Abstract: A magnetic yoke (22,23) carrying rows of permanent magnets (33,34) and a target (49,50) is connected to a top plate (41,42) by spring bolts (67) which urge the yoke toward the top plate. Rotatable cams (43,44) between the top plate and the yoke are used to adjust the distance between the top plate and the yoke. Clamping bars (37,38) having a claw-like edge parts (59-66) limit the maximum distance and, in a preferred embodiment, hold the target against the yoke.

Abstract: A first reactant is immobilized i.e. in a porous matrix (50), adjacent a sample electrode (46) within a reaction chamber. Energizing of the electrode (46) electrophoretically attracts a mobile second reactant and/or electrolytically induces appropriate reaction conditions to enhance reaction of the first and second reactants. Polarity reversals between the sample electrode (46) and remote electrodes (38), (42), (44) cause unreacted second reactant and/or by-products to migrate away from the immobilized first reactant. The techniques are useful for sequential chemical reactions such as sequencing or construction of proteins, polysaccharides and nucleic acids where cyclical additions and removals of reactants are required. The techniques are amenable to automated micro and nano scale construction and operation and allow direct electrophoretic (38) interfacing with chromatographic, HPCE and mass spectrophotometric equipment.

Abstract: In order to remove tumor necrosis factor .alpha. (TNF.alpha.) or/and bacterial lipopolysaccharides (LPS, endotoxin) extracorporeally from whole blood or/and blood plasma in an extracorporeal perfusion system, the blood or plasma is passed over a cation exchanger and an anion exchanger material. A device according to the invention for the extracorporeal treatment of patient's blood or plasma therefore contains a cation exchanger material and an anion exchanger material wherein these materials are contained in at least one compartment of an extracorporeal perfusion system.

Abstract: An apparatus for collecting antigen, including an allergen exemplified by a dust-mite, dispersed in a motile fluid in a given environment that can be inserted in a section of a pipe of a standard vacuum cleaner hose. The apparatus includes a receptacle whose body is formed of nylon, typically with a pore size of from 15 to 60 .mu.m. The receptacle is coated with an antibody that retains the antigen in a contacting relationship. The apparatus is provided with a removable holder, which assists in locating the apparatus in the pipe of the vacuum cleaner. The apparatus can be used directly in an immunoassay for confirming the presence of, or quantifying, the antigen.

Abstract: Process for the production of oligonucleotides of formula II, in which the exocyclic amino groups of the bases adenine, guanine, cytosine, 7-deazaadenine and 7-deazaguanine carry N-phenylacetyl groups, are used for oligonucleotide synthesis, wherein in a first step a starting nucleotide is bound to a solid carrier, subsequently the desired oligonucleotide is synthesized by stepwise coupling with appropriately activated further monomeric nucleotide building blocks of the general formula I with the above-mentioned meanings, if desired, trivalent phosphorus is oxidized to pentavalent phosphorus during and after the synthesis, the oligonucleotide is cleaved from the carrier and the 5' protecting groups are cleaved off. The phenylacetyl functional groups that protect exocyclic NH.sub.2 groups of the bases can be cleaved off in a mild way with penicillin amidohydrolase (EC 3.5.1.11).

Abstract: Disclosed is a dissolved methyllithium-containing composition for use in synthesis reactions (synthesis composition) and processes of preparing the composition. In the sythesis composition the methyllithium is contained in a solvent of the general formula (I) ##STR1## wherein independently R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are a hydrogen, methyl or ethyl residue and R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are a methyl or ethyl residue. To prepare the methyllithium-containing synthesis composition of the invention lithium powder or granular lithium is dispersed in a solvent having the general formula I, methyl halide is added at a controlled rate, the reaction temperature is maintained in the range of from 0.degree. to 60.degree. C., and the resulting lithium halide is separated from the methyllithium solution.

Abstract: Vertical, parallel palisades (3) are distributed around the perimeter of a circle, spaced apart by gaps, surrounding the melt. An annular plate (4) supports the palisades (3), the palisades being provided with cavities through which a coolant flows. An induction coil (20) surrounds the palisades (3) on the outside, an alternating current flowing through the coil. The plate (4) is provided with support surfaces (4a, 4b), equal in number to the number of palisades (3), their shape conforming to the base surfaces of the palisades (3). Seen in the circumferential direction, every second support surface (4a) is covered by an electrically insulating film (7). All of the palisades (3) together are surrounded by a ring (18) of electrically insulating material, which holds the palisades (3) on the plate (4).
