Patent number: 8186903Abstract: The invention is related to a fastener assembly of the kind used to secure a gas turbine engine rotor disc assembly on a shaft in a situation which otherwise would required the use of a trapped nut. It thereby removes a design constraint limiting bore diameter of the disc assembly to permit access to a securing nut on the shaft, and avoids the use of a trapped nut. One of the rotors hubs is adapted to be mounted on the shaft and the securing nut is engaged with a thread on the shaft to trap the hub. In the improvement of the invention the hub is provided with an axial keyway through which the securing nut is passed into the limited access space. Once the shaft is engaged with the hub the nut is then engaged with the thread on the shaft and tightened using a special tool extending through the centre of the shaft. The tool is withdrawn after use. The nut may be undone and retrieved in an opposite operation.Type: GrantFiled: November 14, 2008Date of Patent: May 29, 2012Assignee: Rolls-Royce PLCInventors: Ian Makin, Michael C Roberts

The maximum inner diameter of the through hole is made larger than the outer diameter of a shaft section of the screw. Three ribs, which protrude toward the center of the through hole to contact the shaft section of the screw, are integrally formed with the plastic frame on an inner surface of the through hole. A far end shape of the ribs is formed in a shape along an outer surface of a virtual cylinder whose diameter equals the outer diameter of the shaft section of the screw and whose center axis matches the center axis of the screw.Type: GrantFiled: December 17, 2001Date of Patent: August 31, 2004Assignee: NEC CorporationInventors: Nobuhiro Tamura, Kazuhiko Asahina

Patent number: 6779942Abstract: A control shaft and knob assembly includes a control knob having a slot defined therein. The assembly also includes a control shaft which (i) has a bore extending therethrough, (ii) includes a spring arm which is positionable within the slot of the control knob, and (iii) has an opening defined therein. The assembly further includes a locking pin having a first retention member secured thereto. The locking pin is positionable in the bore of the control shaft. When the locking pin is positioned in the bore of the control shaft (i) the locking pin is positioned to inhibit inward deflection of the spring arm, and (ii) the first retention member is received into the opening of the control shaft. A method of securing a control knob to a control shaft of an appliance timer is also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: January 12, 2001Date of Patent: August 24, 2004Assignee: Emerson Electric CompanyInventors: Ellis P. Publication number: 20040037615Abstract: A clamp apparatus is provided which is designed to structurally replace a weld that attaches a riser brace assembly to a reactor vessel wall, and to stiffen the entire riser brace assembly, thereby increasing the natural vibration frequency of the riser brace assembly. Installation of the clamp apparatus should not require removal of any installed reactor hardware, such as jet pump assembly hardware or shroud repair hardware. In an embodiment, the clamp apparatus may include a first plate arranged so as to mate with a first groove on the riser brace, and a second plate arranged so as to mate with a second groove on the riser brace. The grooves provide alignment for the clamp apparatus, so that the first and second plates can be fixedly secured to the riser brace.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 21, 2002Publication date: February 26, 2004Inventor: Grant C. Patent number: 6695520Abstract: A device for inserting, extracting, and locking a module into, from, and in a rack. The device includes two arms which can pivot with respect to the module and which are articulated together by a common articulation, each of them including, on the one hand, at one end, an anchor for anchoring it into the rack and, on the other hand, a non-common articulation with the module. A device immobilizes one of the arms with respect to the other when the arms are anchored in the rack. Further, associated with at least one of the arms, an elastic device works in compression between the module and the arm when its end is anchored into the rack. Such a device may find particular application in electronics modules for avionics.Type: GrantFiled: December 12, 2000Date of Patent: February 24, 2004Assignee: Thomson-CSF SextantInventors: Claude Sarno, Henri Bouteille

Patent number: 6688827Abstract: A protective device for an aciculate object includes a body, a capture, and a protective cap. The body is a geometric shape with two ends. The body has a longest side of length L1. The body is resistant to deformation along an axis parallel to the longest side of the body. The capture is formed into the body at one end. The protective device is pushed over a pointy or pointed end of the aciculate object positively engaging the capture of the protective device. The capture retains the aciculate object and resists movement of the aciculate object coaxially off the aciculate object and in a direction normal to an axis parallel to the longest side of the body. The protective cap is mounted to the end of the body opposite the capture. The protective cap has a diameter L2, such that L2 is less than L1. The protective cap is resistant to penetration from the pointy or pointed of the aciculate object.Type: GrantFiled: August 26, 2002Date of Patent: February 10, 2004Inventor: Ronald Gelb

Patent number: 6685570Abstract: An improved plate adapter for use with flexible couplings is disclosed which incorporates radially outwardly disposed pilot flanges for engagement with the hub and sleeve of the half coupling which pilot flanges are designed to form a pressfit relationship with the mating surfaces of the hub and sleeve. A suitable bolting arrangement is provided to aid in fitting of the adapter plate to the half coupling as well as to assist in removal of same. Additionally, the fastener arrangement enables fine adjustment of the radial runout of the sleeve of the half coupling relative to the axis of rotation of the shaft to which the half coupling is secured.Type: GrantFiled: January 22, 2002Date of Patent: February 3, 2004Assignee: Kop-FlexInventors: Jossef Zilberman, Joseph P. Publication number: 20030103799Abstract: A system for the secure physical attachment of a second device to a first device is disclosed comprising a first and second inter-connection attachment means in physical association with each device. The second inter-connection attachment means physically mates with its corresponding first inter-connection attachment means. Additionally, means for detecting the physical mating of each of the first and second inter-connection attachment means is provided. The detecting means is preferably associated with at least one of the devices and in communication with each of it's associated device's inter-connection attachment means. Means are provided for determining that the first and second inter-connection attachment means have been securely mated and, if not, means are provided for indicating the status of the completion of the secure attachment there between.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 9, 2001Publication date: June 5, 2003Applicant: Xerox CorporationInventors: Debora Margaret Hejza Litwiller, Philip E.
