  • Patent number: 8233389
Abstract: In a vehicle ad-hoc network (VANET), a transceiver node is arranged in a vehicle. The node includes a protocol stack, which includes an application layer, a link layer; and a congestion control layer arranged between the application layer and the link layer. The congestion layer transfers short messages between the application layer and the link layer. The short messages are defined according to a standard for the VANET, and the congestion layer optimizes a network-wide rate allocation for the short messages.

  • Patent number: 8228883
Abstract: A wireless network master node periodically broadcasts beacons that specify a structure of a following fixed length superframe. Slave nodes determine a channel condition between each slave and the master. Then, the set of slaves is partitioned into subsets of slaves according to the channel conditions. The master assigns, to each slave, a transmission rate in a low to high order according to the channel conditions, and the slaves transmit data to the master in the low to high order between two consecutive beacons, wherein the subsets of slaves with a higher transmission rate also receive the data from the subsets of slaves with a lower transmission rate, and wherein a slave with a higher transmission rate includes a part of or all the data from a slave with a lower transmission rate.

  • Patent number: 8229244
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention describe a method for reducing a blur in an image of a scene. First, we acquire a set of images of the scene, wherein each image in the set of images includes an object having a blur associated with a point spread function (PSF) forming a set of point spread functions (PSFs), wherein the set of PSFs is suitable for null-filling operation. Next, we invert jointly the set of images and the set of PSFs to produce an output image having a reduced blur.

  • Patent number: 8229242
Abstract: A point correspondence procedure is applied to a set of images of a specular object to produce sparse reflection correspondences. The set of images is subject to rotation while acquired by a camera. That is, either the camera, the environment or the object rotates. Either a linear system A?=0 is solved or a related second order cone program (SOCP) is solved, where ? is a vector of local surface parameters. Gradients of the surface are obtained from the local quadric surface parameters, and the gradients are integrated to obtain normals, wherein the normals define a shape of the surface.

  • Patent number: 8229965
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention disclose a system and a method for transforming a set of particles in an output set of particles representing a set of words suitable for use in an information retrieval system. The method generates, for each particle in the set of particles, combinations of parts of a particle, and replaces the particle in the set of particles with the parts of a combination maximizing a total minimum edit distance (MED) of the set of particles. For example, the method determines a MED of each particle in the set of particles, determines the total MED of the set of particles as summations of the MED of each particle, and then determines the combination maximizing the total MED of the set of particles.

  • Patent number: 8229921
Abstract: An information retrieval system stores and retrieves documents using particles and a particle-based language model. A set of particles for a collection of documents in a particular language is constructed from training documents such that a perplexity of the particle-based language model is substantially lower than the perplexity of a word-based language model constructed from the same training documents. The documents can then be converted to document particle graphs from which particle-based keys are extracted to form an index to the documents. Users can then retrieve relevant documents using queries also in the form of particle graphs.

  • Patent number: 8223705
Abstract: A method optimizes a performance of a multi-cell orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) network that includes a set of base stations (BSs) located in a cell, and each BS transmits data on downlink channels to a set of mobile stations (MSs) in the cell. Each BS acquires channel state information (CSI) and inter-cell interference information (ICI) for each downlink channel to each MS in the cell. Each BS selects a power level and a modulation coding scheme level (MCS) for transmitting the data to each MS on the downlink channels based on the CSI and ICI, such that a bit rate is maximized and the ICI is minimized. Then, time and frequency resource are allocated for transmitting the data on the downlink channels to the set of MSs, such that the allocated resources are minimized to optimize the performance of the network.

  • Patent number: 8224071
Abstract: Three-dimensional points acquired of an object in a sensor coordinate system are registered with planes modeling the object in a world coordinate system by determining correspondences between the points and the planes. Points are transformed to an intermediate coordinate system using the correspondences and transformation parameters. The planes are transformed to an intermediate world coordinate system using world rotation and translation parameters. Intermediate rotation and translation parameters are determined by applying coplanarity constraints and orthogonality constraints to the points in the intermediate sensor coordinate system and the planes in the intermediate world coordinate system. Then, rotation and translation parameters between the sensor and world coordinate systems are determined to register the points with the planes.

  • Patent number: 8218523
Abstract: A network includes a master node (master) and a set of slave nodes (slaves). The network uses orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) and time division multiple access (TDMA) symbols on sub-carriers. During a first downlink transmission from the master to the set of slaves using downlinks and all of the sub-carriers, a broadcast polling packet including data packets for each slave and sub-carrier assignments for the slaves is broadcast. Each slave transmits simultaneously to the master using uplinks and the assigned sub-carriers, a first response packet after receiving the broadcast polling packet. The master then broadcasts using the downlinks and all of the sub-carriers, a group acknowledgement packet, wherein the broadcast polling packet, the response packet, and the group acknowledgement packet include one superframe in one communication cycle, and wherein the broadcasting on the downlinks and the transmitting on the uplinks are disjoint in time.

  • Patent number: 8217961
Abstract: A method estimates a 3D pose of a 3D specular object in an environment. In a preprocessing step, a set of pairs of 2D reference images are generated using a 3D model of the object, and a set of poses of the object, wherein each pair of reference images is associated with one of the poses. Then, a pair of 2D input images are acquired of the object. A rough 3D pose of the object is estimated by comparing features in the pair of 2D input images and the features in each pair of 2D reference images using a rough cost function. The rough estimate is refined using a fine cost function.

  • Patent number: 8218869
Abstract: The embodiments of the invention describe a method for segmenting an image. We perform an initial segmentation of the image to produce a previous segmented region and segment iteratively the image using a spatial random walk based on a shape prior of the previous segmented region to produce a next segmented region. We compare the next segmented region with the previous segmented region, and repeat the segmenting and the comparing until the previous and next segmented regions converge. After that, we select the next segmented region as a final segmented region.
