Abstract: Context based menus that can be dynamically positioned, laid out, and activated are provided for tap, swipe, and press-and-hold type interactions. Presenting a plurality of executable commands and/or links to submenus, a context based menu may be displayed in various shapes and forms in relation to selected content displayed on a user interface and/or other factors such as available display space, user attributes, and similar ones. Submenus presenting commands within a category may be displayed in place of, adjacent to, or overlapping with a parent context based menu. Menu position, contents, and/or shape may be adjusted in response to changes in selected content, user contact location, changes in user interface, and the like.

Abstract: One or more submenus associated with context based menus are provided. A context based menu may include top level commands/items available for execution on selected content or activation of submenu(s) that include additional executable commands. Additional commands may be executed through the submenu(s) by tap, swipe, or press and hold actions. Upon selection of a termination item or execution of a command, a submenu may be hidden and/or a parent menu displayed.

Different actions and combinations of actions enable users to activate sub-menus, execute commands, or collapse context based menus. Gestures associated with the actions are determined through action analysis. The action analysis includes tap action hit target region analysis and swipe action direction, angle, and/or length analysis.

Upon initiation of a predetermined user action, such as a right-click operation, a primary menu is displayed and a second radial menu is displayed proximate the primary menu with the cursor position at a predetermined location for minimizing cursor manipulation for selecting a menu item from the second radial menu.

Abstract: A system and method are provided that enhances a user's experience when using a see-through near eye display device. A user interface is provided for a user to manage single or simultaneous applications in a head mounted device. Applications for the head mounted device may be activated or deactivated by the user via the user-interface. The user's total field of view (TFOV) which accounts for a complete range of rotation and translation of the user's head may be determined by tracking the user's head position and rotation relative to the user's body and an environment associated with the user. One region of the user's TFOV (e.g., the right-hand side) may display an “application menu” including a list of applications that can be launched, and another region of the user's TFOV (e.g., the left-hand side) may display an “active menu” including a list of applications currently running.

The aggregated website will periodically check a source website and update the content displayed on the aggregated site if the source website has been updated. The application generating the source website determines which subsection of the updated website corresponds with the subsection originally selected for display by comparing the document object model (“DOM”) for both the updated web page and the original version of the web page at the time the subsection selection was made by the user. Condensed DOM trees may be generated for the updated web page and the original version of the web page, prior to comparing the two DOM trees.

Abstract: In a system and method for navigating content, a first selection of an aggregated content category is received from a plurality of aggregated content categories provided in a first portion of a user interface for an application for browsing and viewing media content. A second portion of the user interface is populated with media content items categorized in the selected aggregated content category. A second selection of a media content item of the media content items categorized in the selected aggregated category is received. The media content items are shifted to the first portion of the user interface, and the second portion of the user interface is populated with user interface panels relating to aspects of the selected media content item. A third selection of an indicator to view the aspects of the selected media content item is received. The user interface is regenerated to cause the display of only the user interface panels.

Abstract: A method and system for providing context dependent pop-up menu icons that activate menu icons in response to a select & drag operation by manipulation of a pointing device. Presented icons may correspond to functions or actions that can be implemented with the particular type of content selected. Icons may be displayed in a consistent manner in terms of position and content with respect to the selected file or object. Icons may appear only during a select & drag operation, thereby leaving the display uncluttered at other times. Presentation of icons may be discontinued when the selected file or object is dragged beyond the area of the presented icons. New applications can register with the operating system to specify icons to be presented when corresponding files are selected or when particular content objects are selected within the application.

Abstract: Computer-implemented systems and methods are disclosed for displaying a number of data items within a graphical user interface. Data items retrieved from a data store (e.g., a database) may be assigned, based on a first predetermined criterion, to first level bins. A first level bin identifier is associated with each first level bin. One or more first level bin identifiers are displayed in a list within a graphical user interface. Upon user operation on a displayed first level bin identifier associated with a particular first level bin, data items contained in the particular first level bin are displayed in the list.

Abstract: A system and method for organizing viewing and reading of electronic periodicals on electronic devices, particularly mobile devices. The user's periodicals are arranged on the device's User Interface (UI) in visual representations of stacks. Each stack represents a different one of the user's periodicals. As a user selects a particular stack representing a particular ePeriodical, the stack is animated to spread out in drawer or in a grid to display thumbnails representing the covers of individual issue of the ePeriodical. The user can scroll the drawer or grid to view the issues. If the user has ePeriodicals stored on remote servers, the user interface has a control that the user can activate to download the thumbnail covers of the remotely stored ePeriodicals. Once the user has found the desired ePeriodical to read, the cover thumbnail can be selected to open and display the ePeriodical.

Abstract: Interactive program guide systems and related processes are provided which can automatically tune a television, or program a VCR, based on program selections made from program schedule information displayed on a television or other suitable video monitor. The interactive program guide is preferably implemented using a microprocessor-controlled set-top box that is coupled to the viewer's television set. The set-top box receives program schedule information and software from a headend telecasting center. Preferably, program schedule information for the current day and at least six subsequent days is stored in a memory within the set-top box. The interactive program guide provides a display mode for allowing the viewer to apply a restrictive search selection criterion and a nonrestrictive sort attribute to the program schedule information.

The apparatus may display one of the multi-character user input controls in a display region and other user input controls outside of the display region. If the multi-character user input control is selected, the apparatus may replace the multi-character user input control with a second set of single character user input controls in an expanded display region.

Based on user input, such as a flick or other gesture, the multi-dimensional icon can rotate to the next of a series of linked panels. In one embodiment, each linked panel can also have functionality or content associated therewith that is customizable by the user. For example, the user can select the panel to launch an application, a web page, or view content (e.g., a photo). In another embodiment, data can also be associated with a panel so that if the user selects the panel, an application can be launched or a website opened, using the data as a customization parameter.

The control section displays either the current position or route directions in text form in a strip-shaped area along one edge of the display screen, and a map in all or part of the remaining area of the display screen, and according to an instruction given from the user, the control section changes the display of the strip-shaped area to the display of at least a menu for accepting input of operations regarding the map.

Abstract: A technique to navigate through one or more menus of a handheld computer is disclosed. In one embodiment, the technique uses a handheld device having a first button to cause a cursor to navigate through a plurality of menu items and to highlight a desired menu item. The device also has a second button to cause the cursor to navigate through a plurality of menus when the cursor is highlighting one of the menus or a first menu item, and to cause the cursor to highlight a previous menu item when the cursor is highlighting a menu item other than the first menu item.

Abstract: An improved user interface is provided for displaying selectable software functionality controls and for presenting logical groupings of particular functionality controls associated with a selected top-level functionality. Underneath a row of top-level functionality tabs, functionalities controls associated with a given top-level functionality tab are presented in logical groupings. Selection of a particular tab switches modes of the user interface to present controls for functionalities associated with the selected tab.

Abstract: A method, apparatus, and article of manufacture obtain user input during a playback of a macro. A series of user actions are recorded in the form of a macro. A representation of the user actions is displayed. The representation provides nodes that each represent the user actions. One of the nodes is selected and configured by the user to request additional user input relating to a parameter of the selected node during playback of the macro. The macro is played back and automatically pauses at the selected node. User input is obtained and the macro automatically continues execution utilizing the user input for the parameter of the selected node. Additionally, one or the user actions includes a selection of objects. As part of the recorded macro, references to the selected objects are stored in a non-graphical manner. During playback, objects are selected based on the stored references.

Abstract: In some embodiments, a device displays content on a touch screen display and detects input by finger gestures. In response to the finger gestures, the device selects content, visually distinguishes the selected content, and/or updates the selected content based on detected input. Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for a user interface to allow for navigating a hierarchical menu. In one embodiment a method includes displaying a user interface including one or more menu elements, wherein each menu element is associated with a row of content titles that may be displayed by the user interface and detecting an input command associated with a menu element. The method may further include updating the display of the user interface based on the input command, wherein presentation of a row of content titles associated with the menu element is updated to allow for navigation within the row, and wherein content titles presented by the user interface for the menu element are a subset of content titles that may be accessed based on the menu element. The method may allow for bypassing one or more levels of the hierarchical menu.

In the interface, a slice has interface elements, a stack has a group of slices, a window has a group of stacks, and each interface element is associated with a segment of a highly structured document. The interface includes a panel having one or more containers, each container representing one stack, and one or more tokens, each token representing one slice. The method relocates at least one token to a different location in the container based on user input, displays in the panel a preview based on the relocated token, generates a user interface workflow based on the one or more containers and the relocated token, and displays the generated user interface workflow.

Abstract: Various technologies and techniques are disclosed that improve data searching on mobile devices. A facet-based search application is provided that has a filter region, a results region, a facet navigation region, and a menu region. A user applies a facet-based filter to a set of data by selecting a number on a keypad or other area that correlates spatially to a filter option in the facet navigation region. A set of data in the results region is updated based on the applied facet-based filter. The user can also apply a freeform text filter to the data by selecting one or more characters for which to search. The data displayed in the results region is updated based on the applied freeform text filter. When input is received from the user to save the applied filter, an attribute label is displayed as a query term in the filter region.

Abstract: A method comprising of displaying a GUI object is disclosed. The method displays a first graphical user interface (GUI) object with multiple selectable GUI items. The method detects a movement of a cursor in a direction of a particular selectable GUI item. The method determines an expected location for the stopping of the cursor. The method displays, at the expected location, a second GUI object corresponding to the particular GUI item.

Abstract: A system that includes a pop-up graphical user interface that includes menu bars overlapping marking menu zones. The interface pops up at the current position of the cursor when the space bar is held down. The menu bars are positioned around a central marking zone with the common menu bars located above the central zone and task specific menu bars located below the central zone. The common application menu bar is positioned outer most and the common window menu bar is located inner most. The menu bars are sized in a “stair-step” pattern and the commands therein are left and right justified to fill the menu bar evenly. The menu bar menu items are accessed just like menu bar items typically found at the top of windows. The menu bars mimic the menu bars that a user may need to use during tasks that users typically perform using the menu bars found in application windows.
