Abstract: The present invention is a system that manages a volumetric display using volume windows. The volume windows have the typical functions, such as minimize, resize, etc., which operate in a volume. When initiated by an application a volume window is assigned to the application in a volume window data structure. Application data produced by the application is assigned to the windows responsive to which applications are assigned to which windows in the volume window data structure. Input events are assigned to the windows responsive to whether they are spatial or non-spatial. Spatial events are assigned to the window surrounding the event or cursor where a policy resolves situations where more than one window surrounds the cursor. Non-spatial events are assigned to the active or working window.

Abstract: A data reading method used in a reading device for reading a holographic storage medium is provided. The holographic storage medium has several data areas. Each data area has several data pages, and each data page forms a data image that has at least one reserved block pattern on the reading device. The reserved block pattern of the data image corresponding to a first data page is searched within a first searching region to obtain a first pattern position. The reserved block pattern of the data image corresponding to a second data page is searched within a second searching region to obtain a second pattern position. A third searching position is then determined according to the first and second pattern positions. The reserved block pattern of the data image corresponding to a third data page is searched within a third searching region whose center is at the third searching position.

The rotation of the enclosure is sampled with an encoder and the display is virtually rotated by a computer maintaining the scene by an amount corresponding to the physical rotation before being rendered. This allows the user to remain in one position while viewing different parts of the displayed scene corresponding to different viewpoints. The display contents can be rotated in direct correspondence with the display enclosure or with a gain (positive or negative) that accelerates the rotation of the contents with respect to the physical rotation of the enclosure. Any display widgets in the scene, such as a virtual keyboard, can be maintained stationary with respect to the user while scene contents rotate by applying a negative rotational gain to the widgets.

Disclosed structures made by the method(s) include a mesa structure with a top plate and four sidewall plates, each facing a reflective plate, as well as closed structures such as cubes and rectilinear boxes into which separate plates may be disposed. A mold for preferentially making the substrate such as by injection molding is also detailed.

Abstract: Systems and methods for recovering data in a holographic memory system. The systems and methods use homodyne detection to introduce a local oscillator beam into a reconstructed data beam of the recovered hologram. An image of the combined beam comprising the reconstructed data beam and local oscillator beam may be processed to obtain contrast level information for the pixels of the detected image. This contrast level information may then be used to obtain an increased contrast image of the recovered hologram, which may increase the SNR of the recovered data.

  • Patent number: 7616362
Abstract: A hologram recording and reproducing apparatus includes a movable galvanomirror, a mirror controller and a reproduction unit. The galvanomirror guides a reference beam toward a hologram recording medium and changes the incident angle of the reference beam. The mirror controller causes the galvanomirror to move for adjusting the incident angle to a predetermined angle for hologram recording. In reproducing the recorded information, the mirror controller causes the galvanomirror to move, so that the incident angle continuously changes within a predetermined range including the predetermined angle. The reproduction unit receives a detection signal from an optical detector while the incident angle changes continuously. The detection signal corresponds to the intensity of a reflected beam from the hologram recording medium. The reproduction unit reproduces the recorded information, based on the detection signal, when the intensity of the reflected beam is over a predetermined level or reaches the maximum.

Abstract: A pointing system uses a hologram or a lenticular image that may be affixed to a pointing device such as a game controller. The hologram may comprise a holographic image and may display a pattern that changes rapidly and predictably as the position of the pointing device changes. The hologram may be a reflection hologram or a transmission hologram. A light sensing device not on the controller captures the movement and appearance of the hologram and provides information to a computing device. The computing device processes the appearance information to determine an orientation of the pointing device, and based on the orientation, changes the position of a cursor on a display.
