  • Patent number: 10434724
Abstract: A method for creating a termination by attaching some kind of fitting to the end of a tensile member such as a cable. The end fitting is provided with an internal cavity. The cavity has a proximal portion that is adjacent the area where the tensile member exits the fitting and a distal portion on its opposite end. A length of the tensile member's filaments is placed within this expanding cavity and infused with liquid potting compound. The method exploits the characteristic of a liquid potting compound as it transitions to a solid. The potting compound in one portion of the cavity is typically transitioned to a solid at a more rapid rate than other portions. Once the potting compound in one portion of the cavity has transitioned sufficiently to hold the filaments at the desired level, tension is placed on the tensile member and a small linear displacement may be imposed on the tensile member.

  • Patent number: 10113296
Abstract: An assembly and method for using a flexible tensile member as part of the rigging for a dragline bucket. The tensile member includes a stranded core surrounded by a separate armor layer. The armor layer assumes the form of a hollow cylinder having a substantial wall thickness. A significant gap is provided between the outward-facing surface of the stranded core and the inward-facing surface of the armor layer. This gap minimizes wear between the two elements during the normal bending and flexing of the tensile member. A first anchor is attached to a first end of the stranded core and a second anchor is attached to a second end of the stranded core. These anchors serve to transmit tension carried by the stranded core. A first end of the armor layer is also attached to the first anchor and a second end of the armor layer is attached to the second anchor.

  • Patent number: 5475186
Abstract: An end fitting with stress distribution for supporting an end of a device, such as an insulator, placed tension. The end fitting has a mounting hole for receiving a cylindrical mounting pin therethrough. The mounting hole has a pair of contacting points spaced laterally relative to the vector line of force to redirect the tensile load applied to the end fitting by a mounting pin located in the mounting hole. The end fitting is especially useful in insulators subjected to tensile loads.

  • Patent number: 5406033
Abstract: A composite link and insulator, and method of construction, includes a fiberglass body. The body is formed by coating glass fibers with a liquid resin and winding the fibers around a plurality of tubular fittings or bushings in two layers, a first extending longitudinally of the body and the second transversely and around the first. A polymer shield layer and weathersheds are injection molded over the fiberglass body to create an insulator. The insulator may also be provided with stiffening plastic inserts at either end for increasing strength without adding significantly to the insulator's overall weight.

  • Patent number: 5374789
Abstract: An electrical assembly, such as an insulator or a surge arrester, having an elastomeric weathershed housing, a pair of end fittings, and a pair of sealing systems for coupling and sealing the interfaces between the end fittings and the ends of the weathershed housing. Each of the end fittings has a bore for receiving an end portion of the weathershed housing, and an annular flange extending inwardly from the bore for engaging and compressing the end portion of the weathershed housing inwardly to form a primary annular seal without crimping the end fitting against the weathershed housing. At least one locking ring is positioned between the end portion of the weathershed housing and the inner surface of the bore for forming a secondary annular seal. Additional sealing can also be provided by axially compressing the weathershed housing between the end fittings.

  • Patent number: 5336852
Abstract: An electrical assembly, such as an insulator or a surge arrester, utilizing a pair of end collars for coupling an elastomeric weathershed housing to a pair of metallic end fittings, and for reducing electrical stress at the interface of the ends of the weathershed housing and the end fittings, and for sealing the ends of the weathershed housing to the end fittings. In particular, a radially directed force is applied to the weathershed housing by insertion of the core member into the axial bore of the weathershed housing causing radial outward expansion of the weathershed housing into intimate contact with the end collars. Also, each of the ends of the weathershed housing is held in contact against the inner end of the respective end fitting to seal the interface therebetween. Accordingly, a watertight seal is created at the interface between each of the end fittings and the ends of the weathershed housings.

  • Patent number: 5241231
Abstract: In large electric machines, the electrical connection between the exciter supply lead (7, 8), which extends axially in the center of the rotor, and the exciter winding conductors (4) in the winding overhang (3) of the rotor is highly stressed electrically and mechanically. If use is made of an elastic exciter terminal stud (13) made from steel, and the connecting conductors (17, 18) are supported between the exciter terminal stud (13) and the conductors (4) of the rotor winding overhang on the rotor cap, preferably on its cap plate (6), excessive stresses occur neither on the shaft (2) nor on the connecting conductors (17, 18). It is preferable in this arrangement to make use of a terminal stud (13) that is slotted in the longitudinal direction of the stud and has at least three slots. Such a stud is elastic transversely to its longitudinal direction and can be purposively cooled.
