Abstract: When an aluminum plate is bonded directly to a ceramic substrate by cooling and solidifying molten aluminum which is injected into a mold so as to contact the ceramic substrate arranged in the mold, an additive, such as a TiB alloy, Ca or Sr, for decreasing the grain size of the aluminum plate to 10 mm or less while preventing the drop in thermal conductivity of the aluminum plate from the thermal conductivity of a pure aluminum plate from exceeding 20% of the thermal conductivity of the pure aluminum plate is added to the molten aluminum. When an aluminum alloy plate of an aluminum-silicon alloy is bonded directly to a ceramic substrate by cooling and solidifying a molten aluminum-silicon alloy which is injected into a mold so as to contact the ceramic substrate arranged in the mold, an aluminum-silicon alloy containing 0.1 to 1.5 wt % of silicon and 0.03 to 0.10 wt % of boron is injected into the mold.
Abstract: A method for analyzing performance of an airfoil includes determining: an estimated laminar separation location; a freestream turbulence intensity; a momentum thickness; and a turbulence length scale. Based upon the freestream turbulence intensity, momentum thickness, and turbulence length scale, a first momentum thickness Reynolds number associated with a first estimated laminar/turbulent boundary transition location along the airfoil is determined. If the estimated laminar separation location is downstream of the first estimated transition, the first estimated transition is used to determine a spatial domain for running a turbulent flow model. If the estimated laminar separation location is upstream of the first estimated transition, a second estimated transition location is used to determine a spatial domain for running the turbulent flow model.
Abstract: A gas turbine engine compressor has a number of shroud rings, at least a bleed one of which defines a number of bleed ports. A structural hub is downstream of the shroud rings and secured relative to the shroud rings. A structural hub case extends from an aft joint with the structural hub to a fore joint with a joined one of the shroud rings and has a number of valve ports. At least a portion of the structural case extends structurally between the fore and aft joints. A valve element is shiftable between first and second conditions for respectively blocking and not blocking communication through the valve ports.

Abstract: An iron-based sintered alloy having improved thermal and mechanical strength is provided. The iron-based sintered alloy with dispersed hard particles comprises: a matrix comprising, by weight, 0.4 to 2% silicon (Si), 2 to 12% nickel (Ni), 3 to 12% molybdenum (Mo), 0.5 to 5% chromium (Cr), 0.6 to 4% vanadium (V), 0.1 to 3% niobium (Nb), 0.5 to 2% carbon (C), and the reminder of iron (Fe); and hard particles comprising 60 to 70% molybdenum (Mo), 0.3 to 1% boron (B), 0.1% or less carbon (C), and the reminder of iron (Fe). The hard particles are dispersed in the matrix in an amount in the range of 3 to 20% based on the entire alloy. They are sintered to produce the iron-based sintered alloy. Addition of boron into the ferromolybdenum hard particles enhances the wettability of the ferromolybdenum hard particles to prevent the hard particles from falling off the matrix.

Abstract: An apparatus for discriminating valuable papers is provided wherein a validation control circuit 56 (i) drives conveyer device 8 to inwardly move bill along passageway 9 when inlet sensor 13 detects bill, (ii) ceases driving of conveyer device 8 to keep bill in the standby position in passageway 9 when trigger sensor 50 detects bill, (iii) drives a release device 42 to shift a guide roller 40 from the contact position to the separated position, (iv) activates a centering device 10 to centralize bill along the longitudinal central axis of passageway 9, (v) drives release device 42 to return guide roller 40 from the separated position to the contact position, and (vi) again drives conveyer device 8 to further inwardly move bill. When bill is inserted into an inlet 7, inlet sensor 13 detects bill to immediately drive conveyer device 8 and center bill on conveyer device 8 for smooth inserting, transporting and centering of bill with the reduced number of structural components of the apparatus.
