Abstract: A method of treating wood including providing wood having an outer layer, the outer layer including an acetylated wood cell wall; and applying a supercritical fluid mixture to the outer layer to form a treated wood, in which the supercritical fluid mixture includes a silicate precursor dissolved in a supercritical fluid, and in which the silicate precursor is attached to the acetylated wood cell wall in the treated wood is described. A glass fortified wood composition having: an acetylated wood cell wall; and a silicate precursor including a long chain alkyl group, in which the long chain alkyl group of the silicate precursor is embedded into the acetylated wood cell wall. A kit for treating wood is described including a silicate precursor; a supercritical fluid; and a catalyst capable of facilitating the formation of Si—O—Si linkages. The silicate precursor may be dissolved in the supercritical fluid.

Abstract: Sprayable liquid emulsion polymer coating compositions comprised of polymer resin and a plurality of additives for the purpose of protecting, restoring, reconditioning, rejuvenating, and enhancing the color, luster and durability of a multitude of different newer and older substrate types. These coating and sealing compositions are anti-mold, anti-graffiti, they withstand temperatures up to, and most likely in excess of, 300 degrees Fahrenheit without compromising their structural integrity, and they protect against the substrate-degrading effects of oxygen, ozone, UV-radiation, moisture and dry rot. They are also environmentally and user-friendly because they comprise minimal amounts of hazardous constituents.

Abstract: The present invention refers to a process for the preparation of an additive with a metallic hydroxide base, and especially of magnesium hydroxide, to be integrated in coatings with the purpose to give them higher flame retarding properties. The hydroxide has an average particle size that is selected from between 1 nanometer and 10 microns preferable with a wide variety, the magnesium hydroxide is submitted to a treatment of washing and diffusion, mainly so that they efficiently are dispersed in, and do not interfere with, the desired properties of the coating. The nature of the coating function is selected from the materials and the conditions of the treatment, as well as the size of the particle. The objective coating can have a base of water, solvents, oil, and alcohol. Compared with coatings formed with other flame retarding compositions, the additive of the invention presents less loss of weight by means of burning through ASTM D1360 standards.

Abstract: The present invention relates to an antimicrobial composition comprising an isothiazolin-3-one, such as 1,2-benzisothiazolin-3-one, a zinc compound selected from zinc salts, zinc oxide, zinc hydroxide or combinations thereof, a pyrithione salt or pyrithione acid, and a surfactant selected from the group consisting of (i) an anionic surfactant having a sulfate or sulfonate moiety attached to a straight or branched chain containing from about 10 to about 18 atoms at the backbone of the chain, (ii) an anionic surfactant being an alkylaryl sulfonic acid or salt thereof wherein the alkyl portion contains from about 10 to about 18 carbon atoms, and the aryl portion contains a benzyl or substituted benzyl group, and combinations thereof. This composition is particularly effective in preventing the growth of various microorganisms in mineral slurries such as aqueous calcium carbonate slurries.

Abstract: Disclosed is a wood preservative composition comprising micronized copper and copper-amine complex, wherein the copper component of the copper amine complex is from about 5% to about 50% by weight, based upon the total weight of copper in the composition. The copper amine complex serves to avoid wood surface “chalking” that is otherwise attributable to the presence of micronized copper in copper-based slurries used to treat wood products. In addition, the copper-amine complex enhances the antimicrobial efficacy of the composition when used in wood treatment applications by facilitating cell wall penetration of the treated wood.
