  • Patent number: 4622822
Abstract: In heating and cooling assemblages, that use a thermoelectric module of the Peltier type held tightly between heating and cooling members, an improvement, for avoiding fracture of the frangible components of the Peltier type thermoelectric module, is provided by using a clamping means, that acts against the members clamped against the thermoelectric module, that employs spring means that exert the assembly pressure against the thermoelectric module's substrates. The spring means desirably apply force in line with the central portion of the module's substrates, where the hottest portion of the module's substrate is located. The spring means employ one or more elongated leaf springs whose center is offset from the ends of the springs that are engaged by selectively actuatable clamping means. In one specific form a cooling box for use in the field is equipped with assemblages, as disclosed, provided at the corners of the box.

  • Patent number: 4619807
Abstract: A heat shield for high thermal loading and particularly pulse heat loading n fusion reactors e.g. as first wall, plasma physics installations, particle accelerators, etc. contains a cooled support plate carrying a large number of shielding or limiter members on its side facing a heat source, e.g. a hot plasma. The shielding or limiter members are detachably connected to the support plate by a good thermally conducting seat, e.g. a bevel, ball or flat seat. By suitably shaping and arranging the limiter members, it is possible to substantially cover the surfaces of practically any desired shape such as, e.g., the inner wall of a toroidal vacuum vessel. As a result of their limited size, the limiter members can be adapted in a optimum manner to locally differing requirements. The size and shape of the support member can be adapted to widely differing boundary conditions.

Abstract: Residual favorable stresses are induced in a zone of stress concentration in a coupling and connection joint mechanism of a drill collar or drilling tool, for example. The residual favorable stress is created by tensily stressing the material within elastic limits, relieving the stress in the zone by heating the material therein into a nonstressed plastic or liquid state, and releasing the tensile stress maintained in an area adjacent the zone. The residual force of elasticity in the area adjacent the zone applies the favorable residual stress in the zone. Preferably, the favorable residual stress is a compressive stress to resist fatigue failures from tension-induced cracks. The extent and depth of penetration of the favorable residual stress in the zone is controlled and is substantially greater than that available from mechanical cold-working surface-hardening techniques.

  • Patent number: 4335972
Abstract: An apparatus including a first part, a second part, a plurality of spaced apertures in the first part and a plurality of holding devices for holding the first part against the second part. The plurality of apertures are each selectively sized so a first of the apertures forms a close clearance fit with one of the holding devices on at least one diameter of the first aperture. A second of the apertures forms an equally close clearance fit, on one of its diameters, with a second of the holding devices, but forms a looser clearance fit with the second holding device on a second diameter thereof, which generally parallels a line between the first and second apertures. The remainder of the plurality of apertures each form a substantially looser fit with an associated holding device than is formed by either of said close clearance fits.

  • Patent number: 4231670
Abstract: A wheel assembly adaptable for use with a motor vehicle, a light aircraft, and the like, or in a pulley system or gear train. The wheel assembly comprises an axle or spindle-retained hub member, and a removable wheel member that is releasably connected by unique snap/lock pins. The hub member is made of a more dense material than the material of which the wheel member is made. In the adaption for use with a motor vehicle, light aircraft, and the like, the wheel member (with a tire mounted on it) is significantly lighter than the conventional rim-mounted tire, because of the absence of the hub portion; and, therefore, the wheel member can be easily changed or removed by even the weak, the aged, and the handicapped. Additionally, because the customary bolt/nut or lug/lug nut fastening combinations are not used, the wheel member is easy to change or remove, and, as importantly, the need for a "lug wrench" is eliminated.
