  • Patent number: 8219510
Abstract: A distribution of an unobserved class for a classifier with no known training data is learned by first determining, for each known class, known distribution using known training data. Sufficient statistics of the distribution of the unobserved class are determined from the known distributions and the training data associated with each known class. If the known training data and the known distributions are bounded, then update parameters of the distribution of the unobserved class from the sufficient statistics, else update the parameters from sufficient statistics and a priori probability distributions that specify the distributions of the parameters.

  • Patent number: 8213691
Abstract: A method identifies an unknown face in an input image using reference images of known faces. A Haar-like feature vector is extracted from each image. The vectors are compressed. An L1 norm is determined between the compressed feature vector of the input image and each compressed feature vector from the set of reference images to determine a most similar reference image. The identity of the face associated with the most similar reference image is assigned as the identity of the unknown face in the input image.

  • Patent number: 8204718
Abstract: A method reconstructs a streaming signal xn from streaming measurements by maintaining a working set of measurements, a working snapshot of the measurement system, an internal working signal estimate, and an external working signal estimate. Using a current working set of measurements, the internal working signal estimates, the working snapshot of the measurement system, and a model of a signal sparsity are refined. The external working signal estimate is refreshed. A subset of coefficients of the external working signal estimate is committed to an output. A next streaming measurement and a corresponding next measurement vector are received. The working set of measurements, the working snapshot of the measurement system, and the internal working signal estimate are updated to incorporate the next measurement and the corresponding measurement vector. Then, an oldest measurement and a corresponding oldest measurement vector, and an effect of the committed subset of coefficients are removed.

  • Patent number: 8194072
Abstract: An image of an object from a known object class is synthesized by first obtaining reflectance fields for various training objects from the object class. A reflectance field model is defined for the object class using a combination of the reflectance fields of the training objects. The parameters of the reflectance field model are optimized to estimate a particular reflectance field of a particular object from the object class given one or more input images of the particular object. The particular reflectance field is fitted to the particular object, and then the new image of the particular object is synthesized by changing the illumination parameters of the particular fitted reflectance field model after the fitting.

  • Patent number: 8179251
Abstract: A wireless sensor network includes an initial set of anchors at known locations, and a set of sensors at unknown locations. Ranges, from each sensor to at least three of the anchors, determine a position, an anchor ranging weight, and an anchor position weight. For each anchor, the anchor ranging weight and the anchor position weight form a combined weight. A weighted least square (WLS) function for the positions and the combined weights is minimized to determine a position of the sensor, and a sensor position weight. The sensor is identified as being a member of a set of candidate anchor nodes, and the candidate anchor node with a largest sensor position weight is selected to be transformed to another anchor to minimize propagation of errors in the positions of the set of sensors.

  • Patent number: 8179300
Abstract: A method surpresses clutter in a space-time adaptive processing system. The method achieves low-complexity computation via two steps. First, the method utilizes an improved fast approximated power iteration method to compress the data into a much smaller subspace. To further reduce the computational complexity, a progressive singular value decomposition (SVD) approach is employed to update the inverse of the covariance matrix of the compressed data. As a result, the proposed low-complexity STAP procedure can achieve near-optimal performance with order-of-magnitude computational complexity reduction as compared to the conventional STAP procedure.

  • Patent number: 8175035
Abstract: A method allocates resources in an orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) network including a set of base stations (BSs), and a set of mobile stations (MSs) for each BS. Each cell includes a center and edge zone. A node weighted constraint graph is constructed for the network. Maximal independent sets in the graph are searched as sub-channels are allocated to the MSs in edge zones. Remaining bandwidth is allocated to the MSs in the center zones. Power is assigned to the sub-channels so that inter-cell interference is minimized and traffic load is maximized.

  • Patent number: 8165098
Abstract: A method allocates bandwidth from a radio frequency spectrum in a cellular network including a set of cells. Each cell includes a base station for serving a set of mobile stations in the cell. An area around each base station is partitioned into a center region and an edge region. In each base station, cell-center bandwidth for use by the mobile stations in the center region is reserved according to an inter-cell interference coordination (ICIC) protocol, and cell-edge bandwidth for use by the mobile stations in the edge region is reserved according to the ICIC protocol. The bandwidth can be fixed or adaptive to reduce the signaling overhead. The adaptive bandwidth can be further partitioned into reserved and the free bands. Mobile stations are classified as primary and secondary users, depending on whether they use or are assigned the fixed or adaptive band radio resources.

  • Patent number: 8165403
Abstract: A pose of an object is determine by acquiring sets of images of the object by a camera, wherein the object has a thread arranged on a surface such that a local region of the object appears substantially spherical, wherein the camera is at a different point of view for each set, and wherein each image in each set is acquired while the scene is illuminated from a different direction. A set of features is extracted from each image, wherein the features correspond to points on the surface having normals towards the camera. A parametric line is fitted to the points for each image, wherein the line lies on a plane joining a center of the camera and an axis of the object. Then, geometric constraints are applied to lines to determine the pose of the object.

  • Patent number: 8160396
Abstract: A method and camera apparatus touches up a source image to produce a target image. The source image is partitioned into non-overlapping tiles of pixels. Each tile is labeled. A probability distribution of the labels is inferred, in which the probability distribution is a conditional random field. Weights are determined from the conditional random field. Then, each tile of the source image is transformed according to the weights to produce a corresponding tile of a target image. The transforming maximizes a conditional likelihood of the target image given the source image, while marginalizing over all possible labelings of the source image.

  • Patent number: 8155088
Abstract: A method for allocating resources in an orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) network, where each cell in the network has a center region and an edge region. The cell center region uses a frequency band orthogonal to the frequency band used by the cell edge region. The frequency band is made up of resource blocks (RBs) or non-overlapping sets of subcarriers. Upon availability of cell-center RBs, cell-center user equipment (UEs) are assigned resource blocks. A fixed number of cell edge regions from a few adjacent cells form a cluster, and only the cell edge regions with the highest achievable throughput rate within each cluster gets to transmit in a given scheduling instance.
