Abstract: The invention relates to a method of manufacturing a product (10) formed in a pressing tool, wherein the tool is also designed to carry out a cutting and/or punching operation on the product. The cutting operation/punching operation is incomplete, such that waste/scrap (33, 41; 52; 64) resulting from the cutting/punching operation remains with the product (10) when the product leaves the pressing tool. The waste/scrap (33, 41; 52; 64) is removed during a subsequent finishing. The waste/scrap (33, 41; 52; 64) remains with the product (10) via at least one connecting bridge (31, 42; 51; 61) or the like.

Abstract: The present invention relates generally to electrical insulation barriers. More particularly, the invention encompasses an electrical insulation barrier having knock-out features for an electronic apparatus. The electrical insulation barrier is preferably made from a brittle material, such as, for example, a thermoset insulating material, a glass reinforced polyester laminate material (such as, for example, GPO-1, GPO-2, GPO-3), and the like. The electrical insulation barrier is preferably used to insulate and/or isolate electrical conductors. With this invention a single master or universal type part can be made and used in many configurations and locations dependent on the design of the electronic apparatus. The invention allows for the creation of one or more opening in the electrical insulation barrier by knocking-out or removing one or more pre-defined shapes to allow clearance for intersecting electrical parts.

Abstract: Fiducials having substantially continuous portions made on a substrate allow the position of the substrate to be determined. An approach for making fiducials involves moving first and second fiducial devices together back and forth across the substrate along a trajectory having a component along the lateral axis of the substrate while the substrate and the first and second fiducial devices are in relative motion along the longitudinal axis of the substrate. The first fiducial device operates to make one fiducial on the substrate during the movement along the trajectory and the relative motion. The second fiducial device operates to make another fiducial on the substrate during the movement along the trajectory and the relative motion. The fiducials may be formed so that they have a constant spatial frequency with the first fiducial being out of phase with respect to the second fiducial.

The method utilizes an anvil having a channel configured to support a suture during cutting of a barb at a first angular position while providing for non-interference between the anvil and barbs previously cut on the suture at one or more angular positions different than the first angular position. In embodiments the channel is provided with notches which receive previously-formed barbs during creation of subsequent barbs. Abstract: The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for shaving the inside of barrels. In particular, the present invention relates to reconditioning used wine barrels by shaving the inside surface to a predetermined depth, ready for re-crozering, toasting, and re-use. Conventional shaving methods typically involve routing the internal surface by hand, but this technique is problematic in that it is a very slow process, the quality of the wood is often adversely affected, and there is no way of ensuring that the surface will be shaved to the same depth across the entire surface. Therefore, the resultant internal dimensions of the barrel are not reflective, relatively, of the original barrel surface. The apparatus of the present invention includes a scanning means adapted to scan the internal dimensions of the barrel, and a cutting means adapted to shave the internal surface to a predetermined depth relative to the scanned internal dimensions.

The water jet which is cutting the glass pane (3) is captured damped by the water surge without its atomizing and rebounding onto the back-of the glass pane (3).

  • Patent number: 6470782
Abstract: A scribe device comprises a body (10). A holder (20) is supported by the body (10) such that the holder (20) can slightly slide in a direction of a slide axis (Lb) which intersects a surface of a workpiece (100). Retaining portions (15, 21) spaced apart in a direction of the slide axis (Lb) are formed on the body (10) and the holder (20), respectively. A vibratory actuator (40) is sandwiched between the retainer portion of the body and the retainer portion of the holder. The holder (20) holds an abutment member (30). The holder is biased by a biasing member (23) such that said retaining portion of the holder is pressed against the vibratory actuator. The vibratory actuator renders the vibrations in the direction of the slide axis to the holder. The abutment member transmits the vibrations from the holder to the workpiece. That is, the abutment member (30) is subjected to a static force and a vibration energy and pressed against the workpiece (100).

Abstract: A V-cutter for use in forming V-shaped grooves (3) on a light guide panel (1) of the backlight unit for a liquid crystal display (LCD) is disclosed. The V-cutter may include a Z-axis lift piece (7) and a W-axis lift piece (8), each of which has a pin kit (10a, 10b) with a plurality of pins (9a, 9b) attached at the bottom thereof. The pins (9a, 9b) are preferably equal in number and spacing to the V-shaped grooves (3) to be formed. The lift pieces (7, 8) may be vertically actuated by a Z-axis controller (5) and a W-axis controller (6). The light guide panel (1) is preferably fixtured to a table (11). The lift pieces (7, 8) are configured to move with respect to the table (11) so that, through successive X-axis and Y-axis operations, the V-shaped grooves can be formed in perpendicular directions with only two reciprocating motions. As a result, the manufacturing cost of the light guide panels (1) is reduced.

Abstract: A unidirectional and bidirectional optical fiber couplers using polymer optical fibers having mirrors formed within the polymer optical fibers for reflecting optical signals. The mirrors comprise a notch having at least one surface angled with respect to the central axis of the optical fiber for reflecting the optical signal perpendicular to its central axis. A unidirectional embodiment allows input optical signals to be coupled from any combination of input optical fibers and transmitted into any combination of output optical fibers. A bidirectional embodiment allows optical signals from tapping fibers to be reflected in opposite directions along a first, or BUS optical fiber. Another aspect of the present invention is an apparatus and method for controlling the depth of the notch by monitoring residue power through the optical fibers while the notch is being cut.

Abstract: An electric power cable sheath cutter for longitudinally slicing an outer metallic sheath of a power cable include a frame arranged to be clamped by clamps to each end of a selected longitudinal section of the power cable. A carriage, slidingly mounted to the frame, has rollers that embrace an outer surface of the power cable so that the carriage “floats” on the cable in use. A milling tool with its drive motor is supported on the carriage and is adjustable up and down to enable a depth to be chosen. As a result, the sheath is cut through and inner strands of the power cable are not damaged. The effective depth of the remote end of the cutting tool is controlled by operation of a first motor 20, and the carriage is driven along in use the frame by a second motor so that the cutter can operate automatically without close manual supervision.

Abstract: A paper product has a first sheet with a pattern of spaced openings permitting separation into sections and a second sheet releasably attached to the first sheet with a pattern of continuous curvilinear openings dividing the sheet into sections and being aligned with the openings of the first sheet. A die sheet for a die for cutting material includes a die sheet surface with a die pattern extending outwardly from the die sheet surface. The die pattern has slitting sections providing curvilinear, continuous openings through a second sheet of the material and spaced perforating sections extending above the slitting sections providing a pattern of spaced openings in the first sheet adjacent to the openings through the second sheet. A first method of constructing a die sheet includes covering a die surface with a first, spaced pattern of a first photo-resist material and then covering the first pattern with a second, continuous pattern of a second photo-resist material.
