  • Patent number: 5348210
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of making what may for convenience be regarded as friction joints--that is to say, joints between the touching surfaces of two parts that are held in contact (by a force as experienced in a light interference, not one sufficient to cause forging) and that would otherwise move laterally past one another parallel to the touching plane, the method involving some minimal initial lateral movement of the two surfaces sufficient to cause some asperity deformation, leading to welding and shearing under special conditions--the phenomenon of "galling"--but not sufficient to raise the bulk temperature of either to a level where bulk welding will occur.

  • Patent number: 5339940
Abstract: A piece of movable equipment is provided with a male docking bar (10) . An immovable piece of equipment is mounted to an immovable fixture which has a female docking bar (28). The female docking bar (28) has freedom to move in a first axis. The movable piece of equipment is brought into contact along a second, orthogonal axis to meet the immovable piece of equipment, at which point lugs (12) on the male docking bar mate with corresponding holes (30) on the female docking bar. The male locking bar can then be interlocked (16, 32) to the female docking bar. The movable piece of equipment can then further be moved along the first axis.

  • Patent number: 5333963
Abstract: The invention relates to a coupling for fixedly, i.e. non-flexibly, connect free ends of two shaft together. The connection is releasable. A typical field of application is in pumps. The coupling has one generally cylindric, solid muff adapted to be fixedly secured to one shaft. The other muff is split in two, along a plane parallel with the axis of the respective shaft. All parts are made free of play when they are secured to the shafts. The invention facilitates maintenance work, e.g. in replacement of packing rings in a pump. It also facilitates the manufacture of the coupling.

  • Patent number: 5312139
Abstract: A detachable locking device is described which consists of a pair of standard box end wrenches with shortened handles having integral ears on the ends of the handles with openings therethrough. The wrenches are designed to be retrofittably placed behind the respective connecting nuts on the line termination point adapter assemblies which are to be joined. The preliminary connection and seal are made using conventional means and the connecting nuts are torqued to near their optimum value. The wrench heads of the locking device are then positioned on the nuts so that a connecting bolt can be passed through the openings in the ears on the handles, a nut attached thereto and then tightened to hold and secure the connecting nuts together and prevent the nuts from loosening or seal leaking during the operation of the fluid transmission line.

A plurality of flanges are integrally connected to and extend substantially perpendicular to the peripheral wall toward the axis of rotation. At least one screen is connected to the flanges by rigid but malleable tabs formed thereon that are bent around a peripheral strand of the screen. • Patent number: 4778303
Abstract: A quick change gear apparatus provides a system which shortens time of spindle machine gear changes to approximately ten percent of that previously required for gear change operations. In a preferred form, the apparatus includes a cylindrical spacer juxtaposed against a face of a gear which is secured between the spacer and a shoulder on a gear shaft. A split washer is also employed to permit the quick change operation by virtue of the loosening of a cap screw secured in a free end of the gear shaft. The cap screw contains a head which retains the split washer and assures that the split washer is urged axially against the spacer and gear members on the shaft. A partial turn of the cap screw will enable radial removal of the split washer, to thereby permit subsequent axial removals of the spacer and gear.

  • Patent number: 4764048
Abstract: A lightweight ball-and-socket joint that is for instance capable of being assembled by a robot. The ball-and-socket joint has a ball head, a CIRCLIP and an outer structural part forming a socket, in which there is a circumferential groove the bottom of which forms a support face for the circlip. The support face is substantially defined by a hollow cone and surrounds the CIRCLIP like a jacket, and a flare angle of the support face opens toward the center of the ball head. The CIRCLIP presses with radial bias against the support face and therefore migrates in the direction of its largest diameter and hence toward the center of the ball head until it rests thereon.

  • Patent number: 4685871
Abstract: The pinion gear of a gear pump is press fit onto the end portion of the drive shaft of the pump and is positively captivated on the shaft by a key and by a hot upsetting process, the latter resulting in the formation of axially protruding burrs on the end face of the shaft. When the drive shaft is rammed forwardly with significant force, the burrs tend to embed in an end plate disposed in opposing relation with the shaft. To prevent the burrs from embedding in the end plate and locking the shaft against rotation, the end plate is formed with a recess which receives the burrs with substantial axial clearance when the shaft is rammed forwardly against the end plate.

Abstract: A fuel transfer system for transferring fuel assemblies through a transfer tube between fuel exchange locations respectively in a fuel storage and handling building and a containment structure of a nuclear reactor includes a segmented track comprising first, second and third track segments and a segmented drive screw comprising first, second and third drive screw segments respectively associated with the fuel storage and handling building, the transfer tube, and the containment structure. Gaps between the successive, corresponding track segments and drive screw segments permit operation of valves for closing the ends of the transfer tube during normal operation of the reactor, which valves are then opened during fuel exchange operations. The adjacent but normally displaced ends of the first and second and of the second and third drive screw segments include respective, mating engagement means.

  • Patent number: 4639026
Abstract: The arrangement comprises a standard, door knob-operated, latch mechanism in which the cylindrical shank of the door knob is slidably engaged with the rotatable spindle of the mechanism, and the spindle has a spring-biased catch projecting therethrough which passes into a slot formed in the cylindrical shank of the knob. In this way, the knob is secured on the shank. The improvement comprises forming a ramp in a cut-out on the terminal or outermost end of of the cylindrical shank, and forming a complimentary bevel on a corner of the projecting catch. Accordingly, when the knob is slidably forced onto its spindle, during manufacturing assembly, the ramp formed in the cut-out engages the bevel and, consequently, depresses the catch to allow the cylindrical shank to slide thereupon and thereover, and to allow the catch latchingly to engage the slot.

Abstract: Fan drive mechanism includes a fan plate rotatably mounted on a spindle by bearings having an outer race secured to the fan plate, an inner race mounted on the spindle, and ball bearings rotatably supporting the outer race on the inner race. A stop nut threaded on the spindle has a forward face engaging the inner race and a radially outwardly tapering conical surface tapering from the forward face. The conical surface catches the fan plate upon failure of the bearings and separation of the outer race from the inner race and controls the wobble of the fan plate while stopping its rotation, thereby preventing the fan plate from separating from the spindle.

Abstract: A control lever for an automobile which is used to replace original equipment levers without requiring the removal of the dashboard. A preferred embodiment of the present invention includes a fork-shaped insert member slidable within a lever body, the insert having a pair of tines which are passed through a slot in the dashboard to engage a rotor plate behind the dashboard. By passing a screw through the lever body and threading it into the insert member from the front of the dashboard, the lever body and insert members are drawn together to clamp onto the rotor plate, securing the lever in place. Lateral movement of the lever within the slot will rotate the rotor plate, in order to select a desired function. Also disclosed is a method of replacing a climate control lever without removing the dashboard.
