  • Patent number: 4135387
Abstract: An apparatus and method for providing continuous phase proportion indications for a single component fluid having multiple coexisting phases. The apparatus assures homogeneity of the multiple phases by subjecting the fluid to an ultrasonic or sonic wave generator which uniformly disperses the phases among each other. The homogeneous phase mixture is exposed to a second sonic or ultrasonic wave generator with the speed of the wave originating therefrom being timed during its traversal across the mixture. Such timing enables determination of the acoustic velocity which, in addition to the wave's frequency and mixture's pressure, temperature and drop size can be correlated with the proportions of the phases in the mixture.

  • Patent number: 4135388
Abstract: A fractionating apparatus under microprocessor control including a tumbler having a series of screens of progressively larger openings around its periphery. A sample of particulate material is passed successively through each of the screens by incremental rotation of the tumbler. To aid in classifying the fractions, a spray of fluid is projected against the screens and a rocking motion is imparted to the tumbler. The smallest fraction, not being retained, is entrained in a moving stream of fluid and passed directly to a porous weighing member. When this entire fraction is deposited and weighed, the next larger fraction is accumulated in the weighing member. These individual weights and their sum are recorded and from them size percentages are computed.

  • Patent number: 4135390
Abstract: An engine output shaft is bolted to the hub of a drive plate or flex plate, the outer periphery of which is fastened to the torque converter of an automatic transmission such that the engine torque is transmitted by the drive plate from the engine to the transmission. An arcuate array of slots extending between the hub and the periphery of the drive plate define a plurality of spokes which carry the torque. The spokes bend or flex by an amount which is proportional to the torque. A pair of electromagnetic pickups are secured to the engine adjacent the inner and outer ends of the spokes respectively in order to obtain a measure of the spoke deflection and, therefore, of torque. A torque signal is electronically derived from the output of the pickups.

  • Patent number: 4135397
Abstract: A system for measuring the height of material in a storage container by generating an incident pulse with a pulse generator and transmitting the pulse through a high impedance transmission line supported in a container. A reflected pulse of opposite polarity is generated at the interface of air and material in the container and is received by a reflected pulse detector which again triggers the pulse generator to continuously monitor the height of the material in the container. The time difference between the transmitted incident pulse and the received reflected pulse of opposite polarity is the indication of the height of the material in the container. A hold off delay disables the reflected pulse detector for a finite period of time so that the reflected pulse detector is not affected by noise signals on the transmission line. If no material is in the container and no reflected pulse of opposite polarity is received, then one automatic start pulse generator retriggers the pulse generator.

Abstract: Two sets of digital tone generators are provided for a musical instrument. The members of the first set of generators create data which represent discrete amplitudes of a musical waveshape corresponding in the time domain to be true musical frequencies played by the musician. The members of the second set of generators create data which represent discrete amplitudes of a different waveshape corresponding in the time domain to frequencies which in general are note selected as true musical frequencies. Provision is made for multiplying the data created by selecting pairs of digital tone generators, one from each of the two sets. The resulting modulated data is converted into analog signals in a form suitable for a conventional sound system.

  • Patent number: 4135428
Abstract: There is disclosed a circuit for controlling the expression of an electronically controlled keyboard instrument and is an improvement on the circuit disclosed in application Ser. No. 680,996. The circuit works on the principle that by switching a solenoid on and off at a rapid rate and then varying the time on versus the time off, the energy supplied to the solenoid varies and therefore the striking force of the piano is changed. In accordance with the present invention, precise control over the width of the pulses is achieved by first setting a set voltage level and then adding thereto increments of set voltage according to a binary weighting. These voltages are then added and compared with a triangular voltage in a comparator. Both the up ramp portion and the down ramp portion of the triangular waveform are utilized and compared against the sum voltages. The pulse width of the comparator output is thus a function of the intersection of the ramp voltage, both up and down ramps, with the sum voltage.
