  • Patent number: 6058753
Abstract: A method and apparatus for reforming the base of a container such as a can having a domed base. The apparatus comprises independent assemblies for rotating the can and for reforming the base profile. The base reforming assembly uses a torque shaft to twist an eccentric and actuate radial movement of a roll into contact with the can base. A stop prevents movement of this roll beyond a predetermined amount, thereby maintaining consistency of profile depth. By minimizing moving parts of the tooling, wear is limited to that which may arise from the stop alone.

  • Patent number: 6055836
Abstract: Apparatus for re-forming a seaming flange (F) formed on the open end of a can body (B) comprises: a bottom support for supporting the bottom end wall of the can body and a pusher pad (2) including a circular disc (12) having an outer profile adapted to receive and support the open end of the can body with the seaming flange protruding radially outwardly beyond the disc. A push rod (4) moves the pusher pad axially towards and away from the bottom support such that successive can bodies can be held there between whilst the pusher pad and bottom support are driven in rotation about their common axis. One or more rollers (34) are mounted adjacent the outer edge of the pusher pad disc for axial movement with the push rod and the pusher pad (2) is mounted on the push rod (4) for limited axial movement thereon against the action of a spring (38).

  • Patent number: 6056849
Abstract: In an apparatus for the processing of workpieces and the surface treatment thereof by means of a plasma, a processing chamber (11) to process workpieces and a treatment chamber (10) for the surface treatment of the workpieces by means of a plasma are united in one device. The two chambers (10, 11) are sealed against the environment in a gastight manner and separated from each other by means of a gastight door (12). Thus, workpieces (15) can be machined in the processing chamber (11) by means of a tool (20) while the door (12) is closed. After processing, the conditions in the two chambers (10, 11) are adapted, for example by introducing the same gas into the processing chamber (11) as into the treatment chamber (10). After the pressure in the two chambers (10, 11) has been equalized, the door (12) is opened by displacement, and the workpieces (15) are transferred into the treatment chamber (10).

  • Patent number: 6056731
Abstract: A suction device for body fluids comprises a container (10) being airtightly closable by means of a cover (11). A bag (14) is connected to a cylindrical projection (12) of the cover (11) by means of a support ring (13). A suction opening (15) is provided in the cover (11) to produce a low pressure in the bag (14). Furthermore, the suction opening (15) comprises a branching (31) to produce a low pressure in the container (10) as well. Additionally, the cover (11) comprises an outlet opening (17) enclosed by a hollow body (37). The hollow body (37) can be pushed into the container (10) to empty the bag (14) so that the fluid contained in the bag (14) can be poured out via openings (40, 41) of the hollow cylinder (37).

  • Patent number: 6032926
Abstract: A hose coupling comprises a coupling element with a throughflow channel and a plug member with a plug projection for insertion into the throughflow channel of the coupling element. The plug projection opens a valve when inserted. To retain the plug member on the coupling element, detents are used that each have a locking nose engaging behind a retaining member. Thereby, withdrawing the plug member is inhibited. The plug member may take a second position in which the plug projection does not yet push open the valve, but already seals the throughflow channel. Thus, additional hose clamps may be omitted.

  • Patent number: 6026670
Abstract: Apparatus for use in forming can bodies comprises a punch including a hollow punch sleeve with a supply of compressed air connected to the interior thereof. A concave dome void recess in the nose of the punch is adapted to receive a correspondingly shaped doming tool for forming a domed base profile in the can body and an air passage provides fluid communication between the interior of the punch sleeve and the concave recess. A valve located in the air passage is biased into the open position by a spring but is normally held closed by the pressure of air in the interior of the sleeve. Entry of the doming tool into the dome void recess when the valve is closed causes a substantial rise in pressure in the air passage which enables the valve to open and deliver compressed air to the interior of the can body to assist in stripping it from the punch.

  • Patent number: 6024658
Abstract: A method of determining in a game of tennis the point of contact of a service ball relative to a service line by (a) monitoring a field of view along the service line and producing an electronic representation of an upper boundary of the ball as it passes through the field of view, (b) scanning the upper boundary of that representation progressively in the direction of the ball flight and determining at successive spaced positions along the path of the ball the angle of definition of the boundary, and (c) comparing successive values of that angle and noting the position of the ball at which that angle reduces relatively rapidly to a lower or even a negative value. A preferred method determines and compares successive horizontal components of successive sections of the boundary which have successive equal value vertical components.

  • Patent number: 6021882
Abstract: A token for use with a token operated device includes a plurality of predetermined optical characteristics. The plurality of predetermined optical characteristics are disposed in a substantially radially symmetrical manner with respect to the token, and each of the optical characteristics have the property of a facet wherein an effective surface normal of said facet is a line along a predetermined vector angle with an elevational angle ranging preferably between 30.degree. and 60.degree.. An azimuthal angle of the facet surface is other than substantially along a radial line of the token or substantially along a line tangent to an annular ring centered on the token such that a token operated device can validate the predetermined optical characteristics substantially independent of token orientation.
