If a sector under consideration is transmitting on supplemental channels(19), the method involves artificially biasing the findings of the searcher window by a predetermined value (20). The biasing value may be constant, variable or proportional to the number of supplemental channels on the base station. After the local maxima corresponding to base stations transmitting on supplemental channels have been biased (20), the path lists are created (21).

    Abstract: A method and apparatus is disclosed for measurement processing of Satellite Positioning System (SPS) signals. A plurality of SPS signals from a corresponding plurality of SPS satellites are received in an SPS receiver. The signal environment corresponding to the location in which the SPS receiver is located is characterized to produce signal environment data. In one exemplary embodiment, an information source, such as a cellular network based database, is searched to retrieve the signal environment data given an approximate location of the GPS receiver. This approximate location may be specified by a location of a cell site which is in cellular radio communication with a cellular communication device which is co-located with the GPS receiver. One or more parameters related to signal characteristics of the satellite signals are defined. Threshold values for the parameters are determined using the signal environment data.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for improving search efficiency in a remote unit of a slotted mode, wireless communication system. In a slotted mode communication system the remote unit is in an “active state” only during its assigned slot. A controller in the remote unit passes a selected set of search parameters to a search engine at the beginning of the assigned slot. The search engine performs a search, using the selected set of search parameters, and stores the search results. The controller then immediately passes another set of search parameters to the search engine for the next search without evaluating the results of the just completed search. Searching continues as long as the remote unit is in its assigned slot. When the remote unit enters the inactive state the controller evaluates the results of the searches performed during the active state.

    Abstract: According to a disclosed embodiment, a receiver comprising a digital rotator in combination with a frequency error discriminator in a digital automatic frequency control loop is used to arrive at accurate digital values used to calibrate a local oscillation frequency. A frequency error in the oscillation frequency of a local frequency generation loop causes a change in the baseband input signal frequency. The change in the baseband input signal frequency related to the frequency error in the local frequency generation loop can be detected as a phase rotation by the frequency error discriminator. By using the digital automatic frequency control loop, the frequency error introduced by the local frequency generation is determined with accuracy. The frequency error and corresponding control bits are entered into a calibration table. The calibration table may be used to adjust the local oscillation frequency for temperature changes, pilot frequency searching, and quick paging.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for the variable rate coding of a speech signal. An input speech signal is classified and an appropriate coding mode is selected based on this classification. For each classification, the coding mode that achieves the lowest bit rate with an acceptable quality of speech reproduction is selected. Low average bit rates are achieved by only employing high fidelity modes (i.e., high bit rate, broadly applicable to different types of speech) during portions of the speech where this fidelity is required for acceptable output. Lower bit rate modes are used during portions of speech where these modes produce acceptable output. Input speech signal is classified into active and inactive regions. Active regions are further classified into voiced, unvoiced, and transient regions. Various coding modes are applied to active speech, depending upon the required level of fidelity. Coding modes may be utilized according to the strengths and weaknesses of each particular mode.

    Abstract: A QMIP unit receives and stores data information from a first set of modules. The QMIP unit also receives and stores a flow control indication from each module of a first set of modules. The flow control indication is indicative as to whether each module of the first set of modules is capable of receiving data. The QMIP unit creates a frame which carries the data information and the flow control indication corresponding to one of the first set of modules. The QMIP unit forwards the frame over the common data link. At the far end of the data link, the receiving QMIP unit parses the flow control indication and the data information from the frame and forwards the flow control indication and the data information to a destination module. The destination module processes the data according to normal procedures. In addition, the destination module responds to the flow control indication by ceasing the transmission of data to the sending module if so indicated.

While in the inactive state the remote unit misses a portion of the continuous stream of symbols. Following the interruption of the stream of symbols, the state metrics of a trellis within the decoder are initialized. Initialization of the state metrics may be such that the decoding process will be biased towards only valid states and away from invalid states. In addition, the initialization may be such that there is not a bias towards any particular state within the trellis.
