Abstract: A method for forming a stable emulsion of a viscous hydrocarbon in an aqueous buffer solution includes the steps of: providing a viscous hydrocarbon containing an inactive natural surfactant and having a salt content by weight of less than or equal to about 15 ppm and having a water content by weight of less than or equal to about 0.1%; forming a solution of a buffer additive in an aqueous solution to provide a basic aqueous buffer solution, the buffer additive being operative to extract and activate the inactive natural surfactant from the viscous hydrocarbon; and mixing the viscous hydrocarbon with the aqueous buffer solution at a rate sufficient to provide an emulsion of the viscous hydrocarbon in the aqueous buffer solution, whereby the buffer additive extracts the inactive natural surfactant from the viscous hydrocarbon into the aqueous buffer solution and activates the inactive natural surfactant so as to stabilize the emulsion. According to the invention, the buffer additive is a water soluble amine.

Abstract: The invention concerns a longitudinal transfer system made out of rail sections for guiding transport cars from one processing station to another, two adjacent rail sections being connected with one another mechanically and electrically. A connecting part and section strips are connected with one rail section incapable of sliding and with the other rail section with play but only so tightly that motion of the second rail section is possible, in particular as a result of expansion.
Abstract: A sensor which can be held around a cylindrical body has elastic parts which have expansion-sensitive elements on the inner surfaces. The elastic parts are pressed against the cylinder surface under high pressure by bracing the two sensor halves, such that the expansion-sensitive elements engage the cylinder surface by friction force and thus can detect the surface expansion occurring. The expansion-sensitive elements are protected against mechanical influences. Thus expansion measurement strips can be applied to the cylinder surface without adhesive and can be used several times.
Abstract: A pump comprising a pump body having a control valve for controlling working fluid flow from the pump body to an actuator through a joint. The joint is connected mechanically to the pump body through a washer made of a material different from that of the pump body. The washer has a side surface held in contact with the pump body at a junction. The pump also includes an annular seal member provided to keep the junction from exposure to the environment. In an embodiment of the invention, the seal member is placed in an annular groove formed in the outer peripheral surface of the pump body. The seal member may have a side surface in fluid-sealing contact with the surface of the washer so as to keep the junction between the pump body and the washer from exposure to the environment.
Abstract: A process for the cyclic control of extruders which facilitates the precise control of an extruder to achieve maximum output and at the same time optimal quality of the extruded profiles. Accordingly therefore the extrusion velocity is controlled in such a way that the profile exit temperature is constant and equal to a prescribed temperature trajectory. Thereby the extrusion velocity and the profile exit temperature are measured over the complete cycle interval for each and every cycle k, and with the knowledge of the relationship between these quantities and the trajectory of the extrusion velocity of the cycle k, the trajectory of the extrusion velocity for the (k+1)th cycle is determined, such that the control error and the control effort are as low as possible and after completion of the (k+1)th extrusion cycle the whole process is repeated for every subsequent cycle therefore until the whole extrusion program is completed.
Abstract: Provided adjacent to the passageway for the bill 14 is an image sensor 17 which converts symbols printed on the bill 14 into electric signals during movement of the bill 14 along a passageway by a conveyer 15. Printer 19 records on printing paper the symbols based on output signals of the image sensor 17. Thus, the symbols printed on the documents may automatically be recorded.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for forming abrasive surfaces on the tips of a plurality of workpieces such as the tips of gas turbine airfoil blades. The method broadly comprises the steps of providing a mechanical masking device having a plurality of openings arranged around the circumference of the device, installing an array containing a plurality of workpieces to be coated within the mechanical masking device so that portions of the workpieces including the tips thereof extend through the openings, immersing the mechanical masking device with the installed array of workpieces in a tank containing a plating bath with a matrix material and an abrasive grit material in slurry form so that the workpieces lie in a substantially horizontal plane, and applying a current through the plating bath to form the abrasive surfaces of the tips of the workpieces. The mechanical masking device protects portions of the array form the coating operation.
