  • Publication number: 20120152754
Abstract: Aqueous compositions useful as pretreatments prior to painting and to reduce the formation of rust in the uncoated condition consist essentially of water, an organo-functional silane, a compound of a Group IV-B element, and optionally a polyvinyl alcohol, stabilizing agents, wetting agents, thickeners, and biocides, and have an alkaline pH>7. A process for treating a metal surface includes contacting the surface with such an aqueous composition. The compositions and processes were found to have further benefits in comparison to the zinc phosphate metal pretreatment thought to be the standard in the industry. Preferably, the pH of the compositions is alkaline, which has been found to improve the efficacy of a silane as a surface treatment to improve uniformity of paint adhesion. By operating in the alkaline pH range, it was found that flash rusting and/or blush rust were significantly reduced.

Abstract: Various embodiments of a high-performance environmentally friendly building panel and related manufacturing methods are disclosed. Certain example embodiments described herein relate to various high-performance building panel configurations that utilize at least one engineered mixture produced with a desired thickness, shape and dimension, and manufactured through several preferential manufacturing methods. To selectively enhance some of the high-performance building panel characteristics such as its ability to withstand significant loads, mitigate possible contamination by bacteria growth, as well as its ability to be fire-retardant or fire-suppressant, and other credible operating scenarios the characteristics of different engineered mixtures may be combined during the panel forming process.

Abstract: Surfaces that are in contact with a body of water or that are periodically exposed to water can be susceptible to fouling. Described herein are antifouling surfaces that contain a matrix material and an antifouling effective amount of a metal additive in the matrix material. The matrix material can define a surface that is in contact with a body of water or that is periodically exposed to water, where the matrix material does not substantially degrade in the presence of water. Methods for inhibiting fouling of a surface are also described herein.

  • Patent number: 8092584
Abstract: Disclosed is a process for making an animal blood adhesive and the resulting adhesive composition. The adhesive is made by adding to fresh, whole animal blood, without dewatering the blood, an anticoagulant and a preservative. Lime is then added to the anticoagulated, preserved blood, and the pH is adjusted to between about 9 and about 11. A curing agent (such as potassium silicate, sodium silicate and aluminum dihydrogen phosphate) and ammonia are then added to the mixture to yield the animal blood adhesive. The adhesive can be made from any animal blood, such as bovine, porcine, or avian blood. The resulting adhesive is useful for adhering wood-based products, such as plywood and particle board.

Abstract: The invention relates to a wood preservative, which wood preservative contains vegetable oils processed from crude tall oil, such as resin acids and fatty acids. The wood preservative according to the invention is characterized by that the wood preservative is crude tall oil, from which have been removed neutral components contained by the crude tall oil, especially compounds acting as the breeding ground and nutriment of rot fungi and/or compounds causing esterification reactions, such as fatty alcohols and/or steroid groups, such as sitosterol and sitostanol. The invention also relates to a method for manufacturing wood preservative according to the invention.

Abstract: An aqueous liquid solution containing soluble salts of coloring metals—particularly manganese and ferric nitrate along with a sugar source and fulvic and/or humic acid can be readily applied to rock, soil or artificial construction surfaces impart a natural color tone to such surfaces. In this manner the visibility manmade disturbances is quickly and easily reduced and disturbed areas readily blend into the natural background. The liquid solution can be readily sprayed on rock or other surfaces. When the ambient temperature is warm natural color will develop in 4-8 days.

Abstract: Compositions, methods, apparatuses, kits, and combinations are described for permanently or temporarily re-designing, decorating, and/or re-coloring a surface. The compositions useful in the present disclosure include a décor product that is formulated to be applied and affixed to a surface. If desired, the décor product may be substantially removed from the surface before being affixed thereto. If a user desires to remove the décor product, the décor product is formulated to be removed by a number of methods including, for example, vacuuming, wet extraction, chemical application, and the like. If the user desires to affix the décor product to the surface in a permanent or semi-permanent manner, the décor product may be affixed to the surface by applying energy thereto in the form of, for example, heat, pressure, emitted waves, an emitted electrical field, a magnetic field, and/or a chemical.
