Bonding Of Flexible Filamentary Material While In Indefinite Length Or Running Length Patents (Class 156/166)
  • Publication number: 20090071594
Abstract: A method of inserting z-axis reinforcing fibers into a multi-layer composite laminate. Layers of material made up of z-axis fiber and y-axis fibers are automatically transported into a z-fiber deposition machine having a housing with upper and lower surfaces. Z-axis apertures are formed in the respective upper and lower surfaces. An elongated solid rod having a tapered front tip is aligned in close proximity to the aperture in the bottom surface. The rod is first rotated by a motor and then actuated upwardly completely through the thickness of the layer of x-y material by an actuator. A first hollow tube having a z-axis is axially aligned with the aperture in the top surface and a fiber bundle is threaded downwardly through a first hollow tube to a position adjacent its bottom end.

Abstract: There is provided a method of pultrusion using multiple resins. In the method a continuous interior reinforcement layer and a continuous exterior reinforcement layer are supplied and the interior reinforcement layer is infused with a first resin and then combined with the exterior reinforcement layer to form a pultrusion reinforcement structure. The pultrusion reinforcement structure passes into an infusion die where a second resin infuses the exterior reinforcement layer, and then passes into a curing die to cure the resins and form a composite article. The second resin comprises an aliphatic isocyanate polyurethane resin with a greater concentration of aliphatic isocyanate than is present in the first resin to give the composite article superior UV resistance. A pultruded composite article produced by the pultrusion method is also provided.

Abstract: An acoustical and thermally absorbent chopped strand mat formed of thermoplastic bonding materials and bundles of reinforcing fibers is provided. The reinforcing fibers are preferably wet use chopped strand glass fibers (WUCS). The thermoplastic bonding materials may be any thermoplastic or thermosetting material having a melting point less than the reinforcing fiber. The chopped strand mat may be formed by partially opening the WUCS fibers and filamentizing the thermoplastic bonding materials, blending the reinforcement and thermoplastic bonding fibers, forming the reinforcement and thermoplastic bonding fibers into a sheet, and bonding the sheet. During bonding, the sheet is heated to a temperature above the melting point of the thermoplastic bonding fibers but below the temperature of the glass fibers. The melted thermoplastic bonding fibers act as a glue to hold the glass fibers in bundles. The chopped strand mat thus formed may be used as a reinforcement material in automotive applications.

Abstract: A warp knit fabric having a plurality of stitches formed by overlaps arranged in adjacent, longitudinally extending wales with transverse underlaps connecting the overlaps of adjacent wales and with a binder material extending along the wales is used to produce a chenille yarn having a core and a pile. The pile of the chenille yarn is defined by the slit transverse underlaps and the core is defined by the overlaps of the stitches and the binder. Either before or after slitting, either the fabric or the chenille yarns is(are) heated to activate the binder. A tensile force is imposed either during or after heating.

  • Patent number: 6800164
Abstract: A composite reinforcing rod is formed by providing a reinforcing material supply of fiber strands rovings; a resin supply bath, and a puller for pulling the resin-impregnated reinforcing material through the resin bath. A hot compression (or autoclave) apparatus includes two half autoclave molds, which can be arranged in a reciprocating die autoclave or a tractor die autoclave process. A mandrel or plastics tubing core may be used to form a hollow shape of the composite materials to get an external threaded composite tubing. The two autoclave molds have an internal thread and clamp to form the threaded section in the outer of the resin-impregnated reinforcing material. The molds press and squeeze the resin out of the impregnated fibers to the mold internal surfaces, and push the outer fibers longitudinal roving fibers toward the crest of the thread of the molds so that the thread when formed is reinforced by fibers extending into the core of the rod.

  • Patent number: 6800351
Abstract: The invention relates to a folded honeycomb structure and to a method and device for producing said folded honeycomb structure from a corrugated core web. The folded honeycomb structure has a number of adjacent corrugated core strips which lie in one plane and are interconnected by cover layer strips. Said cover layer strips are folded about 180° and are perpendicular to said plane. According to the inventive method for producing the folded honeycomb structure, interconnected corrugated core strips are produced first by making a number of longitudinal scores in a corrugated core web. These corrugated core strips are then alternately rotated through 90° respectively so that the cover layer strips fold and the folded honeycomb structure is formed. The device corresponding to this method consists of a number of rotating blades for making the longitudinal scores and a number of guiding elements for rotating the interconnecting corrugated core strips.

Abstract: In a process for the manufacture of an optical transmission element with several optical waveguides and with a slot element each surrounding the optical waveguides, a filling compound is applied intermittently to the optical waveguides in a liquid state. The optical waveguides are subsequently fed into an extruder, where the extruder forms a slot element around the optical waveguides. The filling compound expands only within the formed slot element, so that interstices present in the cross-section level of the transmission element are penetrated and several dry, compressible filling elements are formed, which each surround the respective optical waveguides. With the process according to the invention, the cross-section of the extruded slot element is not compromised during the manufacturing process.

  • Patent number: 6763869
Abstract: In a pultrusion device for producing continuous length sections prepared from thermoplastic resins reinforced with long fibers, the vertical angle (&agr;) of an upstream conical surface of a conical portion, which constitutes a shaping nozzle perforated through the downstream end wall of the device ranges from 15 to 35 degrees and the shaping nozzle has a land portion having a length of 1 to 5 mm in the downstream area subsequent to the upstream conical surface. According to this pultrusion device for producing continuous length sections prepared from thermoplastic resins reinforced with long fibers, the long fibers never undergo any breakage nor fluffing during the opening treatment and this accordingly leads to the substantial reduction of pill-formation.

  • Patent number: 6740185
Abstract: The present invention provides for a method of manufacturing a preform for a RTM molding process that will increase both the handling capability of the preform and the final part quality. The invention consists of applying a patterned discontinuous layer of liquid resin over at least one side of a layer of reinforcing fibers. The resin film can consist of a homogeneous liquid, an aqueous dispersion or a melted resin applied at an elevated temperature. In one embodiment, there is present a roller having a patterned surface. Liquid resin is applied to the surface of the patterned roller via a second roller. The layer of reinforcing fibers is passed by the roller in such a fashion that the resin from the pattern on the surface of the roller is transferred to the layer of reinforcing fibers. The contact of the roller with the layer of reinforcing fibers is sufficient to force some of the resin into the fibers themselves.
