  • Patent number: 6041836
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a new kind of veneer which has the cross grain (such as wavy grain and interlocked grain) artificially formed on the surface of straight-grained veneer cut by quarter sawing from a species of wood which should yield the cross grain but actually has no cross grain. Disclosed also herein is a method of producing the cross-grained veneer, said method comprising cutting wood into veneer of desired thickness which assumes the straight grain, by using a veneer peeling machine equipped with a knife whose cutting edge waves continuously in the lengthwise direction, and flattening the veneer having an uneven surface by means of thermal fixing or hot pressing, thereby artificially forming the cross grain on the surface of the straight-grained veneer. The knife is constructed such that the cutting edge waves in the widthwise direction of the knife and the troughs of the wave are disposed along the straight line extending in the lengthwise direction of the knife.

  • Patent number: 6039096
Abstract: The invention concerns a milling tool (10) with reduced noise emission for machining panel-like pieces of wood. The reduction in noise emission is brought about by reducing the vibrations produced in the tool and workpiece and by proportioning the cut, machining being carried out in two stages. The greatest part of the chip volume (first stage) is removed under favorable noise-emission conditions using a special cutting geometry. The tool and workpiece vibrations are reduced by a clearly reduced rise in the shear force pulse using a special cutting tooth geometry. The chip volume removed under these conditions is only small (second stage), and so good quality machining can be attained.

The hogger is made up of a any desired number of units that will reduce scrap to sawdust. Each unit has a pair of oscillator plates that hold a pair of semicircular blade portions at an angle to the axis of rotation, so the blade portions sweep a wide kerf. Since the blades are generally conventional saw blades, they can be sharpened by conventional machines, obviating the need for hand sharpening. Also, the relatively fine teeth on the hogger blades allows substantially uniform power loading for uniform operation.
