  • Patent number: 5424693
Abstract: A surface mountable microwave IC package with broad bandwidth and low loss has been developed. The impedance mismatch due to the electrical discontinuity of the I/O pads and via holes in the structure is compensated. The compensation structure has two features. In one feature, ground planes are printed on both sides of a dielectric substrate to increase the distributed capacitance between the signal line and the ground, thereby obtaining a matched characteristic impedance. In the second feature, two grounding via holes are used to compensate for the mismatch of the charactersitic impedance due to the feedthrough via-slot connection of the signal line from the back-side to the front-side of the substrate.

  • Patent number: 5398133
Abstract: Multilayers of low refractive index amorphous silicon nitride and high refractive index amorphous silicon are interleaved to construct a near-infrared optical filter. For an edge filter, the structure is transparent to near-infrared light and opaque to visible light. For a band-pass filter, the low-pass filter is superimposed with a high-pass filter. Anti-reflection coating can be added to improve the transmittance. These multilayers are deposited with Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition technique.

  • Patent number: 5397936
Abstract: In an autozero type MOSFET comparator, the spurious current induced by the high frequency input voltage can flow through the resistance of the reset switch to introduce an offset voltage error during the autozero mode. A canceler is used to prevent the spurious current from flowing through the reset switch. A T-network with two series capacitors and a shunt switch is used as the canceler. The spurious current is by-passed by the shunt switch and prevented from flowing through the reset switch placed at the output of the T-network.The spurious current canceler is particularly useful for a sub-ranging ADC, where the comparator is used also as a sample-and-hold circuit to hold the input voltage across the series capacitors by opening all the sampling switches, the reset switch and the shunt switch.

  • Patent number: 5389904
Abstract: This invention discloses a monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) package with filtering property. The filtering action is inherent with the structure of the package. This structure overcomes the limitation of traditional packages, which can only transmit the signal without processing the signal. A specially designed surface-mountable structure is used in the input and the output terminals. Any impedance from this special structure can be compensated by the filtering structure in each port. The filtering structure is located between the input (or the output) structure and the die cavity in each port. The package also provides ground connection to the MMIC by means of metal-filled via holes connected to the surface mounting side.

  • Patent number: 5355002
Abstract: In an active matrix liquid crystal display, an extra insulating layer is deposited over the active region of the thin film transistor and the transparent electrode of the picture element. The interconnection between the source electrode of the TFT and the transparent electrode lies over the extra insulating layer. The edge between the a-Si and S/D electrode contact is passivated by the extra insulating to avoid direct contact of the S/D metal electrode with the undoped amorphous silicon channel. Contacts to the TFT source and drain electrodes are made through a heavily-doped amorphous silicon to avoid direct contact of aluminum with undoped amorphous silicon channel, which can eliminate dark leakage current with negative gate bias. The metal contact to the transparent electrode is made via a contact hole in the extra insulating layer to avoid the etching solution of aluminum interconnection from attacking the transparent electrode.

  • Patent number: 5346833
Abstract: An inverted staggered (bottom gate) thin film transistor (TFT) for active matrix liquid crystal display is processed with three masks. The first mask is used to pattern a metal film on a glass substrate as the gate of the TFT, the scan line of the TFT array, and a portion of the data line of the TFT array. The second mask is used to form a TFT mesa with a gate dielectric layer, an a-Si layer as channel, and a heavily-doped n+s-Si layer for contacting the source and the drain of the TFT. A third mask is used to pattern the transparent conductive indium-tin oxide film as the pixel electrode, the source/drain electrodes of the TFT, and the interconnections of the data line.

  • Patent number: 5306532
Abstract: A protective garment material is constructed with a matrix of cells with protrusions. These cells are linked with polygonal connecting plates, which have cuts at the corners to form a section of a complete frame for the protrusions. The linkage is formed with aligned semicylindrical flanges extended from the edges of the connecting plate and semicydrical grooves aligned in a different direction serving as sockets for the semicylindrical flanges from a neighboring connecting plate, so that any two neighboring plate can be rotated with respect to each other. The connecting plate also serves as a protective layer for the inner cell in the unprotruded area. The protrusions dirert any frontal thrust sidewise to prevent penetration.

  • Patent number: 5285302
Abstract: A thin film switching array includes a plurality of switching elements arranged in the shape of an array on a substrate. Each switching element includes a thin film transistor and a compensation capacitor. One electrode of the compensation capacitor is formed by the same mask layer as the gate of the thin film transistor, and the other electrode of the compensation capacitor is common to the source electrode of the thin film transistor. The butting error due to multiple exposures of the number of blocks to compose a large area active matrix liquid crystal display, known as the block division effect, can be eliminated by laying out the compensation capacitor with area complementary to that of the stray capacitance such that the summation of the two capacitances remain constant. With constant capacitance, the feedthrough transient from the gate sigate to the liquid crystal display element becomes uniform, and one common compensating voltage can be used to offset the transient effect.

  • Patent number: 5223834
Abstract: A timing control for precharged digital circuits to avoid spurious error appearing at the output due to the slow pull-down of the precharged node after precharging. A NAND gate is used to delay the precharged node siganl transmitting to the output stage until the precharged node is fully discharged. This timing control circuit is used to prevent any spurious peaking of the output of an analog-to-digital converter using precharged bit lines.

  • Patent number: 5193018
Abstract: A matrix display system includes an active matrix display device having an array of liquid crystal picture elements (pixel) with associated switches using thin film transistors (TFT). The pixels are arranged in groups, each having two pixels and switched by two complementary TFTs. The n-channel TFTs are switched on by a positive pulse and the p-channel TFTs are switched on by a negative pulse. The two switching signals are alternately fed from a row conductor which feeds both the n-channel TFTs and the p-channel TFTs on the same row. Each group of the two TFTs are addressed via the same row conductor and the same column conductor, which carries the data signal. In this way, either the number of row conductors are reduced by one half or the number of column conductors are reduced by one half.

  • Patent number: 5192927
Abstract: This invention discloses a band-stop filter, which has multiple sections of non-uniform and unbalanced microstrip transmission line. Such a structure can optimize the characteristics and maximize the matching frequency range. The total length of the filter can be reduced to a half of that of a conventional filter, and the insertion loss in the pass-band is reduced to a third of that of a conventional filter. Besides, this invention suggests a structure which does not require the inward etching of the microstrip line. Instead, the microstrip line itself is used directly as the building element of a spur-line filter. Thus, the tolerance in fabrication can be greatly relaxed without effecting the required characteristics.
