  • Patent number: 4673454
Abstract: An improved bipolar membrane, a precursor for said membrane and a process for preparing bipolar membranes and precursors are described. In the process a precursor is formed by laminating at least two polymeric layers at least one of which is non-ionic. After the formation of the precursor, the non-ionic layer or layers are chemically treated to form a stable bipolar membrane having high permselectivity and low potential drop. The novel bipolar membrane contains an interfacial layer having anionic and cationic domains.

  • Patent number: 4673531
Abstract: An improved polycrystalline silicon resistor having limited lateral diffusion, integrated circuits containing such resistors, and a method of their preparation is disclosed. The polysilicon resistor is formed by first doping the polysilicon layer with a p or n type impurity and thereafter neutralizing the treated layer with impurities of the other type so as to form a device wherein the concentration gradient between the resistor region of the aforesaid layer and its environment is low. The low concentration gradient reduces lateral diffusion during manufacture, thereby permitting manufacture of integrated circuits of higher circuit density and resistors with smaller dimensions, lower temperature coefficients and higher reliability.

  • Patent number: 4671884
Abstract: A textile treatment composition comprises a water insoluble quaternary ammonium salt and a non-ionic surfactant containing at least one long-chain alkyl or fatty acid substituent and a hydrophilic group. The quaternary ammonium compound preferably has three large alkyl substituents of at least carbon atoms each and the surfactant may be selected from phosphine oxides, sulphoxides, or tertiary amine oxides, especially the latter. The compositions may be diluted with water and applied to textile materials especially wool, to give antistatic properties thereto. Compositions of the invention have lower soiling propensity than hitherto available compositions and they may therefore be applied to finished carpets, either in the piece or in situ applications.

  • Patent number: 4670605
Abstract: A catalyst and a process to convert commercial cyclohexanol feed to cyclohexanone at a relatively low temperature at stable conversion levels for long periods of operation. This process and catalyst allow operation in the presence of water and high boiling side products. The process features high conversion efficiency and low by-product formation, by use of an improved CuO-ZnO catalyst promoted with an alkali-metal compound such as sodium carbonate. The catalyst is stable in the presence of water and heavy end products in the feedstock (up to 13%). The presence of water rejuvenates the catalyst, increases the conversion and decreases the phenol content in the product mixture.

  • Patent number: 4648878
Abstract: A posterior chamber lens implant for use after extra-capsular surgery, i.e. surgery in which the rear membrane of the lens or posterior capsule is left intact. The lens implant comprises an optic having a front surface and a rear surface and the implant is secured within the posterior chamber of the eye. In one form of the invention, a pair of position-fixation means are adapted to support the optic in the posterior capsule of the eye with the planar rear face of the optic inclined with respect to the posterior capsule, with the superior rear edge of the optic in contact with the posterior capsule and the inferior rear edge spaced from the posterior capsule. While in a second form of the invention, the position-fixation means are such that they press the superior peripheral rear edge of the optic against the posterior capsule for deforming the latter in a manner to space the posterior capsule away from the mid-portion of the rear face of the optic.

  • Patent number: 4648879
Abstract: A posterior chamber intraocular lens having, according to one preferred form, at least one projection extending rearwardly from a location radially outwardly of a peripheral rear edge portion of the optic for spacing, from the mid-portion of the rear surface of the optic, the adjacent region of the posterior capsule containing the tension line. If desired, after implantation of the lens, the posterior capsule may be safely perforated with a laser beam transversely to a line of tension formed by the projection, causing the posterior capsule to tear and form an opening to eliminate any cloudiness of the posterior capsule from behind the optic. According to another preferred form, the lens has a pair of rearward projections, each located radially outwardly of opposite peripheral portions of the optica and cooperating to produce a similar tension and spacing effect.
