Patent number: 6968751Abstract: This invention relates to internal combustion engines with cylinders arranged parallel to the main shaft and where reciprocating movements of the pistons are converted to rotation by means of a Z-crank mechanism and motion converter, or conversely to systems such as pumps and compressors wherein rotation of the Z-crank and motion converter produces reciprocating motions of the pistons. The motion converter is prevented from rotation by a reaction control shaft or by a gear train. Connecting rods are prevented from rotating about their long axes. Double-ended configurations can be either opposed cylinder or opposed piston, and may include multiple pairs of pistons with each pair in a common cylinder. The Z-crank may be moved axially for the purpose of varying the compression ratio. Variation of the compression ratio is controlled by an engine control unit and is adjusted to optimize engine performance under varying loads and other conditions.Type: GrantFiled: January 21, 2004Date of Patent: November 29, 2005Assignee: Innovation Engineering, Inc.Inventors: Arthur Melvin Shulenberger, Luc Patrick Deschaumes

Patent number: 6626054Abstract: A rolling element or ball swashplate has a part-spherical surface covered in latitudinal grooves and ridges, in cross-section resembling parts of a spur gear wheel. The ball is mounted on a well-known rolling element bearing on its polar axis. The bearing and ball are carried on shaft so that the axis is at an angle to that of the shaft. Rotation of the latter causes the ball to precess. Cylindrical racks have circumferential teeth along their length (equivalent to a screw thread with a zero helix angle) which mesh with the ridges and grooves on the spherical ball surface. The racks may slide on rods, or may commonly form part of a larger component such as an hydraulic piston which itself moves bodily. As shaft rotates, the meshing ridges and teeth cause linear motion of the racks, or vice versa. At any time, the ball and racks may rotate about their respective axes, moving the meshing contact point to different parts of the same teeth and distributing the wear evenly.Type: GrantFiled: May 22, 2001Date of Patent: September 30, 2003Inventor: David Chinery

Patent number: 6548926Abstract: The subject of the invention is a linear displacement actuator which includes a male part and a female part. One part includes a screw thread and the other part includes at least one peripheral rib which collaborates with the screw thread. The inside diameter of the female part, increased by the depth of the screw thread, is greater than the outside diameter of the male part. The female part bears linear actuators arranged at right angles in a support and is free to be displaced axially with respect to the male part. The linear actuators place the female part in sinusoidal vibration in two perpendicular directions with an appropriate phase shift between the vibrations, and displaces, rotation-wise, the line of contact between the screw thread and the at least one peripheral rib. The screw thread and the peripheral rib remain motionless in terms of rotation and therefore bring about relative linear displacement of the female part and of the male part.Type: GrantFiled: February 23, 2001Date of Patent: April 15, 2003Assignee: Meritor Light Vehicle Systems-FranceInventor: Simon Blair Dobson

Patent number: 6082634Abstract: A wash spray apparatus that is particularly suitable for use in automatic car washes comprises an array of nozzles on a nozzle head. Water is supplied to the nozzle head through one or more flexible hoses, and the nozzle head is driven so that the spray from the nozzles moves through a conical path. The drive is effected by an hydraulic motor connected to the nozzle head through a nutating mechanism which produces the desired movement of the spray without rotation of the nozzle head.Type: GrantFiled: May 24, 1999Date of Patent: July 4, 2000Inventor: Daniel J. Patent number: 5890412Abstract: A control plate (1) of a hydraulic machine having a core (2) is disclosed, which at least on its upper side (O), lying in operation against a cylinder drum, is covered with a layer of friction-reducing plastics material (3). The plastics material (3) is joined to the core (2) by means of a connecting element (8) which, as a result of interlocking engagement with the plastics material (3) and/or the core (2), takes up tensile forces substantially at right angles to the upper side (O).Type: GrantFiled: December 23, 1996Date of Patent: April 6, 1999Assignee: Danfoss A/SInventors: Lars Martensen, Ove Thorb.o slashed.l Hansen

Patent number: 5868061Abstract: A hydraulic axial piston machine is described, having axially movable pistons, which at one end bear by means of slider shoes against a slanting plate, and having a pressure plate (10) for holding the slider shoes in contact with the slanting plate. Under certain operating conditions the slider shoes have a tendency to tilt and lift away from the slanting plate at one side. To prevent this, the pressure plate (10) acts only on a part lying, in the radial direction of the slanting plate (7), outside a predetermined region (28).Type: GrantFiled: October 7, 1996Date of Patent: February 9, 1999Assignee: Danfoss A/SInventors: Ove Thorb.o slashed.l Hansen, Lars Martensen

Patent number: 5862704Abstract: A retainer mechanism for an axial piston machine embodies a shoe plate having a plurality of openings defined in a circumferential outer portion thereof to receive a plurality of shoes and a biasing mechanism operative during assembly to apply a force to an inner portion of the shoe plate to hold the plurality of shoes against a swashplate disposed in the axial piston machine. Prior to assembly the shoe plate has a force transferring surface that is generally frusto-conical in shape. During assembly, the biasing mechanism applies a force to the inner portion of the shoe plate to generally flatten the frusto-conical shaped force transferring surface and urge it against a flat bearing surface of the respective shoes.Type: GrantFiled: November 27, 1996Date of Patent: January 26, 1999Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.Inventor: Gregory A. Patent number: 5839347Abstract: A guide member of a wobble plate compressor is slidably mounted in an inner wall surface of a housing of the wobble plate compressor. The guide member comprises a guide part having a U-shaped cross-section and defining a linear guide groove therein into which is slidably inserted a rotation-preventing member rigidly mounted on the wobble plate, and a pair of half cylinder shaped sliding parts mounted on opposite sides of the guide part for sliding in the inner wall surface of the housing. The inner surface of the guide member is hardened by surface treatment.Type: GrantFiled: November 27, 1995Date of Patent: November 24, 1998Assignee: Zexel CorporationInventors: Hiroshi Nomura, Kazuo Eitai, Minoru Kanaizuka, Hiroyuki Ishida

Patent number: 5826488Abstract: In a piston pump/motor of swash plate type which comprises: a cylinder block disposed in a casing to be rotatable jointly with a shaft therein; a plurality of pistons slidably inserted in the cylinder block parallel to the shaft; and a swash plate swingably attached to the casing for guiding the plurality of pistons on a front surface thereof and changing a displacement of each of the pistons by changing an inclination thereof, there is provided a swash plate angle changing apparatus in which the swash plate has a rear surface formed with a first contact surface and a second contact surface which make an angle between them. The casing has a swash plate support surface which is perpendicular to the shaft and with which the first contact surface and the second contact surface are each adapted to contact.Type: GrantFiled: April 14, 1997Date of Patent: October 27, 1998Assignee: Komatsu Ltd.Inventors: Mitsuru Arai, Hideki Kado, Sadao Nunotani, Koichi Morita, Mitsuru Oshiro, Seita Hayashi
