  • Patent number: 5269193
Abstract: A swash plate mechanism, for coverting linear motion into notary motion and vice versa is disclosed, which overcomes the main difficulties with older arrangements of swash plate drives. These are the high friction of most drives or the high complexity of efforts to overcome the friction effects. The mechanism of this invention permits the application of low friction bearings like ball bearings, in all of the rotating or sliding joints of the machine, except for the pistons, and their cylinders. The mechanisms described can be used in engines or in pumps with equal ease. The swash plate system disclosed, for example, has two spaced swash plates, rotating on a common shaft. Abstract: A swash plate type compressor is disclosed which is intended to prevent a hemispherical shoe, provided between the piston and the swash plate, from being spun on slat surface of the swash plate during operation of the compressor. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, the swash plate is formed with a step and the shoe with a cut portion engageable with the step so that the shoe is prevented from being spun on the slant surface of the swash plate which provides a turning moment to the shoe. The step is formed by an annular projection having an annular wall portion defining the inner limit of the slant surface area of the swash plate with which the flat face of the hemispherical shoe is kept in sliding contact, and the cut portion of the shoe has a curved surface conforming to the curvature of the annular wall portion. The shoe is located with its cut portion slidably contactable with the annular wall portion.

  • Patent number: 5140864
Abstract: The face angle dependent force versus displacement properties of the double faced, asymmetrical inclined plane are extended to a three dimensional rotating machine which exhibits the properties of continuously variable torque versus speed ratios in both forward and reverse directions. These desired properties are obtained in the three dimensional model through the use of circular disks which are tilted on their axes of rotation to create the force versus angle properties of the inclined plane. The selection of desired torque-speed ratios including transitioning through a zero speed or "frictionless clutch" operation. Ratio selection is accomplished by setting the tilt angles of three disks around their respective axes of rotation. Two of these disks are mounted through universal joint mounts to the transmission output shaft and the third disk is mounted, through a universal joint mount, to a non-rotating sleeve surrounding the output shaft.

  • Patent number: 5127314
Abstract: An assembly for providing socket plate torque restraint for a variable displacement wobble plate compressor is provided. Swing arms support a guide pin and allow for swinging motion to be directed to the pin. A translatable driving sleeve is attached to and rotates with the compressor drive shaft. The sleeve is formed with a cam section having a variable axial profile. An axially fixed follower cooperates with the cam section to generate the motion of the guide pin relative to the socket plate. The motion defines a motion of the socket plate which produces no inertial torques. The compensating torque restraint smooths the uneven driving action of the socket plate. The position of the cam section varies in relation to the displacement orientation of the socket plate, thus allowing precisely that socket plate motion, at all stroke positions, which produces no inertial torques.

  • Patent number: 5112197
Abstract: An assembly for providing socket plate torque restraint for a variable displacement wobble plate refrigerant compressor includes a non-rotary cross groove joint. The joint has a cylindrical outer race, a cylindrical inner race, slightly angled helical grooves in the races, a plurality of torque receiving balls and a cage for properly maintaining and positioning the balls in the cooperating grooves for operation. The joint is connected to a fixed anti-rotational shaft. The shaft is in the form of a sleeve and forms the inner race to effect torque restraint, but at the same time allow for translational axial motion of the socket plate. Radial and thrust bearings mount said socket plate relative to the rotary hub/journal. Lubricating fluid carried by the gaseous refrigerant lubricates the grooves and is then transferred by a passage extending from the grooves in the outer race to the radial/thrust bearings.
