  • Patent number: 8273098
Abstract: A carpal tunnel release tool and methods for using the same are disclosed. Embodiments of the carpal tunnel release tool include a guide with an angled track and a knife that fits into and follows the angled track. In one embodiment, the knife is retracted into the guide as it is advanced along the track to cut the ligament. In an alternate embodiment the blade is extended outwardly from the surface of the guide as the blade is advanced along the track. Other embodiments include a projection at the terminal end of the track that maintains the position of the ligament over the guide, serves as a type of cutting block to ensure complete bisecting of the ligament, and can aid the surgeon in placement of the guide beneath the ligament. Further embodiments include an inserter that inhibits tissue entering the track as the guide is advanced beneath the ligament.

  • Patent number: 8273648
Abstract: Back-end-of-line (BEOL) circuit structures and methods are provided for blocking externally-originating or internally-originating electromagnetic edge interference. One such BEOL circuit structure includes a semiconductor substrate supporting one or more integrated circuits, and multiple BEOL layers disposed over the semiconductor substrate. The multiple BEOL layers extend to an edge of the circuit structure and include at least one vertically-extending conductive pattern disposed adjacent to the edge of the circuit structure. The vertically-extending conductive pattern is defined, at least partially, by a plurality of elements disposed in the multiple BEOL layers. The plurality of elements are uniformly arrayed at the edge of the circuit structure in a first direction or a second direction throughout at least a portion thereof.

  • Patent number: 8276141
Abstract: One or more transaction managers are automatically selected from a plurality of transaction managers for use in processing a transaction. The selection is based on types of resources used by the transaction and supported resource types of the transaction managers. The selection of the one or more transaction managers enables less than all of the transaction managers of an application server to be used in transaction commit processing, thereby improving performance.

  • Patent number: 8272612
Abstract: A clip for holding an object on a supporting member comprises a holding clamp and an attaching clamp. The holding clamp has a pair of clamping members with oppositely bowed gripping portions and inwardly arched handles. The oppositely bowed gripping portions form together, when engaged, jaws for holding an object such as a cigar. The jaws are connected together for pivotal movement to cooperate with each other for clamping action upon actuation of their handles. At the juncture point of the jaws with the handles, the clamping members are provided with aligned, apertured supports for receipt of an axial binding post or rivet that extends through the apertures and for holding the clamping members together and in axial alignment. A spring, normally biasing the clamping members towards a closed position is looped around the post with its ends locked against the handles.

  • Patent number: 8274790
Abstract: An apparatus is provided for cooling an electronics rack, which includes an electronic subsystem across which air passing through the rack flows. A cooling unit provides, via system coolant supply and return manifolds, system coolant in parallel to the electronic subsystem and an air-to-liquid heat exchanger disposed to cool, in normal-mode, air passing through the rack. A controller monitors coolant associated with the cooling unit and automatically transitions the cooling apparatus from normal-mode to failure-mode responsive to detecting a failure of the coolant. In transitioning to failure-mode, multiple isolation valves are employed in switching to a serial flow of system coolant from the electronic subsystem to the heat exchanger for rejecting, via the system coolant, heat from the electronic subsystem to air passing across the heat exchanger.

  • Patent number: 8267093
Abstract: An orthodontic assembly articulation device for causing a mandible to move relative to a maxilla includes a lower splint fitted with a lower reinforcement and an upper splint fitted with an upper reinforcement. The reinforcements are connected by a system of rods mounted with sliding capability. A ball joint couples each system of rods with a part of the reinforcements. The ball joint is interdependent with an extension oriented perpendicularly and screwed into a support element interdependent with a corresponding part of the reinforcements. The ball joint engages with the hemispherical cage of an end piece secured to each system of rods. The cage is in communication with an opening of the end piece to allow articulation of the system of rods of about 90° in a vertical plane and about 360° in a horizontal plane, while preventing any swinging of the end piece.

  • Patent number: 8269449
Abstract: A method and system for starting and operating an electrically driven load, e.g. a compressor or pump, by power supply from a mechanical driver, e.g. a turbine or combustion engine, whereby the load is mechanically connected to a first electrical machine, and the mechanical driver is mechanically connected to a second electrical machine. The first electrical machine is electrically interconnected to the second electrical machine at a standstill or when the first and or second machine have low speed. In an acceleration phase, the first electrical machine is accelerated by accelerating the second electrical machine with the mechanical driver. When the first electrical machine has reached a predefined rotational speed, the first machine is synchronized with a local electrical power network and connected it to that network.

  • Patent number: 8264270
Abstract: Reducing, suppressing or canceling series parasitic inductance and/or resistive effects that affect the frequency response of components, elements and/or circuits in an electronic circuit or system that exhibit capacitance is disclosed. Noise generated by series parasitic inductance and/or parasitic resistance of the components, the physical orientation of the components, and/or the layout of components, devices and/or conductive tracks (board traces) on printed circuit boards within an electronic circuit or system is reduced, suppressed or canceled. The reduction, suppression or cancellation is achieved by adding a voltage source in series with a part or component of the electronic circuit or system that exhibits capacitance, the current source being adapted to deliver a compensating voltage of roughly equal magnitude and roughly opposite phase to parasitic voltage associated with the part or component.
