Abstract: A process for preparing a 2-hydroxy-4-substituted pyridine compound using a microbiological method, a novel microorganism, and a novel compound are provided.
Abstract: An electronic device assembly is provided which includes a substrate, an interposer and an integrated circuit chip. The substrate is fabricated of a first material having a first thermal expansivity, and the interposer and integrated circuit chip are fabricated of a second material having a second thermal expansivity. The second thermal expansivity is different from the first thermal expansivity so that there is a coefficient of thermal expansion mismatch between the substrate and the interposer or chip. The interposer is coupled to the substrate via a first plurality of electrical contacts and an underfill adhesive at least partially surrounding the electrical contacts to bond the interposer to the substrate and thereby reduce strain on the first plurality of electrical contacts. The integrated circuit chip is coupled to the interposer via a second plurality of electrical contacts only, without use of an adhesive surrounding the second plurality of electrical contacts.

Abstract: A process for producing polymer particles having an antigen or an antibody introduced into the surface thereof, by carrying out miniemulsion polymerization using a monomer, a radical polymerization initiator, an emulsifier, and a hydrophobe in the presence of the antigen or antibody to thereby produce the polymer particles, is disclosed. According to the process, it is possible to provide a reagent for immunological analysis having an excellent detection sensitivity and capable of avoiding a nonspecific reaction which occurs in conventional methods.

Abstract: The present invention relates to genetically engineered micro-organisms for the combined production of 1,3-propanediol (PDO), 2,3-butanediol (BDO), and polyhydroxypropionic acid (PHP) by fermentation. In particular, the invention relates to a genetically engineered micro-organism suitable for combined production of PDO, BDO and PHP by fermentation, characterized in that: compared with corresponding wild-type starting micro-organism, the D-lactate dehydrogenase gene in the genetically engineered micro-organism is deleted or functionally inactivated, and the genetically engineered micro-organism comprises a heterogenous polynucleotide encoding the Coenzyme A-dependent Aldehyde dehydrogenase and a heterogenous polynucleotide encoding the Polyhydroxyalkanoate synthase. Methods for the construction of such micro-organisms, and methods for combined production of PDO, BDO and PHP by fermentation of a genetically engineered bacterium are also taught.

Abstract: An elastic underlayer for floorings, for instance, floorings for sports facilities such as synthetic-grass coverings, comprises a first laminar structure and a second laminar structure that enclose between them pouches filled with granular elastic material. The structures in question comprise a layer of non-woven fabric coupled with a polyolefin layer. The polyolefin layers enclose between them the pouches, which preferably have a parallelepiped shape with a square base, with sides having a length of 20-60 mm, typically 45 mm, and a height of between 20 and 40 mm, typically 30 mm. The pouches are filled with granular elastic material, such as granules of recycled tires having a size of between 0.5 and 7.0 mm.
Abstract: A balancing process between I/O processor groups of a non-uniform multiprocessor system enables spreading of I/O workload across multiple I/O processor groups on a group base as soon as the I/O processor group with maximum group utilization reaches a certain high limit together with other processor groups being utilized significantly lower. The additional balancing is decreased step by step again when a certain low utilization limit is reached or the workload becomes more evenly balanced between the I/O processor groups. Checking if increase or decrease of the balancing is required is done periodically, but with low frequency to not affect overall performance. The checking and balancing happens asynchronously in predefined intervals. This solves the problem that with an increasing number of I/O processors the handling of initiatives leads to increased cache traffic and contention due to shared data structures, which slows down the I/O workload handling significantly.

Abstract: A washable diaper having an outer article with an inner liner system detachably coupled to the outer article. The outer article has front and back ends, with opposing side edges connecting the ends, and inner and outer surfaces, with at least one fastening mechanism on the inner surface proximate to at least one of the ends. The inner liner system has first and second ends and includes at least one washable article, so that when assembled with the outer article, the first and second ends of the inner liner system align with the front and back ends of the outer article to be detachably coupled. The inner liner system may also include a liner member and/or at least one absorbent pad, configured to be placed within the washable article. A method of assembly of the washable diaper having an outer article and inner lining system is also disclosed.
Abstract: A superconducting article is provided which incorporates an early quench detection facility. The superconducting article includes a first superconductive segment and a second superconductive segment, along with a magnetic field sensor(s). The magnetic field sensor(s) is disposed to monitor relative change in strength of a net magnetic field generated by a first current passing through the first superconductive segment and a second current passing through the second superconductive segment. A relative change in strength of the net magnetic field indicates degradation of a critical quench current of the first superconductive segment or the second superconductive segment, caused for example, by formation of one or more hot-spots or quench regions in the first or second superconductive segment. The indication of degradation is thus obtained prior to complete superconductive segment quenching.
Abstract: A partition adjunct is provided for a logical partition running above a hypervisor of a data processing system. The partition adjunct, which is a separate dispatchable partition from an instantiating logical partition, provides one or more services to the logical partition. A service request received from the logical partition is processed by the partition adjunct utilizing virtual address space donated to the partition adjunct from the logical partition. The partition adjunct and the logical partition share a common virtual address to real address page table, and context switching the current state machine from the logical partition to the partition adjunct occurs without invalidating or modifying state data of selected memory management and address translation hardware of the data processing system. In a hardware multithreaded system, the partition adjunct is dispatched on a single thread, while another thread continues to run in the logical partition initiating the service request.

Abstract: Dedicated access is provided to a physical input/output (I/O) device which is non-configurable by an initiating logical partition. Access is established by: initiating, by the logical partition, creation of a partition adjunct; invoking a hypervisor of the data processing system to instantiate the partition adjunct with resources donated from the initiating logical partition, the donated resources including a donated virtual address space of the logical partition and the physical I/O device; creating, by the hypervisor, the partition adjunct and assigning the donated virtual address space and donated physical I/O device to the created partition adjunct; and interfacing, by the hypervisor, the logical partition and the created partition adjunct, the interfacing including providing the logical partition with a virtual I/O device which replaces the donated physical I/O device, and which is configurable by the logical partition.
