Abstract: A circumferential seal system for sealing a high pressure region from a low pressure region separated by a runner with an outer circumferential surface and a seal ring disposed about the outer circumferential surface is described. The seal system includes a plurality of groove sets separately disposed along the outer circumferential surface. Each groove set further includes at least two grooves. At least one groove within each groove set exerts a lifting force via a fluid from the high pressure region onto the seal ring as the runner translates with respect to the seal ring along an axis substantially perpendicular to the rotation of the runner. The continuous feed of fluid onto the seal ring ensures a thin film between the seal ring and the runner regardless of their relative arrangement during axial excursions of the runner resulting from conditions within a turbine engine.

  • Patent number: 7992694
Abstract: A method and a sealing system for sealing the space between a piston and the hub of a torque converter lockup clutch is provided. According to the method and the sealing system, the seal is pretensioned with its cylindrical surface facing the piston bore. In an embodiment of the invention, the first seal is fastened by a second seal. The invention allows minimization of oil leakage flow and at the same time to linearize its dependency on the differential pressure. Spontaneous sealing may be reduced, thereby directly correlating the contact pressure of the piston—and thus the torque of the torque converter lockup clutch—with differential pressure and eventually allowing for smoother travel.

Pumping grooves and labyrinth grooves are provided axially outwardly of the accommodating section for preventing the Ga or Ga alloy from leaking.

  • Patent number: 6254732
Abstract: A sealing construction for loading a seal against a suction roll in a paper machine includes a seal having a wear surface, side surfaces and a lower surface. The seal is fitted from its holder to the structure of a suction box which is inside the suction roll. The seal essentially covers the whole operating length of the suction roll, extending from its wear surface to the inner face of the mantle of the suction roll. The seal is moveable in the direction of the radius of the suction roll in the holder by a pressure effect that is applied directly onto the lower surface of the seal. Negative pressure or vacuum can be applied during operation to draw the seal into its holder to reduce seal wear.

  • Patent number: 6187146
Abstract: A mounting system for removably mounting a sensor array adjacent the wire of a papermaking machine. The mounting system comprises an elongate base member formed with a tongue or groove with a corresponding interlocking groove or tongue formed on the sensor array adapted to be slidably received and retained by the elongate base member. The tongue and groove are dimensioned to permit relative movement of the sensor array with respect to the base member. An inflatable bladder is housed between the elongate base member and the sensor array and the bladder is adapted to be inflated to move the tongue and groove into a locked position to fix the position of the sensor array with respect to the elongate base member. This arrangement allows for easy and efficient removal of the sensor array when the bladder is unpressurized while providing reliable clamping when the bladder is inflated.

  • Patent number: 6161834
Abstract: A seal is provided for an offshore fluid swivel to seal a gap passage (34) leading from a transfer chamber (20) to the environment, which uses pressured fluid to apply a variable pressure that pushes the seal tightly against a sealed surface (52) on one side of the gap passage. In one arrangement, a ring-shaped seal device includes a seal body (82) of largely U-shaped cross-section, with a base (84) and a pair of legs (86, 88) extending from opposite sides of the base, with the base and at least one leg sealing against walls of the cavity that holds the seal. A hose (90) lies between the two legs and against the base of the seal body, and pressured fluid of greater than chamber fluid pressure is applied to the hose to expand it and thereby push apart the legs of the seal body.

  • Patent number: 6108892
Abstract: A seal member to be fitted on a shaft portion of a rotor is engaged with the front end of a center piece to be fixed on the front end of an automatic machine such as a robot or the like. A slide portion is moved so that the seal member is fixed by a chuck claw. While compressed air is jetted from an air passage of the center piece, the seal member is fitted on the shaft portion. The air passage consists of cylindrical holes and can be easily formed by a hole-forming machine or lathe.

  • Patent number: 5975532
Abstract: A seal construction for a suction roll in a paper machine including a substantially U-section holder open toward an inner face of the roll mantle and a seal mounted in the holder and extending in the axial direction of the roll. The seal includes a frame part arranged within the holder and a wear part fixed to the frame part and placed against the inner face of the roll mantle. The seal construction also includes a loading hose for shifting the seal in the holder against the inner face of the roll mantle. In the interior of the frame part of the seal, an inner loading member is arranged to lock the frame part of the seal in contact with the holder so as to position the wear part of the seal in the desired position in relation to the inner face of the roll mantle.

  • Patent number: 5791655
Abstract: A dynamic oil control mechanism for a press including a vacuum inducing ejector or jet-pump to vacuum oil leaking from about an oil seal. The oil seal is located around the drive piston on the press slide to prevent oil migration from the press crown to the die area or slide of the press. A drain port is located about the housing in which the drive piston reciprocates. The ejector maintains a low pressure area within the drain port to pull oil leaking from the seal into the drain port and away from the drive piston. The vacuumed oil is then transferred to an oil reservoir.
