Abstract: The emulation of a data processing I/O protocol employs a process which obviates the need to consider hardware specific functionality for which emulation is not an optimal solution. The particular protocol described in exemplary fashion herein is the OSA protocol as defined by Open System Adapter standards. The use of this emulation is also seen to leave in place all of the software tools otherwise employed.

Abstract: In a data processing system, objects (in the object oriented sense of the word) are instantiated through the use of transmitted data which is marshaled and demarshaled through the use of protocols that acquire meta data for the transmitted data through the use of an already existing cache of such meta data which has proper content meeting version requirements as specified by an implementation key associated with the object. This eliminates the need for call back requests that may or may not succeed because of the presence of a firewall in a yet-to-be-established connection. A tool is provided for structuring the data, first on disk and then later in a more readily available portion of an active memory.

Abstract: A metal grid contact and dielectric pattern on a layer requiring conductive contact in a photovoltaic device. The invention includes, in one aspect, forming a metal film; forming an etch resist over the metal film by, e.g., directly writing and in-situ curing the etch resist using, e.g., ink-jetting or screen-printing; etching the metal film leaving the resist pattern and a metal grid contact pattern under the etch resist intact; forming a dielectric layer over the etch resist; and removing the resist pattern and the dielectric over the etch resist, leaving a substantially co-planar metal grid contact and dielectric pattern. The metal grid contact pattern may form the front and/or back contact electrode of a solar cell; and the dielectric layer may be an optical reflection or antireflection layer. The layer requiring contact may be multifunctional providing its own passivation, such that passivation is substantially not required in the dielectric layer.

Abstract: A dual-chamber fluid pump is provided for a multi-fluid electronics cooling system and method. The pump has a first fluid path for pumping a first fluid coolant and a second fluid path for pumping a second fluid coolant, with the first fluid path including a first pumping chamber and the second fluid path including a second pumping chamber. The first and second pumping chambers are separated by at least one diaphragm, and an actuator is coupled to the diaphragm for transitioning the diaphragm between a first position and a second position. Transitioning of the diaphragm to the first position pumps first fluid coolant from the first pumping chamber while concurrently drawing second fluid coolant into the second pumping chamber, and transitioning of the diaphragm to the second position pumps second fluid coolant from the second pumping chamber while concurrently drawing first fluid coolant into the first pumping chamber.

Abstract: A humeral head augment device for use in a modular shoulder prosthesis. The humeral head augment device has an external bearing surface with at least one surface portion that includes a radius of curvature. The radius of curvature is configured to constrain translational movement of the implanted shoulder prosthesis when the humeral head augment device is positioned within the shoulder prosthesis. The humeral head augment device also includes a coupling mechanism designed to lock the humeral head augment device to either the stem or the humeral head, thereby ensuring proper operational positioning of the device within the shoulder prosthesis and allowing the implanted shoulder prosthesis to function in a patient suffering from rotator cuff arthropathy. A shoulder prosthesis using a humeral head augment device, a method for assembling a shoulder prosthesis and method for using a humeral head augment device in a shoulder prosthesis are also disclosed.
Abstract: Processing within a computing environment is facilitated by filtering requests of the computing environment. A processing unit that receives a request determines whether it is to perform the request. This determination is made by, for instance, comparing an identifier of the request with an identifier of the processing unit making the determination. If there is a mismatch, then the request is blocked. Other processing within the computing environment is also facilitated by selectively using buffer entries. The selection criteria is based, for instance, on identifier information.

Abstract: A method is provided which includes: facilitating intercepting a system call in user space by setting up signal handler code for executing operations related to the system call, and performing in the executing process, before execution of the system call, a SELF PTRACE request which sets system and self trace flags in the operating system kernel, wherein the self trace flag facilitates self-notifying the executing process whenever the executing process executes the system call; and intercepting the system call, including: verifying by the kernel that the system and self trace flags are set; saving and sending a signal to the signal handler conveying system call information to the user space; starting execution in user space of the signal handler; and at the end of signal handler execution, re-starting execution of the executing process, while providing system call return information to code of the executing process making the system call.

Abstract: Method and apparatus for processing a cell culture are provided. The method includes establishing a cell culture within a holding device having one or more wells, each well holding a cell culture, and including a well substrate with at least one electrode in contact with the cell culture; periodically applying at least one electrical pulse to the at least one electrode to prevent cells from attaching to and achieving confluence over the at least one electrode while allowing cells to attach to and achieve confluence over other portions of the well substrate; and discontinuing the periodically applying of the at least one electrical pulse to the at least one electrode after cells have achieved confluence over the other portions of the well substrate, and thereafter, monitoring the cell culture to monitor migration of cells over the electrode(s) from the other portions of the well substrate.
Abstract: A hypervisor-based facility is provided for communicating between a hardware management console (HMC) and a logical partition of a data processing system. The facility includes: packaging a request or response of a source endpoint as cargo in a generic transport primitive, the source endpoint being either an HMC or a logical partition of the data processing system; and forwarding the generic transport primitive from the source endpoint to a target endpoint via the hypervisor. The forwarding includes receiving the transport primitive at the hypervisor and forwarding the cargo of the transport primitive to the target endpoint. The cargo includes the request or response from the source endpoint, and the hypervisor forwards the cargo absent inspection or parsing of that cargo. The target endpoint is the other one of the logical partition or the hardware management console of the data processing system.
