage to a load in the presence of a varying input line voltage. The tap switching line voltage regulator in response to the sensed load voltage controls the conductive state of a solid state series switching element in each of the switched tap lines. The protection circuit provides current limiting inductors in series with each of the solid state switching elements with all the inductors being wound on a common magnetic core. When switching from one tap to another tap, the tap switching line volage regulator in response to the sensed voltage operates to select an adjacent tap to the tap currently selected. Thus, tap switching proceeds in a sequential fashion up and down along the taps.

  • Patent number: 4855909
Abstract: A forensic sample and tracking system includes a computer system which operates a data base and a read/write station. The assignment of an identifier in the data base and an identification code to be printed on a sample bottle label are coordinated by the computer. An identification code can then be read for verification after it is written. This permits automated verifying of identification codes in a heretofore unavailable manner. The read/write station makes use of an inexpensive, reliable and compact thermal ink jet print head so that a field computer and read/write station can be taken to sample collection sites. The effective linear resolution of the identification code is enhanced using a two-track bar code.

  • Patent number: 4851954
Abstract: Apparatus for monitoring the temperature of a circuit component in a circuit arrangement wherein the circuit can be influenced via a temperature sensor when a predetermined value is exceeded for the purpose of preventing undesired high temperatures. This apparatus is improved for its use in inherently safe electronic switching circuits in that it provides the smallest possible volumetric configuration and, in addition, enables a reliable switching characteristic to be realized which is selectable within narrow temperature ranges. It is intended that the testing of its functional capability should be possible with the aid of simple means when in the built-in condition. For this purpose, a plurality of circuit components are connected in series or in parallel.
